Description
J. HILLIN.
improvement in Spittoons,
Patented July 2,1872.
gamma UNITED STATES JOHN HILLIN, OF POUGHKEEPSIE, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN SPITTOONS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 128,544, dated July 2,1872.
Specification describing a new and useful Improvement in Spittoons, invented by JOHN HILLIN, of Poughkeepsie, in the county of Dutchess and State of New York.
Figure l is a detail view of my improved spittoon, showing the parts detached and the lower or outer part in section through the line as m, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same arranged for use.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved spittoon, simple in construction and convenient in use, being made without any hole in the side, and with the conical or funnel-shaped part detachable, enabling it to be conveniently cleaned, and guarding against any of its contents spilling, should it be accidentally overturned and it consists in the spittoon constructed as hereinafter more fully described.
A represents the lower or outer part of the spittoon, which is made of the ordinary form, and of any desired size. The upper edge of the part A is made with a rabbet, a upon its inner side to receive the flange b of the inner or conical part B. The conical part B, upon its outer surface, and the outer part A, upon its inner surface, have corresponding inclined lugs b a formed upon them, which, when the Y part B is inserted. in the part A and turned partly around, interlock with each other, and securely connect said parts together. b are lugs or handles, formed upon the upper part of the conical part B, for convenience in connecting and disconnecting said parts. 0 is a ring-packing, of rubber, leather, or other suitable material, interposed between the flange I) of the part B and the bottom of the rabbet a of the part A, which, when the said parts are secured to each other, effectually prevent any of the contents of the spittoon from escapin g should the spittoon be accidentally overturned.
With this construction the parts can be readily detached for convenience in cleaning, and
no hole is required to be formed in the side of I the part A for this purpose.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent An improved spittoon formed by the combination, with each other, of the part A made with the rabbet a and the inclined lugs a and the part B made with the flange b the inclined lugs b and the lugs or handles b substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
JOHN HILLIN. Witnesses:
JAMES MULHOLLAND, PETER GREENow.
