To all whom t may concern troit, in the county of Wayne and State of Improvements in Combined Holders and Shape-Retainers for Hats,'of which the following is a-specication.
This invention relates to improvements in receptacles, and has relation more particularly toea combined holder and shaperetainer for felt hats.
Theprimary object of this invention is th provision of a device of the above stated character wherein@ provisions are made for supporting a felt hat and retaining the shape thereof, by providing a hat receiving member having a receptacle for receiving the crown of a felt hat, preferably a derby, and having movablv connected therewith a hat supporting member adapted to extend into the Yhat receiving member to hold the crown of the hat in pressing contact with the walls of the receiving member for retaining the shape of the same.
A further object of the invention is the provision of Va device of this character, wherein means are provided for retaining the hat supporting member within the hat receiving member. i
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character wherein means are provided for permanently closing-the brim engaging walls of the respective hat` receiving member and the hat. lholding `member in engagement vwith the brim of the hat.
The invention consists in the novel features, details of construction and combina.
tion of parts which vwill lhereinafter be more fully set forth, illustrated in the accompanying drawing andpointed out inthe appended claims. l
In the accompanying drawing Flgure 1 is a detail vperspective view showing the device closed, with a hat inserted therein. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view illustrating the device partly open; and Fig. 4 is a view .illustrating the device closed, with the hat applied thereto, and in a suspended position.
Referring more particularly to thedrawing, 5 denotes the hat supporting member and 6 the hat receiving member. The said members 5 and may be made of card-board, water-proof paper` and the like material,

which will lessen the cost of manufacture of the same.
vThe hat supportingjmember 6 comprises a hollow crown portion 7 and an angularly arranged brnn engaging and pressing portion 8, the said hollow crown portion 7 accommodates the crown portion 9 of an ordinary` felt hat, preferably a derby, and over which the hat is adapted to fit, reposing its rimportion 10, upon and incontact with the end surface 11 of the brim engaging and pressling portion 8, by this construction the hat is i properly supported on the said hat supportmg member.I 6.
Pivotally connected with one end of the brim engaging portions 8 of the hat supporting member.6, through the medium of a hinge 12, is the hat'receiving member 5, formed with a receptacle 13 adapted to receive the crown portion 7 of the hat supporting member 5, when the device is in ac` tive use, or in yother words, after the hat is placed over the crown accommodating walls of the crown portion 7 of the hat support- 'zov ing device, the latter is swung in a direction toward and within the receptacle member 13 of the hat receiving member 6, forcing the crown portion of the hat in contact with the crown receiving walls of the receptacle, causing the shape' of the crown of the hat to be properly retained at -all times. After this operation, the hat supporting member is fastened in a closed position to the hat receiving member, by means of a fastener including a resilient tongue 14 adapted to interlock with a catch 15, the fastener 13 being arranged on the respective hat'supporting member and hat receiving member, at a point diametrically opposite the point of their pivotal connection with one another. The `brim engaging and pressing walls of the hat supporting member 5, is further proor the like, indicated by the reference char-' acter 19. It is to be understood by this invention being constructed of card-board, water-proof paper and the like, permits of the same being manufactured at a minimized cost, therefore these devices may be manufactured for hats of dijferent sizes and shapes, and if so desired'may be given away withy each purlchase of a hat, therefore the particular type of crown walls and brim walls illustrated is merely? for the purpose of properly` illus-` trating the invention, and therefore such changes in the shape and sizeof the ,device/p .to conform `with the dii'erent styles and is merely illustrativev` and that such changes vmay be made when desired as are within the scope of the claimslappended hereto. n
What is claimed as Anew is :k f 1. As a new article of manufacture, a combined holder and shape retainer for hats comprising a hat receiving member of receptacle form, and a hat supporting member movably connected with the hat receiving member and extending thereinto andr serving to hold the hat in the walls of the receiving member.y
2. As a new article of manufacture, ay
, members, lother when said members are 1n closed posi pressing contact with 'y combined holder and shape retainer for hats comprising a hatreceivmgmember of receptacle form, and a hat supporting member hingedly `connected with the hat receivmg lmember and extending thereinto and serving to hold the hat in pressing contacty with the walls of the receiving member, and
means for 'locking the hat receiving mem-k ber upon the hat supportingmemben f '3. As a new article' of manufacture, a
combined holderand shape retainer for hats comprlsing a hat receiving member having an apertured brim engaging portion,a hat 'i supporting member having a brim engaging formed with an aper-v ture, the hat receiving member beingv and pressing portion,
hingedly connected with the hat supporting member at a* point kdiametrically *opposite4 their apertured brim engaging portions and the supporting member adapted'to extend within the hat receiving member and serving to hold the hat in pressing contact with the walls of the receiving member, the apc-rtures of the brim engaging portions of the respective hat receiving and supporting adapted Ytoregister with one antion, permitting the devices to be suspended from a support and the like.
