8 Claims. (Cl. 132-79) This invention relates to lipstick holders and more particularly to a combined lipstick and mirror arrangement. v
In accordance with the invention I provide a cosmetic carrier, such as a lipstick, slidably arrangedin a casing. The casing has a cover bearing a mirror which opens upon depression of one or two push buttons. The mirror on the cover of the casing preferably is a reducing mirror so that a person holding the lipstick arrange- The lipstick reciprocates in the casing, and upon opening of the lid the lipstick is caused to project from the casing.
The lipstick holder of the invention has automatic means for advancing the lipstick a greater distance from the casing each time .the lid is opened. In other words, while the .lipstick reciprocates in the casing and projects therefrom on opening of the lid, it is advanced a slightly larger distance each time the lid is opened, in order to compensate the used-up portion of the lipstick. Furthermore, hand operated means are provided for retracting the lipstick into the casing if it should project too far therefrom.
The lipstick holder of the invention is easy to operate with one hand. The cover can be opened by depressing two push buttons. When the lid is opened the person can see herself in the mirror and can apply the lipstick to her lips. Besides, the lipstick is automatically advanced step by step uponv opening of the lid so that it .always projects about the same distance from its casing. Hence, the wear of the lipstick is automatically compensated.
It is accordingly an object of the present invention to provide'a novel lipstick holder having a pivoted lid bearing a mirror.
Another object of the invention is to provide a lipstick holder. which is automatically expelled from its casing upon opening the lid thereof.
Still another objectof the invention is to provide a lipstick holder reciprocating in a casing upon opening and closing of the lid and which is automatically advanced a larger distance each time the casing lid is opened.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved lipstick of the type referred to including a hand operated means for retracting the lipstick if it should project too far out of the casing when the lid is opened.
These and further objects of the invention will become more apparent in the following description of a preferred embodiment thereof illustrated in the drawing, wherein:

Referring to the drawing and more particularly to Figs. 1 to 6, the lipstick holder of the invention comprises a casing l5 having side walls I6, I! and a top wall l8. Cover 20 is pivoted to casing l5 by means of a pintle 2|. Cover 20 has 9. depending portion 22 covering front face 23 of housing I5 when the lid is closed. Cover 20 serves as a panel for mirror 24 which is a reducing or convex mirror. Spring 25 arranged about pintle 2| presses against top wall l8 of easing l5 and urges cover 20 into the open position of Fig. l.
Sleeve 4| has a helically extending guide slot 42 through which pin 31 extends as clearly shown in Figs. 4 and 5. Sleeve 4| is guided in tube 43 secured to front face 23 and open at the bottom as illustrated in Fig. 6. Sleeve 4|- and tube 43 have a frictional contact with each other so that sleeve 4| can not rotate freely.
In accordance with the invention I provide means for rotating helical gear 45 in response to the opening and closing movements of cover 26. Hence, sleeve 4| is rotated simultaneously causing a corresponding movement towards the right or left of lipstick 35. -This is due to the fact that pin 31 is advanced or retracted by the rotation of helical guide slot 42 in sleeve'4l. In order to accomplish the advancing and retracting movement of lipstick 35 with respect to sleeve 4| I provide a screw 55 countersunk in top wall l8 of casing l5. Screw 55 has a pin 56 pivoted thereto at 51 as shown particularly in Figs. 8 and 10. Spring 58 urges pin 56 against projection 60 of screw 55. Hence, as clearly shown in Figs. 8 and 10, pin 56 can rotate counterclockwise against the action of spring 58, but is prevented from further rotating in a clockwise direction from the position of Fig. 8 due to proiectlon 60'.
Opening and closing of cover 20 causes a corresponding reciprocating movement of sleeve 4| and helical gear 45 in the manner described hereinabove. When cover 20 is closed, helical gear 45 moves towards the right of Fig. 4. As shown in Figs. '7 and 8 pin 56 engages with helical ridge 6| on gear 45 because gear 45 is moved towards the right against pin 56. Hence, gear 45 rotates with top coming corresponding to a clockwise rotation of gear 45 as viewed in Fig. 5. Gear 45 has such a width that it completely clears pin 56 when lid 26 is fully open or closed. When cover 20is opened, gear 45 moves towards the left below pin 56 as illustrated in Figs. 9 and 10. Now pin 56 engages with the next ridge 62 and yields as shown in Fig. 10 due to the action of spring 58. Gear 45 passes below pin 56 which is now in a position to engage the upper surface 63 of ridge 62 when the cover is closed and gear 45 moves towards the right.
Hand operated button 65 is provided in a suitable opening in top wall l8 of easing l5. Button 65 serves to rotate gear 45 in a direction opposite to the one caused by the reciprocating movement of gear 45 underneath pin 56. Push button 65 is connected with L-shaped pusher 66. Spring 61 shown in Fig. 4 is enclosed by housing 66 on top wall l8 and urges pushbutton 65 upwards. By depressing push button 65 pusher 66 engages with one of the teeth of gear 45 and rotates gear 45 in a counterclockwise direction or with top going as viewed in Fig. 4.

The operation of my improved lipstick holder will now be evident. Casing I5 is opened by depressing push buttons 36. This causes rotation of lid 26 in the manner described hereinabove and simultaneously expels lipstick 35. Lipstick 35 may then be applied to the lips of the holder who can view herself in reduced mirror 24. when lid 26 is closed again, the reciprocating movement of sleeve 4| towards the right of Fig. 4 causes rotation of helical gear 45 to advance lipstick 35 away from gear 45. In case the lipstick should project too far from housing l5 when lid 20 is opened push button 65 may be depressed. This causes a rotation of sleeve 4| to retract lipstick 35 against gear 45.
It is to be understood that modifications may be made in practicing the present invention without departing from the broader principles and scope thereof, and accordingly I do not intend to be limited except as set forth in the followingv claims.
I claim:
1. A cosmetic holder comprising an exterior casing, a cover pivoted to said casing, spring means for urging said cover towards its open position, locking means for releasably holding said cover in its closed position, a slotted guideway in said casing, a sleeve rotatably mounted in said casing and having a helical guide slot extending about its surface, a cosmetic carrier slidably mounted in said sleeve, said carrier having a pin extending through the slot in said sleeve into said guideway, a linkage connecting said sleeve with said cover for advancing and retracting said sleeve upon opening and closing of said cover, and mechanism operative upon the reciprocating movement of said sleeve for rotating said sleeve through a predetermined angle for projecting said carrier from said sleeve.
2. A cosmetic holder comprising an exterior casing. a cover pivoted to said casing, spring means for urging said cover towards its open position, locking means for releasably holding said cover in its closed position, a longitudinally extending slotted guideway in said casing, a sleeve rotatably mounted in said casing and having a helical guide slot extending about its surface, a cosmetic carrier slidably mounted in said said carrier having a pin extending through the slot in said sleeve into said guideway, a linkage connecting said sleeve with said cover for advancing and retracting said sleeve upon opening and closing of said cover, and mechanism operative upon the reciprocating movement of said sleeve including a gear secured to said sleeve for rotating said sleeve through a predetermined angle for projecting said carrier from said sleeve.
3. A cosmetic holder comprising an exterior casing, a cover pivoted to said casing, a mirror on said cover, spring means for urging said cover towards its open position, locking means for re-- leasably holding said cover in its closed position, a longitudinally extending slotted guideway in said casing, a sleeve rotatably mounted in said casing and having a helical guide slot extending about its surface, a cosmetic carrier slidably mounted in said sleeve, said carrier having a pin extending through the slot in said sleeve into said guideway, a linkage connecting said sleeve with said cover for advancing and retracting said sleeve upon opening and closing of said cover, and mechanism operative upon the reciprocating movement of said sleeve for rotating said sleeve through a predetermined angle for projecting said carrier from said sleeve, said mechanism including a helical gear secured to said sleeve, and a pin projecting from said casing and arranged for engagementwith the teeth of said gear.
4. A cosmetic holder comprising an exterior casing, a cover pivoted to said casing, a reducing mirror in said cover, a spring for urging said cover towards its open position, a longitudinally extending slotted guideway in said casing, a sleeve rotatably mounted in said casing and'having a hellcal guide slot extending about its surface, a cosmetic carrier slidably mounted in said sleeve, said carrier having a pin extending through the slot in said sleeve into said guideway, a linkage connecting said sleeve with said cover for adyancing and retracting said sleeve upon opening and closing of said cover, and mechanism operative upon the reciprocating movement of said sleeve for rotating said sleeve through a predetermined angle for projecting said carrier from said sleeve, said mechanism including a helical gear secured to said sleeve, a pin pivoted to and projecting from said casing and arranged for engagement with the teeth of said gear, a stop for preventing rotation of said pin in one direction from its normal position, and a spring urging said pin against said stop.
5. A cosmetic holder comprising an exterior casing, a cover pivoted to said casing, spring means for urging said cover towards its open position, locking means for releasably holding said cover in its closed position, a longitudinally extending slotted guideway in said casing, a sleeve rotatably mounted in said casing and having a helical guide slot extending about its surface, a cosmetic carrier slidably mounted in said sleeve, said carrier having a pin extending through the slot in said sleeve into said guideway, a linkage connecting said sleeve with said cover for advancing and retracting said sleeve upon opening and closing of said cover, mechanism operative upon the reciprocating movement of said sleeve for rotating said sleeve through a predetermined angle for projecting said carrier from said sleeve, said mechanism including a helical gear secured to said sleeve and a pin projecting from said casing and arranged forengagement with the teeth of said gear and a hand operated device for rotating said gear in ,a direction for causing retraction of said carrier into said, sleeve and against said gear.

A cosmetic holder comprising an exterior casing, a cover pivoted to said casing; a mirror on said cover, a spring 'for urging said cover towards its open position, a latch on said cover, two push buttons slidable in said casing and having means for engaging said latches, a spring urging said push buttons into their inoperative position, a longitudinally extending slotted guideway in said casing, a sleeve rotatably mounted in said casing and having a helical guide slot extending about its surface, a cosmetic carrier slidably mounted in said sleeve, said carrier having a pin extending through the slot in said sleeve into said guideway, a linkage connecting said sleeve with said cover for advancing and retracting said sleeve upon opening and closing of said cover, and mechanism operative upon the reciprocating movement of said sleeve for rotating said sleeve through a predetermined angle for projecting said carrier from said sleeve, said mechanism including a helical gear secured to said sleeve, a pin pivoted to and projecting from said casing and arranged for engagement with the teeth of said gear, a stop for preventing rotation of said pin in one direction from its normal position, and a spring urging said pin against said stop.

A cosmetic holder comprising an exterior casing, a cover pivoted to'said casing, a spring for urging said cover towards its open position, locking means for releasably holding said cover in its closed position, a longitudinally extending slotted guideway in said casing, a sleeve rotatably mounted in said casing and having a helical guide-slot extending about its surface, a cosmetic carrier slidably mounted in said sleeve, saidcarrier having a pin extending through the slot in said sleeve into said guideway, a linkage connecting said sleeve with said cover for advancing and retracting said sleeve upon opening and closing of said cover, and mechanism operative upon the reciprocating movement of said sleeve including a helical gear secured to said sleeve and a pin projecting from said casing and arranged for engagement with the teeth of said gear, said linkage including a rod on said gear, said rod having a reduced portion, and a fork forming part of said linkage and engaging with the reduced portion of said, rod.
