NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.

COMBINED HANJD lBAG AND VANITY BOX.

Application filed March 24, 1922. Serial No. 546,846.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MAX FREUND, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in a Combined Hand Bag and Vanity Box, of which the following is a specification. v

, The object of this invention is to provide a hand bag of the kind carried by ladies, which will be provided with means for conveniently carrying various toilet articles without in any manner increasing the dimensions of the bag. This object is accomplished by utilizing portions of the bag which were heretofore more or less waste spacejand disposing means therein for conveniently carrying the toilet articles in a neat and orderly manner.

A further object of this invention is to provide a hand bag and vanity box combined in a single article, whereby toilet articles will be kept separate from mono or other articles usually carried in a hand ag,

" thus keeping those toilet articles free from contact vith the miscellaneous articles carried in the bag and retaining them in their properpositions in a compact and desirable manner.

With these objects, and other objects which may hereinafter appear in view, I have devised the particular arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth and more particularly pointed out in the claims appended hereto.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, in which- 7 Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved combined hand bag and vanity box in its open position;

Figure 2 is a sectional view of the lower end of the article, showing the storage space and the comb pocket;

Figure 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Figure 1, looking in the direction of the arrows;

Figure 4 is a vertical sectional view of the ba and igure 5 is a fragmentary View of a portion of the bag at its upper edge, showing the manner in which the closure flap is used. Throughout the various views of the drawings, similar reference characters designate similar parts.

In the preferred embodiment of my invention, as disclosed in the accompanying draw- 1ng, 1 indicates the central portion or contaming compartment of the bag. This is generally utilized for the purpose of containing money or the like This compartment 1 is bounded by the side walls 3 and t and the bottom 2. The bottom 2 of the compartment is in the nature of a false bottom of the bag, whereby a storage chamber 5 is provide between the false bottom 2 and the bottom proper 6 of the bag.

The two sides 3 and 4: of the compartment 1 are arranged to come together at their upper edges to close the compartment in the customary manner, and said upper edges are provided with the usual reinforcing pieces7 which are of metal and are provided with the interengaging clasp members 8 and 9 which, when engaged, hold the compartment 1 closed.

The side 4 of the compartment 1 continues downward below the bottom 2 of the compartment and forms a back'10 for the storage compartment 5. The storage space 5 is thus bounded by the wall or side 10 and end walls 11, leaving an elongated side opening 12 over which the side flap 13 is held when the bag is in its closed position, as will be hereinafter set forth.

The flap 13, which forms one of the outer faces of the bag, is freely hinged or pivoted at M so that when desired it can be swung away from the side 3 of the compartment 1 as disclosed in Figure l where it will be seen that the inner side of the flap 13 is accessible. The inner face of theflap 13 is provided with a plurality of pockets 15, 16 which open upwardly when the flap is in its closed position. These pockets are intended to contain various toilet articles, the pocket 16 holding a powder putt 17 and the pockets 15 holding articles of greater bulk such as the powder box 18, lip stick 19 and eyebrow pencil 20. lin place of the articles mentioned other articles may, of course be carried.

It will be seen that the pockets 15' are so positioned on the inner face of the flap 13 that when the flap 13 is in its closed position, or in other words is held flat up against the side 3 of the bag, these pockets lie in re istration with the storage chamber 5 wl ereby the articles of, substantial bulk held in those pockets can project within the chamber 5, as disclosed in Figure 4.

Within the storage chamber 5 I provide a pocket 21 intended to receive and hold a comb or similar article 22. The pocket 21 is secured within the storage chamber by stitching extending along its lower edge so that said pocket will normally lie substantially flat against the wall 10 of the compartment 5. The pocket 21 by reason of" its manner'of securement within the storage space 5 may be swun forward as indicated in dotted lines in iigure 2 so that the mouth of the pocket extends directly out towards the n side 12 of the storage chamber to enle'the comb 22 to be readily removed from the pocketand returned thereto when desired.

On the outer face of the side 3 of the bag is secured a mirror 23. When the bag is in its closed position as disclosed in the sec; tional view in Figure 4, all of the toilet articles are thus held on the two opposing faces 3 and 13. To hold the flap 13 fiat against the face of the side 3, I provide the inner face of the flap 13 with the snapfastener members 24, which engage the cooperating members 25 on the outer face of the side wall 3 of the bag. An additional means for holding the fia 13 against the side 3 of the bag consists o the closure flap 26 which has one of its ends secured to a flap 27 which flap'is secured to the side 4 of the bag by the expansion strips 28. The closure flap 26 is provided on its outer end with a snap fastener member which engages with a co-operating member 30 on the outer face of the flap 13 near the upper edge thereof.

The inner face of the flap or side member '27, which by reason of its connection to the side 4 by the expansion strips 28 is movable within the limitations of the strips 28 to and from the side 4, is rovided with an expansible pocket 31. his pocket may be utilized to contain a 'small change purse 32 v or other article.

At 33 is shown the carrying strap which is shown secured in the conventional manner to the central reinforces 7.

It will be seen from the foregoing that I have provided a hand bag of no greater dimension than those of customa construction; in which I have utilized siibstantially all available space; in which a plurality of toilet articles are contained or held together in a single compartment in a neat and orderl manner.

It will e understood that the arrangement of the pockets 15 and 16 on the inner side of the flap 13 may be varied to suit different requirements; that the shape and general construction of the entire .article may be varied in many ways, and many other changes in the construction of the article may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.

What I claim is 1. An article of the class described comprising a baghaving a central compartment portion and two side flaps, one of said flaps being flexibly connected to the central portion, the other flap being hinged to the central portion, said central portion having astorage chamber located below the central compartment portion and open at one side thereof, apocket in said chamber and aplurality of pockets on one face of the bin ed flap some of which are adapted to pro ect into said storage chamber.

'2. An article of the class described comprising a bag having a central compartment and means for closin the'same, said compartment having its ottom terminating a distance above the bottom of the bag whereby a storage chamber is formed between the bottom of the compartment and the bottom of the bag, an opening in one of the side walls forming an entrance to said storage chamber, a flap hinged to said side wall, means for detachably holding said flap over the opening to said storage chamber, an elongated pocket within the storage chamber, and a plurality of pockets on the inner face of the flap with some of said pockets on the flap located in substantial registration with the opening to the storage chamber.

Signed at the city, count and State of New York, this 27th da of ebrua 1922.
