This invention relates to improvements in ladies handbags, Aand relates more particularly to combination handbags of the envelope type having flap closure means.

It is well known that most women carry cigarettes in their handbags, and these cigarettes, for the most part, are left in the original paper container, which, when 'it is turned up-sidedown, deposits fine particles of tobacco which tend to become mixed with other and more delicate items normally carried in a ladys handbag, thereby causing considerable annoyance.v As a consequence thereof, many women have resorted to other cigarette cases, the closures of which, however, do not remain tight over any considerable period of time.

One of the principal objects of the present invention is the provision of a novel ladies handbag having an exteriorly disposed cigarette container which is normally carried on the front face or wall of the body of the bag, and which may be readily removed if it is desired to place same upon a table or the like.

To this end, the invention comprises a ladies handbag of more or less conventional construction, and which is provided with a rectangular cut-away portion on its front face extending downwardly from the upper edge thereof, the edges of which cut-away portion are desirably reinforced by metallic strips or other suitable material for the sake of durability. A novel cigarette container of rectangular shape is provided with grooves along its two vertical edges and its lower edge, which grooves receive the marginal edges of the aforesaid rectangular cut-away portion.

It is desirable to form this cut-away portion of such size as to relatively snugly t the grooved portions of the cigarette container in order to prevent casual removal thereof.

The cigarette container is desirably provided with a hinged closure which is normally maintained in a closed position by means of springs. A mirror is preferably carried on the exterior surface of the closure, and the interior surface thereof is provided with a novel humidor arrangement in order to preserve the cigarettes contained therein in a moist condition.

A further object of the invention is in the provision of an improved handbag having means for detachably supporting a container for cigarettes and the like, which is durable and inexpensive in construction and which will remove all possibility of particles of tobacco from getting within the interior of the bag.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter specifically pointed out or will become apparent as the specification proceeds.

The preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in Fig. 1, and includes a handbag I0 having a rear wall Il and a front wall I2 integrally joined thereto along its lower edge. The vertical end portions of the main body of the bag are joined together by means of bellows-like portions i3. The closure flap I4 is integrally formed with the rear wall of the bag and is provided with a snap fastener means l5. If desired, the front wall may be provided with reinforcing metal strips IS along its vertical end portions which further add to its attractiveness.

The front wall of the bag is formed with a rectangular cut-away portion I8 extending downwardly from the upper edge i9 thereof. Inasmuch as the edges of this cut-'away portion support the cigarette container which is designated as 2D, said edges are desirably provided with reinforcing strips 2| of metal or other suitable material.

Whereas the construction of the cigarette container may vary widely without departing from the scope of the invention, it is desirable to provide a wood or metal frame 22 which is formed with longitudinal grooves 23 along its two vertical and lower horizontal edges. The rear face of the frame is provided with a recess 24 extending therearound, which recess receives the edges of the rear wall 23 of the container.

The cover or closure member is hingedly secured to the frame at 26 and comprises a rectangular frame 21 of slightly smaller dimensions than the frame 22. A mirror 28 is seated in a recess 29 in the frame. Immediately behind the mirror, means are provided for retaining the cigarettes in a moist condition. These means comprise a metal plate 30 which is provided with a plurality bf which are received in the grooves 52 formed in of apertures 3|, said plate being held in place by means of a rectangular retaining plate 32. Between the apertured plate 30 and the mirror 28, a sheet of absorbent material 33 such as blotting paper or the like is positioned. A few drops of water placed upon this blotting paper will preserve the moisture in the cigarettes for a considerable period of time.

In Fig. 3 a modication in the construction is shown, wherein the front wall of the handbag indicated as I2' is provided with a substantially H-shaped member 35 extending around the marginal edges of the cut-away portion I8. In this instance, the container 26 is formed with an outwardly extending flanged portion 36 extending along the side and bottom edges of the frame.

In Fig. 5 there is illustrated a modied embodiment of the cigarette container. In this instance the front wall 40 of the pocketbook is provided with a rectangular recess indicated at 4 I, extend# ing downwardly from the upper edge thereof, as in the preferred embodiment.

The cigarette container comprises a substantially U shaped frame 42, having longitudinal grooves indicated at 4 I along its outer surface to receive the marginal edges of the cut-away portion. The container is further provided with a back 43 of any suitable material, and a cover 44 which is preferably a glass or metal mirror. This mirror is secured along its upper edge to an elongated block 45 which is pivotally mounted at the upper ends of the frame by means of pins 46. A plurality of cigarettes 41 are positioned in the container.

This construction is rather less expensive than the container shown in the preferred embodiment although it does lack the humidor feature shown therein.

In Fig. 6 the front wall 50 of the pocketbook is provided with a cut-away portion 5l, the edges the container 53. The container has a depth slightly in excess of the length of the cigarettes 56. The container is further provided with a xed cover 54 which may have a mirror surface or otherwise and which extends from the bottorn edge of the container to a point substantially three fourths its height.

It will be appreciated that in the event that the pocketbook is constructed with a central wall this wall may be provided with the rectangular recess, shown in the preferred embodiment, and the cigarette container mounted therein.

It is to be understood that the present invention is not limited to a combination handbag having a container merely for cigarettes, since the removable container may be employed as a vanity or any other desired purpose. It is also obvious that if it is desired to permanently secure the container in the recess it may be axed by means of any suitable adhesive or otherwise.

The hereinbefore described construction admits considerable modification without departing from the invention. Therefore it is the wish not to be limited to the precise arrangements shown and describedl which are by way of illustration merely.

What I claim is:

1. A ladies handbag comprising front and rear walls of nexible material integrally joined along their lower edges to form a main compartment, a closure flap integrally formed with the rear wall thereof and fastener means for maintaining said closure flap in a closed condition, said front wall having a substantially rectangular cut-away portion extending downwardly from its upper edge, reinforcing strips carried around the marginal edges of said cut-away portion, and a substantially rectangular container for cigarettes or the like having a grooved portion extending along its side and lower edges removably positioned within said cut-away portion, the edges of said cut-away portion being positioned within said grooves.

2. A handbag comprising front and rear walls of iiexible material joined along their lower edges and side edges to form a main compartment, a closure ap carried by the rear wall thereof and means for maintaining said closure flap in a closed condition, said front wall having a substantially rectangular cut-away portion extending downwardly from its upper edge, and a substantially rectangular container for cigarettes or the like having a longitudinal groove extending along its side and lower edges, the container being positioned within said cut-away portion, the marginal edges of said cut-away portion being positioned Within said grooves.
