HANDBAG Filed Sept. 30, 19 37 y INVENTOR 567/4? A/ndema/yfl.
ATTORNEY Patented Sept. 20, 1938 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE HANDBAG Application September 30, 1937, Serial No. 166,459
2 Claims.
The present invention relates to handbags, and is more particularly directed toward handbags provided with externally accessible compartments, into which the user may easily obtain ac- 5 cess without making it necessary to open the principal compartment of the handbag.
It is a common occurrence for small articles to be, placed in handbags, and on account of other articles in the handbag be diflicult to find 10 or locate in a hurry. The present invention contemplates a handbag wherein it is not necessary to place the more commonly used articles in the body of the bag, hence these articles do not commingle with the contents of the bag and it is 15 possible to obtain quick access to them.
According to the present invention one of the walls of the bag is provided with an opening behind which is placed a box-like device to form one or more compartments, and flaps are carried by 2 the body of the bag and arranged to cover the compartments, so that when the flaps are in place the complete bag presents a trim neat appearance, and yet the contents of the compartment or compartments employed are quickly available by 25 opening the proper flap.
The accompanying drawing shows, for purposes of illustrating the present invention, two of the many embodiments in which the invention may take form, it being understood that the :0 drawing is illustrative of the invention rather than limiting the same.
In the drawing- Figure 1 is a View illustrating the handbag in use;
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the handbag showing two of the compartments open and one closed;
Figures 3 and 4 are cross sectional views on the lines 33 and 44, respectively of Figure Figure 5 is a perspective view of a modified form of construction.
In the drawing a conventional style of handbag is illustrated. It has a front side Wall H), a
5 rear side wall H and end walls l2 and 3. These are secured in a suitable manner to a substantially rigid bottom wall l4 covered, if desired, with some suitable covering material |5.
The side wall It is provided with an elon- 50 gated aperture adjacent the bottom edge of the bag, the edge of this aperture being indicated at I6. A box 20 is secured in place in the opening in the side wall of the bag. This box has a bottom 2|, end walls 22, side walls 23 and 24, and
55 transverse walls, indicated at 25 and 26. This box may be made of wood and is covered with suitable fabric covering, indicated at 21. The center compartment may, if desired, be provided with a filler 28. The outer edges of the box walls 2|, 22, 23 and 24 and the outer edges of 5 the transverse walls or partitions, are substantially flush with the wall or face I D of the bag.
Three fiaps 29, 30 and 3| are secured adjacent the edge |6 of the side wall of the bag body, and these flaps are provided with fasteners, in- 10 I dicated at 32, to cooperate with fasteners 33 carried by the bottom Wall of the bag. The flaps may be in closed position or in open position, as indicated. The flaps 29, 3|] and 3|, when closed, are substantially flush with the wall or face ll] of the bag, and give the appearance, when closed, of decorative panels formed on the wall I!) of the bag proper.
The compartmentat the left under the flap 29 maybe used for carrying a powder box 34, and this flap may, if desired, carry a mirror 35. The center compartment may conveniently carry a revolvable coin holding device 36. While the compartment at the right may be designed to carry a pack of cigarettes indicated at 31, and the fiap 3| arranged to carry a pack of matches, indicated at 38, and a key, indicated at 39. The bag is preferably provided with a lining 40. In use the bag may be handled as indicated in Figure l, and the user may readily flip over one of the flaps to obtain access into the articles carried in the corresponding compartment.
In the arrangement shown in Figure 5, the end wall 4| of the bag is provided with an opening to accommodate a receptacle 42, Which may, if desired, carry a coin box 46. The flap 43 is provided to close the receptacle.
It is obvious that the invention may be embodied in many forms and constructions within the scope of the claims and I Wish it to be understood that the particular forms shown are but two of the many forms. Various modifications and changes being possible, I do not otherwise limit myself in any Way with respect thereto. 45
What is claimed is:
l. A ladys handbag having a bag body, an outwardly opening compartment built therein with the outer edges of the compartmentsubstantially flush with an outer surface of the bag and one side wall at the bottom of the bag, a carrier for holding segregated groups of like coins, mounted in said compartment, and a cover hinged to the bag body above the compartment and provided with a quick detachable fastener whereby the cover can be opened and the desired coin thereafter extracted with one hand.
2. A ladys handbag having a bag body, an outwardly opening compartment built therein with the outer edges of the compartment substantially flush with an outer surface of the bag and one side wall at the bottom of the bag, a carrier for holding segregated groups of like coins, mounted in said compartment, and a cover hinged to the bag body above the compartment and provided with a quick detachable fastener whereby the cover can be opened and the desired coin thereafter extracted with one hand, said detachable fastener in fastened position being located on the bottom wall of the bag body whereby the same is protected against accidental unfastening in said position.
