LEOPOLEI) BERGER, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 27, 1915.
Application filed July 27, 1914. Serial No. 853,426.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LnoroLnD BERGER, a subject of the Emperor of Austria, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cuspidors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to cuspidors and has for its object to provide a device of such type, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, to prevent spilling of the contents thereof when tilted or upset and it further provides a device with means whereby it can be conveniently emptied and cleaned when occasion so requires.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a cuspidor which is simple in its construction and arrangement, ornamental, strong, durable, eflicient in its use and com-- paratively inexpensive to manufacture.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists of a novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as more specifically illustrated and described in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views: Figure 1 is a cross sectional view of a cuspidor in accordance with this invention, and Fig. 2, is a perspective view in accordance with this invention.
Referring to the drawing in detail, 1 dc notes a dome-shaped base, having formed integral therewith a hollow flaring body portion 2. Associating with the body portion 2, is a mouth piece 3, which is convolute in vertical section at any point throughout. The mouth piece 3 forms an entrance opening 4, and further provides an upper compartment 5 which communicates at 7 with the compartment 8, provided by the body portion 2. The inner turned portion 9 of the mouth piece 3 is formed with a series of openings 10 which communicate with the compartment 5. The mouth piece 3 is hinged as at 11 to the body portion 2 and is detachably connected to the body portion. A gasket 13 is interposed between the top edge of the body portion 2 and the mouth piece 3. The mouth piece 3 is so connected to the body portion 2 to enable the mouth piece to be swung backward so that the body portion 2 can be conveniently emptied and cleaned. The convolute por tion of'the mouth piece 3 prevents the spill,- ing of the contents of the cuspidor when the cuspidor is tilted or upset.
What I claim is A cuspidor comprising base member, a dome-shaped hollow body rising therefrom, a mouth piece section hingedly secured to the body and conforming to the outline whereby to form a continuation thereof, and providing an entrance opening to said body, the inner periphery of said mouth piece being bent downwardly below the horizontal plane of the hinged connection of the mouth piece, thence outwardly and upwardly above said plane to form an annular receiving portion, said latter portion being adapted to receive the liquid contents of said body when the latter is tilted, and said portion having a plurality of openings to permit said contents to flow back to the body.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
