Referring in detail to the drawing, the improved holder as here disclosed includes en outer Y casing i5 of'r any desired size and conigoration. As shown in the drawing, the casing is elongated and is transversely rectangular although it be understood that the precise shape is not controlling. In one side wall i6 the casing ls provided with a longitudinally extending slot il extending for a considerable portion of the length ci the casing but stopping short of each oi the ends ci the latter. At its outer or upper end the casing is open while its inner or lower end is closed as by a Wall lo.
The open end of the casing is normally closed by a cover means including a pair of complementary cover sections i9 and 20 each including an upper or ton wall 2i, side Walls 2i? and and a rea-r Wall or rear wall .portion 2Q. Th ce cover sections straddle the open end ci the casing and are arranged in opposing relationship with their rear walls 2l disposed outwardly and with their side walls 22 and 23 arranged one at each side of the casing. Rivets or other suitable pivoting means 25 are passed through openings 26 in the side walls of the cover section and openings 2 in the side walls of the casing whereby to pivotallyA mount the cover sections on the casin Th side walls of the cover sections have their lower opposed'edge portions cut on an arc as indicated at 2li, the centers of the respective arc being represented by the pivots 25. When the cover sections are closed as shown in Fig. 1 the opposed edges of their top and side walls are in abutting relation so as to eiectively exclude powder, tobacco crumbs and the like, and their rear wall portions 215i are arranged above the upper or outer ends of the edge walls of the casing. It will, therefore, be seen that when the cover sections are in closed position the open end of the casing is fully closed. On their pivots 25 the cover sections may be rocked into open positions in which they are disposed laterally of the receptacle as shownin Figs. 3 and 6 and it will be noted that their arcuate edges 2S provide proper clearance.
Within the casing there is arranged a carrier 29 in the form of a small receptacle and this carrier is preferably of a size and shape to substantially iill the casing in a direction transversely of the casing. The carrier receives the lower end portion of a lipstick 3D and is adapted to be projected and retracted to project the lipstick for use and to retract or withdraw it into the casing after use. A finger piece 3l in the form of a. button is arranged at the outer side of the casing and has a stem portion 32 extending through the slot Il in the casing and this stem portion at its inner end is connected to the carrier in any suitable manner as by having its inner end portion 33 reduced and passed through the carrier and riveted over as clearly shown in Fig. 5. -By engaging the nger piece iii and shifting it along the slot il the carrier 29 may be shifted to projected and retracted positions. In one of its walls the carrier has a portion 3d lanced and pressed therefrom to form a spring Ytongue which frictionally engages the inner surface of a wall of the casing whereby the carrier may be given a smooth v steady movement in the casing and whereby the carrier will be frictionally retained in the desired adjusted position within the casing.
Within the casing between the carrier 2d 'and the wall Iii of the casing there is arranged a cam or operating plate 35 shown alone in Fig. 9. This plate is of less width and length than the wall i@ ci the casing and is provided with a longitudinallyextending slot 36 which at its lower end is oi'd set laterally as at il? whereby a shoulder Sil is provided; lin-its upper end portion the plate 35 is provided with a transversely extending slot 39 and inwardly of its upper end it is cut away to provide a straight surface or wall itl communieating with an inclined slot lil having an upper wall i2 and a lower wall d3. In its opposite edge and adjacent its inner end the cam plate is cut away to provide a straight surface or wall M and an inclined or cam surface 45.
The stern or shank 35i of the button or finger piece 3l extends through the slot 36 of the plate a short projection or stud 45"and adjacent the lower end of the wall i6 a portion is pressed in to provide a stud or projection 41 and the projection 46 eo-operates with 'the edge 4@ and slot 4i and the projection 4l co-operates with the edges 4Q anemia and 55, all on the plate 35, in a manner which will later be fully described.
Arcuate slots iii and 49 are provided in the wall i6 o the casing adjacent the open end of the casing and each of these slots is struck on an arc the center of the radius of which is represented by the pivot openings 2li or by the pivots 2d in said openings. Each slot is closed at its ends as clearly shown in Figs. 6 and 7 and on its side wall 22 each cover section l and 2d carries an inwardly projecting pin 5t and the pin of cover section li passes through the arcuate slot it and into the transverse slot liti in the upper end portion of the operating cam plate 35. Similarly the pin 5! of cover section 20 extends through the arcuate slot t9 and into the transverse slot 39.
In the operation of the device assuming the cover sections to be closed as shown in Figs. l and 2, the device may be held in one hand and the finger piece 3l engaged with the thumb of that hand. On an upward pressure being applied to the finger piece its stem or shank 32 engages the shoulder 33 of the plate and shifts the plate upwardly.A As the platernoves upwardly it carries the pins 50 on the side walls of the cover members upwardly shifting said pins through the arcuate slots 4B and 4B and rocking the cover members about their pivots 25 so that the cover members are carried to their open po sitions.
During this initial movement of the plate its straight edges or walls iii and @il are in engagement with the studs or projections i5 and fl'l respectively. After a short upward movement "1 the said studs are engaged by the lower inclined wail d3 of slot il and by the inclined wall iii and further lipward pressure on the finger piece results in the cam plate being shifted laterally to bring its longitudinal slot 36 into registry with the longitudinal slot i'i in the side wall of the casing. When the parts reach this position the cover sections are open and the finger piece may be shifted upwardly shifting the carrier 29 'upwardly to project the lipstick for use. As the spring tongue 3ft of the carrier is in engagement with the wall of the casing the carrier will be frictionally retained in adjusted position.
After the cosmetic has been used the ringer piece 3l is drawn downwardly through the regis'terng slots 36 and l'l drawing the carrier downwardly and retracting the lipstick into vthe casing. As the finger piece approaches the end of its inward or downward movement its stem engages the curved wall 5l of slot 36 and has a tendency to draw the plate 35 into the casing and to shift the plate laterally. 'I'his tendency to shift the plate laterally is assisted by engagement o the stud t@ with the upper inclined wall 42 of slot di and the lateral movement of the plate carries its slot 36 out of registry with the slot it in the wall of the casing. The iinal movement of the cam plate is a straight longitudinal movement since its straight edge portions 4B and Ml are in the nal movement ofl the plate in engagement with the studs 46 and 41 respectively.
During this final downward movement of the cam plate the cover sections I9 and 20 are swung about their pivots into their closed positions. This action takes place owing to the fact that the pins 5G on the side walls 22 of the cover sec tions are engaged in the slot 39 in the upper end portion of the cam plate and as the cam plate is drawn downwardly said pins are also drawn .downwardly rocking the cover sections about the 2,091,312 pivots z5 and into closed abutting relation. rtl
will be apparent from a consideration of Figs. 1 and 3 that the side walls 22 of the cover sections serve to cover the arcuate slots I8 and I9 5 when the cover sections are in either closed or open positions. y The improved holder may be operated with but one hand while a mirror or the like is sup'- ported in the other hand and vin the operation of tions to open position before the lipstick reaches a position to engage said cover sections; Ori the return movement of the finger piece the lipstick is entirely within the casing before the cover sections are rocked to closed positions. 'I'his action of retracting the lipstick into the casing and of closing the cover sections may be performed with but one hand since the finger piece may be operated by the thumb of thehand in which the device is held.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that the improved device includes but a relatively few parts which may be stamped from sheet metal and easily and quickly assembled. While the studs 46 and l1 are shown as pressed from a wall of the casing it will be understood that they may be in the form of separate pins suitably at- ,tachecl to or mounted on the casing. On the lower end of the casing there is shown a cap 52 which will give the same ai'lnished appearance and which may be used as a support. l Having thus set forth the nature of my invention, what ll claim is: j
