Another frequent difficulty withtliis type of holder is the presence of one or more points of leakage through which dust creeps in while the holder is being carried loose in a handbag. The trade `demands lipstick holders which are rectangular in cross seotion; and as heretofore constructed, such holders have required various drawn metal members of rectangular cross section, which are not as desirable from a manufacturing standpoint as drawn metal membersY of circular cross section.

An object of the presentinvention is to provide an improved automatic lipstick holder of such construction that it is effectively dust-proof and can also be satisfactorily and economically manufactured on a production basis.

` Another object of the invention is to provide an automatic lipstick holder Awhich'is rectangular in external shape but utilizes for most of its parts drawn metal members which are circular in cross section.

Other objects of the invention will be obvious from the following disclosure, and some of such additional objects relative to details of construction which give the lipstick holder desirable manufacturing or operating characteristics.

An outer tubular member 3, of` circular cross section, is provided with avlongi` tudinal slot l and has a pressed out hollow portion 8 in which is pivoted a closure 9. Project-f ing inwardly from the tube 5- is a studorpin I0 which may be integral with the tube or.at-' tached to it in any suitable way. `As shown, the stud I0 is blind riveted to the tube, but` it may be soldered or otherwise suitably secured.`

Inner tube IV is telescoped downwardly into outer tube 6, the stud I0 entering and passing along the short slot 3.y The slots 2 and 'I .are so related that they register with one another when pin III is at a point in slot section 3a. When pin IIJ is in the upper straight portion of slot 3 (as is the case when the parts are in the positionsshown in Figs. III and VI) slots 2 andi! do not register, with the result that tube .I overlaps or closes slot l.` l

A lipstickl I is mounted. in a carrier designated as a whole by I2.` The carrier consists of aitubular section I3, having an internal bead I3a, and a cup I4 having a rectangular hole I5 in its bottom. The cup I4 is telescoped against the bead` I3a and is suitably secured to section I3 by friction, solder or otherwise. An exterior, drawn metal, casing I6 is provided with a longitudinal slot I1 and its bottom is closed by a base member I8, secured by friction, solder or otherwise. Theupper end of casing I6 is notched at I9 and provided with an inwardly extending flange which leaves a circular aperture 20a.

After tubular members I and 6 have been telescoped together, as previously explained, the lipstick carrier I2 is telescoped inside of'tube` I from either end. This gives an assembly of parts such as is shown in Fig. VI. Then this assembly of parts is telescoped downwardly into At its upper,v

exterior case I G, and projection 8 enters the notch I9. The notch I9 enables the flange portion to expand slightly during the telescoping operation so that the flange 2 may tightly engage the top of tube 6 or even project over it a trifle to secure the parts together. With slots 2, 'I and I'I in alignment, actuator pin 24 may be inserted through the slots and through a hole in tubular section I3. The pin 24 may be attached to the lipstick carrier in any suitable way. As shown, pin 24 is bent upwardly into holding engagement with one corner of the square hole I5. Attached to actuator pin 24 and located on the outer surface of exterior casing I6 is an actuator button 25.

The operation of the holder is as follows: When the actuator button is in its lowermost position the parts are in the position shown in Figs.

I, III, IV and VI. Slots 'I and II always register with one another, but the extension 2a of slot 2 permits tube I to rotate and cover these slots as shown in Figs. III, IV and VI. To open the holder and project the lipstick for use, it is simply necessary to slide actuator button 25 upwardly. During the initial movement of actuator button 25, actuator pin 24 is held in slot extension 221 and thus tube I is moved upwardly, as well as carrier I2. During this portion of the operation the upper end of tube I pushes closure 9 to open position as shown in Fig. V, and the upper portion of slot 3 slides along pin I0. As the position shown in Fig. V is approached, lateral slot section 3a engages the pin Il) and rotates tube I clockwise (viewed as from the bottom of the holder). This rotation of tube I brings longitudinal slot 2 in alignment with slots I and I'I and also in alignment with actuator pin 24. Thus as the upward movement of actuator button 25 is continued from the position shown in Fig. V, the tube I stands still and pin 24 travels up slot 2. Of course, continued upward movement of the pin 24 continues the upward movement of the lipstick and projects it as shown in Fig. II.

Reverse or downward movement of the actuator button 25 retracts the lipstick and closes the holder. When the pin 24 reaches the bottom of slot 2 it starts to move the tube I downwardly and the cam actionv between slot section 3a and pin I0 rotates tube I counter clockwise (viewed as from the bottom of the holder). Pin 2t is now at the closed end of slot extension 2a and continued downward movement of the actuator button 25 retracts the tube I, along with the lipstick. As tube I approaches its lowermost position nger 4 engages tongue 9a which is integral with the cover 9 and snaps the cover closed (see Fig. III).

In closed position the cover 9 enters aperture 2f!a (see Fig. VII) and rests against the end of tube 6 (see Fig. III), thus the end of the holder is effectively closed against the ingress of dust. Also slot 'I is closed by the non-registration of slot 2 so that dust cannot enter through slot l.

In compliance with the patent statutes I have disclosed the best form in which I have contemplated applying my invention, but it will be realized that the disclosure is illustrative and that Various modifications may be made within the scope of the appended claims.

What is claimed is:

1. A lipstick holder comprising: telescopically related inner and outer tubular members of circular cross section, both members being longitudinally slotted and the slot in one member having a lateral extension; a closure pivoted to the outer tubular member; a lipstick carrier slidable longitudinally within the inner tubular member; a reciprocatory actuator operable to advance and retract the lipstick carrier; and means to reciprocate and also oscillate the inner tubular member in response to an initial portion of the advancing movement and a nal portion of the retracting movement of the actuator, the reciproeating movement of the inner tubular member opening and closing said closure and the oscillating movement uncovering and covering the longitudinal slot in the outer tubular member.

A lipstick holder comprising: telescopically related inner and outer tubular members of circular cross section, both members being longitudinally slotted and the slot in one member having a lateral extension; a closure pivoted to the outer tubular member; a lipstick carrier slidable longitudinally Within the inner tubular member; a reciprocatory actuator operable to advance and retract the lipstick carrier; means to reciprocate and also oscillate the inner tubular member in response to an initial portion of the advancing movement and a final portion of the retracting movement of the actuator, the reciprocating movement of the inner tubular member opening and closing said closure and the oscillating movement uncovering and covering the longitudinal slot in the outer tubular member; and an exterior casing of rectangular cross section, the exterior casing having an aperture which receives said closure when the same is in closed position.

3. A lipstick holder comprising: telescopically related inner and outer tubular members of circular cross section, both members being provided with long longitudinal slots and said slot in the inner member having a lateral extension, the inner member also having a short longitudinal slot with a lateral section; a closure pivoted to the outer tubular member and arranged to be opened and closed by movement of the inner tubular member; a lipstick carrier slidable longitudinally within the inner tubular member; a reciprocatory actuator having a pin passing through said long longitudinal slots and operable to advance and retract the lipstick carrier; and a projection xed to the outer tubular member and extending into the short slot in the inner tubular member, the longitudinal portion of the short slot permitting limited reciprocatory movement of the inner tubular member to open and close said closure, and the lateral section of the short slot cooperating with said projection to effect oscillation of the inner tubular member to uncover and cover the longitudinal slot in the outer tubular member.

4. A lipstick holder comprising: an exterior casing, the casing being closed at the bottom and having at the top an inwardly extending ilange and a downwardly extending notch; a tube having a struck-out projection adjacent to its upper end; a. closure for they tube, the closure being hinged to said projection and the tube being telescoped within said casing with said projection located in said notch; a lipstick carrier slidable Within said tube; and mechanism to actuate the Carrier and open and close said closure.
