The invention relates to cosmetics. and more particularly to holders dispensing stick materials such as a lipstick.
According to a preferred form of the invention, the holder comprises a holder tube in which is slidably mounted an operating member projecting from the bottom thereof. Within the holder tube is a U-shaped guide and slidably mounted within this guide is a carrier member holding the lipstick or other stick material. Disposed outside of the U-shaped guide is a stiff spring band thin enough to bend around the lower end of the guide. This band is connected at one end to the operating member and at the other end to the carrier member through a slot in the guide.
If desired, a cover may be hinged to the top of the holder tube, having a spring for urging the,y
cover into open position. A spring catch may be provided also on the holder tube for holding the cover closed and if desired the catch 'may be operated by the movement of the operating member.
The invention also consists in certain new and original features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter set forth and claimed.
Although the novel features which are believed to be characteristic of this invention will be particularly pointed out in the claims appended hereto, the invention itself, as to its objects andadvantages, andthe manner in which it may be carried out, may be better understood by referring to the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part thereof, in which Fig. 1 is a perspective of one form of holder in closed position;
Fig. 2 is a perspective of the holder in open position with the lipstick advanced for use;
Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the holder;
Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is a plan view of the holder in the position shown in Fig. 3;
Figs. 6 and '7 are sections on the lines 6-6 and 1--1, respectively, of Fig. 3;
Fig. 8 is a perspective of the operating member by itself;
Fig. 9 is a perspective of the guide member by itself;
Fig. 10 is a perspective of the preferred form of holder in open position;
Fig. 11 is a vertical section of the holder shown in Fig. 10; and
Fig. 12 is a. detail illustrating the operating member.
In the following description and in the claims,
(Cl. G-56) various details will be identified by specific names for convenience, but they are intended to be as generic in their application as the art will permit.
Like reference characters denote like parts in the several figures of the drawings.
In the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specification, certain speciilc disclosure of the invention is made for purposes of explanation, but it will be understood that the details may be modified in various respects without departure from the broad aspect of the invention.
Referring to the drawings, (Figs. 1-9), the holder comprises essentially the holder tube I0, cover II, U-shaped guide I2,operating tube I3, carrier member I4, holding lip-stick I5 and flexible'ball I6.
The holder tube I0 is open at the bottom and has an inwardly projecting flange 20 at the top, said flange having notches 2| for a purpose hereinafter described. At the top of the holder tube is also an aperture 22 for the catch, as hereinafter described.
The cover |I is provided with an outwardly projecting portion 23 forming a recess for the catch. The cover is connected to the holder tube I0 by ahinge made up of lugs 25 secured to the cover (Fig. 5), lugs 24 secured to the holder tube, a pintle 26 and a wire spring 21 surrounding the pintle and having one end disposed o against the flange 20 and the other end passing through an opening in the wall of the cover, as indicated at |21 in Fig. 3. The spring 21 acts always to urge the cover to open position.
For holding the cover closed, a catch is provided having a spring portion 21 secured to the holder tube by rivet 28 an'd a lug 29 disposed in the opening 22. The spring 21 is biased to nor' mally hold the catch in the position shown in Fig. 3.
The guide member I2 (Fig. 9) is provided with a slot 3| in one side thereof, each side having side flanges |3I forming side channels. At the bottom end of the guide member I2 the channels are closed by a wall 30 forming a tubular guide at this point for the ilexible band I6, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. The guide member l2 may be made from sheet metal bent to the shape shown.
The operating member I3 (Fig. 8) has a flanged bottom 33, an opening 34, a slot to the inside of which is secured a plate |35 forming in effect a shallow recess to receive the spring 21 of the catch (Fig. 3).
The carrier Il holds the lipstick I5 and is connected to the exible band I6 by rivet 36 passing through the slot 3|.` The band I6 passes through the guide portion 30, extending down one side of the guide and up the other to be secured to the operating tube I3 by a rivet 31 which passes through the opening 34 in the operating tube.
'I'he U-shaped guide I2 is secured within the holder tube I9 by solder, indicated at 38 in Figs. 3 and 5, the side flanges I 3| of the guide fitting in the notches 2| of the holder tube I0.
When the holder is closed, the operating member I3 is disposed substantially entirely within the holder tube I0 so that its wall member |35 holds the catch 29 in a position projecting out of the opening 22 so that the catch is disposed in the recess 23, holding the cap I closed.4
To use the holder, the operating tubeIB is pulled downwardly to the position shown, for instance, in Fig. 3. 'I'his allows the catch 29 to spring inwardly, releasing the cover II, which springs to the open position. At the same time, moving the flexible banditi downwardly on one side forces the other side thereof upwardly to feed the lipstick I5 outwardly.
To close the holder, the operating tube I3 is moved inwardly, this serving to move the lipstick I5 also inwardly. The cover II is then closed by hand, the catch 29 yielding suiiciently to engage the recess 23.
Referring now to the form preferred at this time, illustrated in Figs. 10, 11, and 12, it will be noted that the construction is quite similar to that illustrated in Figs. 1 to 9, inclusive. In the preferred form, however, instead of using an operating tube a at operating member or rod 41 is used. Also, the holder tube indicated by 49 is closed at the bottom by a closure 5| soldered to or tightly pressed onto the lowerend of the holder tube.
The operating member 41 has a curved ngerengaging portion 48 and a notch 50 closed on one side by a plate 49. 'Ihe operating member 41 passes through an opening in the bottom closure 5| and is secured to the operating band 45.
The plate 49 serves to engage the spring catch 46 when the former is in its uppermost position to hold the cap 4| closed in the same manner as described in connection with Figs. 1 to 9. The cap 4| is mounted upon the holder tube 40 by a spring hinge in the same manner as the cap in Figs. 1 to 9. 'I'he U-shaped guide 44 is similar in construction to ,the U-shaped guide I2 except that the projections 32 are no longer necessary. The U-shaped guide is held in position between the closure 5| and the annular inturned flange 52.
'Ihe holder 43 holds the lipstick 42 which is operated by the band 45. The band 45 is connected at one end to the plate 49 and at the other end to the carrier member 43 thru the slot |44.
It is thought the operation of this holder is obvious from the construction thereof and from the explanation of Figs. 1 to 9. To open the holder it is only necessary to pull down upon the operating member 41. This causes the catch 46 to move inwardly which in turn allows the cap 4| to spring open. Downward movement of the operating member 41 causes the lipstick 42 to move upwardly and vice versa.
'Ihe preferred form of holder has the advantages of being less expensive to manufacture and of obviating the soldering of the U-shaped guide to the upper end'of the holder tube. Furthermore, the provision of the bottom closure 5I assists in imparting a more balanced appearance to the holder when closed, since it offsets the cap on the other end.
Thus a holder for stick material has been provided which is neat and attractive in appearance and simple in construction and operation. The feed of the lipstick can' be nicely controlled to project the stick material to any desired distance. The automatic opening of the cover makes the holder easier to use.
While certain novel features of the invention have been disclosed and are pointed out in the annexed c laims, it will be understood that various omissions, substitutions and changes may be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of the invention.
