Description
.PATENTBD MAR..19, 1907. f1.1). OLLARD.
HARRY D. 'OLLARD, OF TACOMA, WASHINGTON.
ATTACHMENT FOR HATS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 19, 1907.
Application led November 17, 1906. Serial No. 343.903.
To all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY D. OLLARD, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Tacoma, in the county of Pierce and State of Washington, have invented new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Hats, of which the following is a specification. v
This invention relates to attachments for hats; and one of the principal objects of the invention is to provide a light inexpensive box or receptacle for small articles which can be readily attached to the top inner wall of a hat and to rovide said box or receptacle with means or convenient attachment of a memorandum-card and a pencil.
Another object of my invention is to provide a box or receptacle with a curved comparatively-stiff bottom which will conform to the inner wall of the crown of a hat, and to provide a self-closing lid for said box, and to provide means for detachably connecting a memorandum-card and a pencil at one end of the box.
These and other objects may be attained bymeans ofthe construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of the crown'portion of a hat having my attachment secured in place therein. Fig. 2 is a plan view of a memorandum-card adapted to be connected to the box. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the box with the memorandum-card removed.
Referring to the drawing for a more particular descriptiomthe numeralfl designates the crown portion of a hat to which my attachment is adapted to be secured. A box 2, provided with a curved bottom 3, which conforms to the contour of the inner wall of the crown portion ofa hat, is secured within the hat by means of an adhesive substance applied to the outer surface of the bottom 3 and applied to fabric tabs 4, secured to the ends of the box and attached at their outer ends to the inner wall of the hat-crown by a suitable adhesive material. .The box 2 has closed sides and ends, and the top of the box 5 is closed by a lid 6, hinged at one side of the box'by means of sprin -hinges 7, which are adapted to close the li automatically, said lid being provided'with a suitable catch or button 8 to hold the lid closed and to provide a convenient finger-hold for opening the lid.
Secured at opposite ends of the box areX strips 9 of a suitable flexible material to provide pockets between the to 5 of the box and said strips for the ends of t e memorandumcard 10, said ends being reduced in size, as at 11, in order that said memorandum-card may be readily inserted in the pocket, and the sides of said card projecting beyond the sides of the box to provide means for conveniently removing and replacing the card. This card may be made of any suitable material which will permit the erasure of pencil-marks. On the card certain lines of memoranda are indicated and this memoranda may be changed to suit the wearer of the hat. U on one of the strips 9 means are provided fdr holding the pencil, and in Figs. 1 and 3 I have illustrated spring-hooks 12, riveted or otherwise secured to the strip 9 and projecting outward therefrom in a position to engage a pencil 13.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that an attachment made in accordance with my invention may be quickly applied to a hat.
. The box or receptacle may be used for containing small articles and the memorandumcard may be quickly attached and detached therefrom to give access to the box, and space is provided for advertising purposes.
My attachment may be manufactured at slight cost, is light in weight, adds stiifness to the crown of the hat, and is a convenient attachment for the purposes set forth.
Having thus descrlbed the invention, what I claim is- 1. An attachment for hats comprising a box or receptacle having a curve bottom designed to conformto the curvature of the inner wall of the crown portion of the hat, a lid secured to said box by spring-hinges, pockets at each end of the box, and a memorandum-card removably connected to said pockets, substantially as described.
2. An attachment for hats comprising a box, fabric'tabs secured to the ends of the box and connected to the inner wall of the hatcrown, a spring-lid for the box, and means for detachably connecting a memorandumcard to said box.
3. In an attachment of the character described, a box, a sprng-c1osed1d therefor, l In testmonywhereof l ax lnysigl'lature means or securlng the box Wlthln thecrown ill-presence of two Witnesses. of the hat strips extendn@ across the ends of v n the box tb provide pockepsffol a memoran- HARR D Ouh/Ulu dum-card, said memorandum-card having re- Vtne/sses duced ends, and means for securing a pencil` n J. S. SIMPSON, to one of the strips, substantially as described.
