14 Elaims.
My invention relates to vanity cases and bracelets, and its objects are to provide a vanity case construction and mounting adding to the convenience of carrying and using the vanity case; and to provide for carrying a handkerchief in such manner that it is readily accessible and is readily removed from and replaced in the carrier. A further object is to provide such a construction and mounting of pleasing appearance and in which the carried handkerchief contributes to such appearance. Other objects will appear in the course of the following description.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a device embodying my invention, with the parts in closed positions.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the same with the parts in open positions.
In the example as illustrated, a resilient strip 1 is curved to retentively contact around the wrist, as a bracelet, with a widened middle part forming a base 2 which is apertured and has fixed in it the lower section 3 of the vanity case, to which the upper section 4 of the case is connected by a hinge 5 at one side. These sections 3 and 4 are so formed at their rims that the upper section 4 will snap snugly into the lower section 3, making a tight closure. The upper section a has a lug 6 to be engaged by the thumbnail for opening it. Thestrip l is folded upwardly to form transverse ribs 7 and 8, spaced outwardly from the opposite ends of the case formed by these sections 3 and 4. The folds are so formed that the upper parts of the ribs are of tubular shape with parts overhanging the base 2 at both sides of the rib.
One rib 7 is slitted close to its junction with the base 2, and the cover 9 has at one end an extension 10 bent downwardly; passing through the slit and bent around the tubular part of the rib, whereby the cover is hinged to the base to swing down across the case. The opposite end of the cover 9 has an extension 11 bent downwardly and then upwardly, forming a tubular transverse fold 12 which, by the resilience of the extension 11, will snap under the adjacent overhanging part of the rib 8 to hold the cover 9 down. This extension 11 has a terminal lip 13 extending out past the rib 8 for engagement of the thumb or finger to open and raise the cover 9. A mirror 14 is mounted in the lower side of the cover 9, and the cover and its extensions 10 and 11 are so proportioned that when the cover is closed down it arches across and is spaced upwardly from the top of the closed upper section 4 of the case. The
outer side of the cover 9 preferably is provided with a decorative design 15.
The handkerchief retaining member 16 comprises a strip bent into arched formation, and is bent at one end to form a tubular hinge part 17. This part 17 is admitted to a depression in the strip 1 between two transversely spaced slits therein, adjacent to which the edge portions 18 of the strip are bent upwardly. A hinge pin 19 passes under these portions 18 and through the tubular hinge part 17 of the member 16. The opposite end of this member 16 has a lip 20 bent outwardly to snap under the overhanging part of the rib 7, against the cover hinge part 10 that extends through this rib. This opposite end part also has a fender part 21 bent inwardly, diverging downwardly from the outwardly bent lip 20 and curving downwardly and engaging its end against the base 2 when the member is closed. This fender part 21 prevents the handkerchief from binding in the sharp corner under the lip 20. The top of the member 16 has a rib 22 transversely of it, which is engageable by the thumb or finger to force the member 16 to open position. Also, the member 16 has an extension 23 past its hinge at its outer end, which is bent upwardly over the member and bowed outwardly therefrom. This extension engages the surface of the strip 1 adjacent to the hinge, to limit the degree of opening of the member 16.
The top of the inner end of the handkerchief retaining member 16 forms a stop engaged by the cover 9 when the latter is opened, holding the cover in raised position for use of the mirror 14. The rib 22 preferably is so positioned that it forms part of this stop. The accessory is placed on the back of the wrist with the handkerchief retaining member 16 at the outer side of the wrist. The cover 9 thus opens outwardly and displays the mirror 14 at the outer end of the vanity case, the upper section 4 of which opens toward the hand, as seen in Fig. 3. The sections 3 and 4 thus are held in horizontal position for most convenient access to their contents, usually powder and rouge, respectively. It will be understood that a thin fabric pufi element is carried in the case for application of the preparations, as is well known in the art.
An advantage of my construction in its preferred embodiment as herein shown, in addition to the convenient carriage of the device, is the provision of the mirror entirely outside the case at all times, and its spacing a substantial distance from the open case when raised for use, avoiding contact of the powder, rouge and the and the retainer being opened an closed easily 7 5 and hayingi aztparti:extendingiabovetsaid.i'coyem part ofs'said :'projectioii to holdthe' inm br M 150 like with the mirror, and consequent clouding hinge and supporting the cover in open position, thereof.
