Description

PATEN TED FEB avwemfoz witnesses DQRA JONES, NEW YORK, N. Y.- CONDlMENT-HOLDER.
NO. 8 B
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 27, 1906.
Application filed August 80, 1906. Serial No. 276,354.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DORA JoNEs, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Condiment-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to holders for salt, powdered su ar, and other similar articles, particularlyt ose of a deliquescent character, and especially to the common type of tableholder which is provided with a perforated top or cap through which its contents are discharged.
One object of my improvements-is to provide a simple, sightly, and efficient means of keeping the moisture of the atmosphere from the contents of the holder, thereby reventing the caking of the contents and t e sto page of the perforations, which render tfie holders at times almost useless, and also for keeping out dust, insects, &c.
A furtherobject is to provide an adjustable cover which may be attached to the common table-holders already in use.
I attain these objects by certain novel features of construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter described and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan of a salt-holder embodying my improvements; Fig. 2, an enlarged section of the ca and cover of the holder; Fig. 3, a plan, and Fig. 4 a section, of a 'modified form of my improvements.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
The holder 1, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, is the common table-holder, made in an suitable shape and of any suitable materia To the cap 2, provided with the usual perforations 3 3, 1s hinged, as at 4, a cover 5, the lower surface of which is or may be concave or flat in conformity with the shape of the top of the cap. The cover is automatically closed and normally held closely down upon the top of the ca by a coiled spring 6, which is mounted on t e pivot of the hinge, or by any other suitable means. Attached to the lower surface of the cover, so as to be interposed between it and the top of the cap when the cover is closed, is a yielding or elastic pad 7, which is preferably made of cotton or Woolen felt or other similar absorbent material and is ormay be detachably secured to the cover by means of a shouldered recess 8 therein or by gum or cement, so that it may be readily removed and renewed as often as may be found desirable.
In the form shown in Figs. 3 and 4 the cover, with the elasticpad attached thereto, is
hinged, not directly to the ca but to a band 9, by whichit canbe adjustab ysecured to the cap of any of the ordinary table-holders now in common use. For the purpose of adapting it to somewhat varying sizes of caps the band is preferably made of resilient mater al and split at one side, as at 10, although equivalent means for securing an ad'ustable connection between the band and t e cap of the holder may be employed. In this case the central portion 5 of the cover is preferably made of a hollow dome shape to accommodate the central upward rojection, if any, on the top of the cap with which is it used. By making a few different sizes of covers and bands the attachment may be adapted for use with nearly all of the common table-holders.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 7 1. In a holder of the character described,
the combination of a dperforated cap, a cover hinged thereto and a apted to cover the perforations therein and a pad of absorbent material inter osed between it and the top of the cap when t e cover is closed.
2. In a holder of the character described, the combination of a perforated cap, a cover hinged thereto, a pad of absorbent material detachably secured within a shouldered recess in the lower side ofthe cover, and a s ring adapted to keep the cover normally c osed over the perforations in the cap. In Witness whereof I have hereunto afiixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
DORA JONES. Witnesses:

LEO SoHLoss.
