CUSPIDOR.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 256,251, dated April 11, 1882,

Application filed January 28, 1882.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE G. STERLING, of New York, county and State of New York,

- have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ouspidors, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to cuspidors, and

i has for its objects to increase their stability,

and at the same time to afford a better protection to the floor or carpet thereon, and to facilitate the cleaning of the same.

It consists in providing cuspidors with.

' slots, in which the pins or projections fit.

The body or cuspidor proper may be made of any suitable material, and as light as is conducive to strength but itis preferableto make the base of metal, as it is necessary that the same should be heavy. Itis desirable also that the connecting-flange ot' the body he of metal, which may be easily fastened to the body by any of the ordinary means when the body is of china, papier macho, &c.

My invention is well adapted for use on trains, boats, &c., it being very stable on account of the large heavy flat base, which makes it almost impossible to upset it.

To describe my invention more particularly, I will now refer to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved safety-cuspidor. Fig. 2 is a central section of the same, and Fig. 3 shows, in section, a modification of the connecting device for the body and base-plate.

A represents the body of the cuspidor, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, made of spun meta]. It is provided with the flange b, in which are formed at opposite sides thereof the angular or bayonet slots of c. The base-plate d is slightly concave on its upper surface, and is provided with the flange 6, having on the opposite sides of its exterior the two pins,ff, adapted to fit into the angular or bayonet slots 0 0 in the flange b of the body. The two parts are connected together by placing the slots 0 0 over the pins ff and partlyturning the body so as to bring the pins into the horizontal part of the slots; I

The body and base may be of any desired shape and made of anysu'itable material, proyided, however, that the plate must be heavy.

In Fig. 3 is represented another method for securing the body and base together. In this case the body g is represented as made of one piece of materialmoldedintothedesired shape, with the neck It formed thereon havingacoaise screw-thread, which fits into a corresponding thread formed in the socket i, forming a part of the base-platej.

What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is--- In a cuspidor, the body provided with a flange, and a base-plate, also provided with a flange adapted to fit into orsnrround the flange of the body, the one flange having connecting pins or projections and theotherangulars'lots, in combination, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
