Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK B. MILTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittston, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mucilage-Brush Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention is an improved brush holder, especially adapted for use in holding a mucilage brush on a mucilage bottle so as to prevent the hardening of the mucilage on the brush and in the neck of the bottle when the brush is not in use, the invention consisting in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of my invention is to provide a cap or cover for a mucilage or the like bottle with means for holding a mucilage brush in a suspended position, out of contact with the bottom of the bottle when the brush is not in use and also with means to permit the ready withdrawal of the brush when it is desired to use the same.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of a brush holder constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a plan of the same showing the slide in one position in full lines and in another position in dotted lines; Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the same on the plane indicated by the line a-a of Fig. 2; and Fig. 4: is a detail sectional view on a plane concentric with the slot of the slide and showing the headed stud of the cap and the spring catch of theslide engaged with said headed stud.
In accordance with my invention I provide a metallic cap or cover 1 to fit over the mouth of a mucilage or other like bottle, the said cap having a rim 2 depending therefrom and extending around the same, to engage around the outer side of the bottle mouth. This cap is provided with a slot 3 which extends partly across the same and which is widened at one end to form a segmental opening 4: in the cap. A slide 5, which is segmental in form is provided to close and uncover the opening 4. This slide is disposed on the cover or cap at one side of the same, is provided with a flange 6 which bears against one side and operates on the rim 2 of the cap and is also provided with a slot 7 which is concentric with the cap. Beyond one end of the slot the slide is provided with a spring catch 8. A headed stud 9 projects upwardly from the cap and operates in the slot 7 the head 10 of the said stud bearing on the upper side of the slide. The stud and slot, while securing the slide on the cap, also permit the slide to be moved on the cap so that it may be caused to either cover or uncover the opening 4 as may be desired. The flange 6 of the slide, by bearing against the rim of the cap, acts as a guide for the slide as will be understood. lVhen the slide is-moved to opened position so as to uncover the major portion of the opening 4 the spring catch 8, which also serves as a handle or finger piece, bears on the head 10 of the stud 9 and by frictional contact therewith secures the slide in opened position and prevents it from becoming casually closed, but at the same time enables the slide to be readily closed when it is desired to do so.
The brush 11, which is employed in connection with my holder, has its stem 12 provided with a flattened narrowed lower portion 13 which may be disposed in the slot 3 and is provided at the upper end of the said narrowed flattened portion with a cross piece 14: which bears on the cap at points on opposite sides of the slot and forms a stop which serves to suspend the brush from the cap so as to prevent the brush from hearing on the bottom of the bottle. Hence the brush does not become bent out of shape, and, moreover, by thus suspending the brush in the bottle, mucilage on the brush will drain therefrom and drop into the bottle and be prevented from hardening on the brush. Moreover, the brush holder supports the brush in the center of the neck of the bottle and out of contact therewith, so that the mucilage will not be smeared on the inner side of the bottle neck and caused to accumulate and harden there. Owing to the width of the slot 3 and the construction of the brush handle with the flattened narrowed portion engaged with the slot, when the brush is drawn out from the bottle and the brush holder, the sides of the slot wipe ofl superfluous mucilage from the brush and cause it to drop back into the bottle, thus avoiding the waste of the mucilage and also preventing the mucilage from dropping from the brush onto the work or upon any object. Ordinarily, the slide will be closed. When it is desired to use the My improved brush holder may be veryreadily and cheaply manufactured from any suitable material, may be instantly applied to or detached from a mucilage or other bottle and will be found very convenient and useful in holding the brush and preventing the gumming thereof and of the bottle neck with mucilage, and, moreover, prevents the loss and Waste of the mucilage and also prevents the brush from being injured.
-Having thus described my invention I claim:
1. A brush holder of the class described having a disk provided with means to engage a bottle mouth and also provided with a slot, for the purpose set forth, with an opening at one end of the slot and a closure for said opening, the said closure comprising a slide'mounted for movement on the disk across the said opening, the said slide being provided with a slot concentric With thedisk and the disk having a headed stud operating in said slot.
2. A brush holder of the class described having a disk provided with means to engage a bottle mouth and also provided with a slot, for the purpose -set forth, with an,
opening at one end of the slot and a closure for said opening, the said closure comprising a slide mounted for movement on the disk across the said opening, the said slide being provided with a slot concentric with the disk and the disk having a headed stud operating in said slot, the said slide being also provided with a spring catch to engage the said headed stud and hold the slide in opened position.
