GUSTAVE REHMANN, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
INSTRUMENT OR OTHER CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 778,268, dated December 27, 1904.
i Application filed January 28,1904- Serial No. 190,918.
To ail whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUsTAvE REHMANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New which are employed by surgeons for the carry ing therein of surgical instruments and Vials containing fluids.
The present invention is also applicable to other styles and classes of cases, such as the cases which are carried in the pocket and are f 1)r the reception of cigarettes and other arti- 0 es.
The invention relates more particularly to a novel construction of pocket or other case provided with a supporting plate or body and a means of pivotal or oscillatory connection between the said plate or body and a part of the case whereby the supporting plate or body can be lifted or raised directly above the edge or the bezel of the case to permit of the instruments or other articles held or retained upon the said supporting-plate to be most'conveniently removed therefrom when desired for use. I
The invention relates, furthermore, to a pocket or other case provided with such supporting plate or body adapted to be raised directly above the edge or the bezel of the case, but the said supporting-plate being movably connected with a base-plate, which in turn is movably and preferably detachably connected with a portion or portions of the body of the case, so that both said plates can be removed entirely from the body of the case, if desired.
The invention has for its principal object to provide a pocket or other case for the purposes above enumerated which shall be neat in" appearance and shall be of a simple, strong, anddurable construction, the movable parts of the case for presenting the instruments, vials, or other articles for use, while being raised abovethe edge of the bezel of the case, not of necessity being detachable from the body of the case, but being capable of bringing the supporting-plate in its most convenient position above the body of the case for the removal of the instruments, vials, and other articles from the said supporting-plate.
A further object of this invention is to provide, in connection with the said supportingplate and the base-plate and with the said baseplate and the body of the case, means for retaining these parts normally in held or locked engagement.
My present invention consists, therefore, in the novel construction of pocket or other case embodying the various principles hereinafter fully set forth; and, furthermore, this invention consists in the various arrangements and combinations of the devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction thereof,-
all of which will be more fully described in the following specification andthen finally embodied in the clauses of the claim which are appended to and form an essential part of this specification.
.The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of acase provided with an instrument or article holder embodying the principles of my present invention,
the lid or cover of the case being represented in its raised or open relation with the body of the case; and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the said parts, said section being taken on line 2 2 in said Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the said case and the instrument or article holder in its raised position above the edge or the bezel of the case, but still connected with the body of the case by means of a base-plate; and Fig. 4: is a longitudinal vertical sectional representation of the said parts, said section being taken on line' t 4: in said Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a side view of the instrument or article holder in its detached and removed position from the body of the case. Fig. 6 is an end elevation of the same, and
Fig. 7 is a transverse vertical section taken on line 7 7 in said Fig. 5. Fig. 8 is a collective perspective view of the base-plate, the supporting-plate, and other parts of the instrument or article holder, the said parts being represented in their detached relation.
Similar characters of reference are employed in the above-described views to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now to the said drawings, the reference character 1 indicates the complete case, the same comprising the body 2 and a lid or cover 3, which is connected with the said body in any usual and well-known manner. The said body 2 is provided with a bezel 4:, which may be a strip or flat band extending above the upper edge of the surrounding sides of the body 2 of the case and is arranged in such a manner that a projection. shoulder, or the like, as 5, is formed at any suitable point or points Within the said body of the case. Removably arranged within the said body 2 and detachably held in engagement With said projection, shoulder, or other extension is a base-plate 6, the said plate being of any desired and suitable marginal configuration and, as will be seen more especially from an inspection of Fig. 8, the said baseplate being provided with laterally-extending arms or members 7 to permit the said baseplate to be easily centered in the body of the case when placed therein. The said base-plate 6 is provided at its opposite end portions with upwardly-extending arms or retaining members. 8 and 9, each member being provided with asuitably-made holding portion 10, adapted to be placed or sprung in spring engagement or in detachable holding engagement with the projections, shoulders, or extension 5 of the body 2 of the case 1. One of the said spring-arms or retaining members,as 8, is preferably provided with a suitably-formed lift or finger-piece, as 11, by means of which the holding portion 10 of the arm or member 8 may be disengaged by inward pressure from its engagement with the shoulder, projection, or extension when it is desired to lift the baseplate 6 entirely from within the body 2 of the case 1. The said base-plate 6 is also provided with open end portions 12 and an arrangement of suitably-formed pintle-receiving ears or lugs 13. The instrument, vial, or other article holder also comprises a supporting-plate 141, which may be of any desired ornamental marginal configuration, as clearly indicated in the several figures of the drawings. The said supporting-plate 14 is provided at its opposite end portions with upwardly-extending spring-arms or etaining members 15 and 16, each member being preferably provided with a holding portion, as 17, adapted to be placed in spring-contact or in detachable holding engagement with the holding portions 10 or other parts of the arms or members 8 and 9 of the base-plate 6. The said member 15 may also be provided with a preferably inwardly extending lift or linger-piece 18, of any suitable shape or construction, for the purposes to be presently described. The said supportingplate 1 L is also made with suitable openings 19, provided with suitably-arrangcd pintlereceiving ears or lugs 20. At the opposite edge each opening 19 is made with laterallyextending open or cut-away parts 21, as illustrated, into which the ears or lugs 13 of the base-plate 6 extend when the two plates 6 and 14 are arranged in their closed or folded relation upon each other. The said supporting-plate 14: is pivotally connected with the said base-plate 6, so as to move or oscillate above the same by means of connecting hinge plates or links 22. Each linl; or plate 22 is provided with the pintle-receiving por- -tions 23 and 24:, the portions Lo of the said links or plates 22 being arranged between the ears or lugs 13 of the base-plate and secured in place by means of the pintles Q5, and the pintle-receiving portions 21 of the said links or plates 22 are arranged between the pintle-receiving ears or lugs of the supporting-plate 14: and are secured in place by means of pintles 26, clearly illustrated in the several figures of the drawings. Thus the two plates 6 and 14 are separably and movably connected with each other, being capable of being folded into their closed relation, one directly over the other, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, or being capable of being moved one above the other and held in such separated relation by the arrangement of the said plates 22 in the man- 'ner' represented in Figs. 3, a, 5, 6, and 7, so as to bring the plate 14 above the edge or the bezel of the body of the case, with the said plate 14% and its instruments, vials, or other articles entirely removed from within the main body portion of the case and for the ready withdrawal and manipulation of the instruments, vials, &c., as will be clearly understood.
The supporting-plate 14 when used with cases for carrying surgical instruments and vials containing medicines or drugs is provided with any number of suitably-placed clamping or holding members or receivingposts 27, usually provided with lugs or cars 28, which are inserted in holes or openings 29 in the plate 14 and are then bent over so as to secure the said clamping or holding members or receiving-posts in place; but of course it will be evident that any other suitable means for securing said members or posts in position may be employed.
From the previous description of my present invention it will be clearly evident that I have devised a neat and serviceable case which is especially adapted for use with surgical instruments and vials and which can be conveniently carried in the pocket.
