SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 743,226, dated November 3, 1903.

Be it known that we, FRIEDRICH KARL BEYER, residing at 3 Gsenstrasse, Bielefeld, and CONRAD WERNER WILHELM THEoDoR LIST, residing at 13 Rambergstrasse, Hanover,l in the Kingdom of Prussia and Empire of Germany, subjectsof the King of Prussia, Emperor of Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spittoons, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention has reference to spittoons which may be carried in the pocket of the user. y

Referring now to the drawings, a represents the casing of the spittoon, which consists of a cup-shaped part to which the lid bis hinged. A projection cis provided at the front of the lid b, behind which the projection d of the spring f, which is disposed around the bottle e, engages when the spittoon is in its closed position, Fig. l. Y

In the front of the casing a a hole g is provided,preferably of rectangular form ,through which protrudes the button h of the spring f, and in order that the button hinay not be accidentally pressed, and thereby cause the spittocn to open when in the pocket, a pad t' is disposed around the Lipper part of the aperture g on the casing a..

The object of the casing a is to protect the receptacle e from breakage and also to prevent the sputum being visible to the user; but when it is desired at any time to exarnine the condition of the sputum-say by a medical attendant-Julie glass e may be removed from the casing a. The receptacle c and casing c have preferably no sharp corners, so that the principal hygienic requirement of easy cleaning may be fulfilled.

The vessel c, together with its closing appliance, ts in the casing so as to be easily removed and replaced again in position, and, for example, consists of glass, and on its front, lower, and back sides has a longitudinal groove 7c, into which the spring f fits.

The neck Z of the vessel is preferably of oval or funnel shape, as shown, so as to obtain as large a spitting-opening as possible.

The receptacle c is preferably transparent in order to facilitate inspection by, say, a medical attendant.Y

At the back of the spring f are connected cheeks m, having holes n, to which is respectively hinged one free end o of the clip or clasp q, which surrounds the closingstop- Tile front part of the clip q, which is preferably made of wire, is turned up into a projection fr, so that when the pocketspittoon is opened the projection c of the casing-cover b seizes. the wire clip q, together with the stopper @and carries with it both these parts, so opening the receptacle for use.

The water-tight closing of the receptacle e is attained by the pressure upon the stopper p, which is of an elastic nature, and when the pressure of the casing b upon the rubber stopper p ceases, as by actuating the button h of spring f, the elasticity of the stopper p will cause the cover b to be raised, and by turning back of this cover b, which, as previously stated, carries with it the stopper p, the receptacle c is opened.

The spring f may be secured in position or released by simply pushing it on or off the vessel c.
