SPREADER FOR LIQUID BLACKING.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 420,785, dated February 4, 1890.

Be it known that I, AXET. R. GUsrAFsoN, of Marinette, in the county of Marinet-te, and in the State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Receptacles and Spreaders for Liquid Blacking, &c.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

My invention relates to a combined receptacle and spreader for liquid blacking or analogous material; and it consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts to be hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawings and subsequently claimed.

In the drawings, Figure 1 represents an elevation of my device, partly in section; Fig. 2, an elevation of a portion ofsaid device with its cover removed; Fig. 3, aplan View with the cover and spreader removed and parts broken away. Fig. 4 isa plan view of a ring that forms part-of my device.

Referring by letter to the drawings, A represents a receptacle made from glass, wood, earthenware, or other suitable material, and

' having its upper end provided with exterior screw-threads a, as illustrated in Fig. 1. Engaging the screw-threads a on the receptacle A is a cap B, provided with openings 17, and surrounding this cap is a ring B, made from spring-wire, provided with an inwardly-extended lug c and a vertical ear d, said lug being designed for engagement with a hole or indentation g in the cap, as shown in Fig. 1, to retain the ring in place.

Screw-threaded on the cap B is another cap D, provided with openings 6, designed to be brought into and out of register with the openings 6 in the former cap, and said cap D- is also provided with a vertical and inwardlyprojecting flange f, that serves as a holder for a sponge E. Screw-threaded on the cap D is a cover F, that incloses the sponge-holder and prevents any blacking or other liquid from escaping from the sponge when my device is carried about. The lower edge of the cap D is provided with two notches, that are respectively marked 0 0, these letters being abbreviations of the words open and closed.

marked 0 engages the ear d on the ring B, as shown in Fig. 2, the openings 19 e in the caps B D will be in register, and if the device be inverted the liquid contents therein will flow through said openings to be absorbed by the sponge or spreader E, as it is obvious that instead of said sponge a brush havinga perforated back, as shown in my patent, N 0. 376,879, issued January 24, 1888, or some other suitable absorbent and spreading material or device may be employed. hen the cap D is turned to bring the notch .0 into engagement with the car d on the riiig B, it thereby cuts off the openings 1) in the cap B, said ring being sprung down to disengage said ear from the notch O. The cover F being removed, the liquid in the sponge can be readily and evenly spread upon a surface, and the whole operation performed without soiling the fingers or clothing of the operator.

My device will be found very convenient for the use of travelers and others, and by means of the cover F the spreader D is kept free from dust and other accumulations that would tend to clog the same, and thereby impair its usefulness.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination, with a receptacle provided with a cap having openings therein, of another cap adj ustably arranged thereon and also provided with openings, a spreader carried by the latter cap, and a latch for retaining said latter cap in its adjusted position, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination of the receptacle A, provided with the cap B, detachably connected thereto and provided with openings 1), the cap D, adjustable on the one B and-provided with the openings 6 and flange f, the latter openings being arranged to come in and out of register with the openings 1), and the spreader E, retained in place by said flange, substantially as set forth.

3. The combination of the receptacle A, provided with the cap B, detachably connected thereto and provided with openings 1), the cap D, adjustable on the oneB and provided with the openings 6 and flange f, the latter openings being arranged to come in and out of register with the openings 1), the spreader E,

retained in place by said flange, and the detachable cover F for said spreader, substan tially as set forth.

4. The combination, with a receptacle pro vided with a cap having openings therein.0f another cap adjustably secured thereon and also provided with openings, a spreader retained upon the latter cap, and a ring held upon the former cap and provided with an ear for engagement with notches in the adjacent edge of the spreader-carrying cap, substantially as set forth.

5. The combination of the receptacle A, provided with the screw-threadsa, the cap 13, engaging said screw-threads and provided with the openings 1), the cap D, detaohably connected to the one B and provided with the openings 6 and flange f, the latter openings being arranged to come in and out of register with the openings b, the spreader E, and ring B,retained on said cap B and provided with the ear (Z for engagement with notches on said cap D, substantially as set forth.

6. The combination of the receptacle A, provided with the cap B, detachably connected thereto and provided with the openings 1), the

cap D, likewise connected to the one'B and provided with the openings 0 and flange f, the latter openings being arranged to come in and out of register with the openings 1), the spreader E, and the ring B, provided with the lug a for engagement with said cap B, and the ear d for engagement with notches on said cap D, substantially as set forth.

7. The combination of the receptacle A, caps B D, respectively provided with the openings 1) 6, adapted to come in and out of register with each other, the flange f on cap D, spreader E, held in place by the flange, ring B, retained on the cap B and provided with an ear for engagement with notches on said cap D, and the cover F for said spreader, substantially as set forth.
