HANDBAG 2 Sheets-Sheet 1` Filed Jan. 21, 1936 mi) m l 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 ATTORNEY.
Sept. 8, 1936. c. BRINKERHOFF HANDBAG Filed Jan. 21, 193e Patented Sept. 8,v 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE HANDBAG Clarence Brinkerhoi'l', Denver, Colo. Application January 21, 1936, Serial No. 60,043
This invention relates to a ladys handbag or case. Usually a woman carries her money ink her handbag where it becomes mingled with cosmetics, handkerchiefs, etc. It is rather annoying for a woman to make change before a cashier, stretcar conductor, etc., since it usually requires removal of the major portion of the contents of the bag in order to reach a piece of small change.
'I'he principal object of this invention is to provide a construction for handbags or handcases in which coins lwill be instantly and easily available regardless of the remainingl contents of In the following detailed description of the invention reference is had to the accompanying drawings which forma part thereof. Like numerals refer to like parts in all views of the drawings and throughout the description.
In the drawings:-
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a womans handbag or carrying case with the invention applied thereto. In this view, the coin carrier is illustrated partially open and the bag is illustrated closed.
Fig. 2 is a similar view illustrating the coin carrier closed and the bag open.
Fig. 3 isla longitudinal section through the coin carrying portion illustrating it in the open position.
Fig. 4 is a cross section therethrough, taken on the line 4 4, Fig. 2.
'I'he invention comprises a case I0 which may have any suitable conguration or design and any desired surface ornamentation. 'I'he case I0 is provided with a hinged side I I which may be held closed by any suitable catch or fastener.
The side II is preferably provided with folding pockets I3. 'I'he case I0 is preferably provided with end pockets I4 and with any suitable carrying handle or strap I5.
'I'he coin carrying portion of this device consists of a series of coin compartments I8, provided with a false bottom I'I, and positioned over 3 Claims. (Cl. 150-35) the entire top of the bag I0. The coin compartments I6 are provided with a flexible cover I8. 'I'he cover I8, slides in side channel members I9 which extend along both sides of the top of the coin compartments I6, thence curve downwardly around one end thereof as indicated at 20, to return beneath the bottom `I l and above a false top 2I over the bag.
The exible cover I 8 may be constructed in any desired manner. As illustrated, it consists of a series of cross slats 22 secured together by a flexible covering of leather; .fabric or similar material. The extremities of the slats project into the guide channels I9 and slide therein. This cover however, could be formed of a single piece of flexible metal or the like.
The extremity of the flexible top I8 is pro- Y compartments for the smaller coins at the ex- 25 tremity which is first opened upon movement of the cover I8. i
In use the .device may be conveniently held under the left arm and grasped with the left hand. The right hand then can be used to unfasten the snap 24 and slide the top I 8 open the desired amount. This exposes the coins or tokens in the compartment I6 so that they are easily visible and easily reached. Paper money can be kept in toe pockets I3, if desired. Transfers, receipts, etc. may be conveniently kept in the pockets i6 where they can be easily reached without opening the side II.
While the invention has been illustrated with the flexible lid I8 longitudinally movable, it is conceivable that this might, on bags of certain design, be laterally movable.
While a specific form of the improvement has top; a hinged side positioned below said false top opposite said closed side wall; a false bottom spaced above said false top; a longitudinally extending, iiexible cover for closing the entire length of said open top; and means for guiding said cover downwardly inside one end wall to a position between said false top and said false bottom when it is moved to the open position.
2. A case of the character described comprising: closed end walls; one closed side wail; a bottom extending between said closed end walls: an open top; a false top positioned below said open top; a hinged side positioned below said false top opposite said closed side wall; folding pockets mounted between said hinged side and said closed side wall; a false bottom spaced above said false top; a longitudinally extending, flexible cover tor closing the entire length of said open top: and means for guiding said cover downwardly inside one end wall to a position between said false top and said false bottom when it is moved to the open position, said'folding pockets acting to move the contents outward from beneath said false top when said hinged side is opened.
3.V A case of the character described comprising: closed end walls; one closed side wall; a bottom extending between said closed end walls; an open top: a false top top: a hinged side positioned below said false top opposite said closed side wall; a false bottom spaced above said false top; a longitudinally extending. flexible cover for closing the entire length ot said open top; means for guiding said cover downwardly inside one end wall to a position between said false top and said false bottom when it is moved to the open position; titions extending laterally between the side walls above said false bottom so as to form a longitudinally extending series of compartments across said open top so that said compartments will be successively opened and closed as said cover is moved to or from its position between said false bottom and said false top.
