means which acts upon the lipstick holder.
Fig. 8 is a perspective view of said lipstick holder, showing the lipstick in partly projected position.
Referring now to the first form of this invention and to Figs. 1, 2, 3, 4, 7 and 8, it will be seen that a compact I3 is provided which has a casing II and a cover l2. The casing may be substantially rectangular in shape, as shown in the drawing, and it may be provided with a powder chamber and a cover I3 therefor. It may contain provision for other cosmetics as well, as for example face rouge. The compact cover I2 is pivotally mounted on the casing II by means of hinge I4. A' torsion spring I5 acts upon the cover to urge it into open position. The cover may have a mirror I6 mounted thereon so that said mirror may be used when the cover is in open position.
The casing is provided with a compartment for lipstick holder 2 I. This compartment should, of course, correspond in shape to the lipstick holder, and it should also correspond in size with the exception that its length or depth should exceed the length of the lipstick holder. In the preferred form of this invention, the lipstick holder is of rectangular configuration and compartment 20 should be of similar shape. A compression spring 22 is mounted in the back of lipstick compartment 20, and it is provided on its front end with a pusher or plunger 23. It is this pusher or plunger which engages the inner end of the lipstick holder and tends to eject said lipstick holder from compartment 20 under the action of compression spring 22. When the lpstick holder is inserted into its said compartment, it abuts pusher 23 and pushes it backwardly to load the compression spring. When the lipstick holder is released for forward or outward movement, it is the loaded spring which effects such movement, thereby ejecting the lipstick holder from its said compartment.
, The lipstick holder 2| comprises a rectangular shell 25 having an elevator 26 and a slide button 2l connected to said elevator through a slot 28 formed in said shell. Lipstick 29 is attached to the elevator for movement into and out of the shell. The lipstick should, of course, be brought into its fully retracted position before the lipstick holder is inserted into lipstick holder compartment 20, else the lipstick would break or become deformed by engaging pusher 23. When the lipstick holder is in its fully retracted or closed position, only its end wall 25a remains open to view, and said wall appears to constitute a panel in the corresponding wall Ila of the compact casing. See Fig. l.
The catch that holds the lipstick holder and the casing cover in closed position is best shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 4. This catch comprises a stud 30 which is axed to a frame 3I which is provided in cover I2 to hold mirror I6 in place. This stud projects at right angles to the main body of. the cover andmore particularly to the plane \p f `the main body of said cover. stud 3u has a slot or groove 32 formed on one side thereof, the back side when the cover is in closed position. A hole 33 is provided in the top wall 34 of casing Il to allow stud 30 to enter lipstick holder compartment 20 when the casing cover is brought into closed position relative to the casing. A similar hole 35 is formed in the top wall 36 of the lipstick holder to enable stud 30 to project into the lipstick holder shell.
When the compact cover and the lipstick holder are both in closed position relative to the casing of the compact, stud 30 projects through holes 33 and 35 and into the shell of the lipstick holder. Under the influence of spring 22, the lipstick holder is urged to move outwardly (to right as viewed in Fig. 3). The top Wall of the lipstick holder is thereby caused to enter slot 32 of the stud, thereby preventing the stud from moving upwardly, thereby and by the same token preventing the cover of the compact from swinging into open position in response to the inlluence of torsion spring I5. Since the groove or slot has a dead end, the stud will prevent the lipstick holder from moving forwardly (to the right as viewed in Fig. 3) beyond its Fig. 3 position. Stud 30 will thereby lock both the compact cover and the lipstick holder in closed position.
To release the catch above described, lipstick holder 2l must be pushed backwardly (to the left as viewed in Fig. 4) beyond its normally closed position as shown in Fig. 3. When the lipstick holder is pushed back to its Fig. 4 position, its top wall disengages slot 32 of the stud and thereby frees the stud for upward movement in response to the action of torsion spring I5 upon compact cover I2. The compact cover is now brought into open position and the slotted stud is no longer in a position to block the forward movement of the lipstick holder under the influence of compression spring 22 thereon. The compact cover cannot be locked in closed position unless the lipstick holder is in its retracted or closed position and the lipstick holder cannot be locked in retracted or closed position unless the compact cover is in closed position too. When it is desired to lock the lipstick holder in closed position in the compact, and to close the compact as well, the lipstick holder is first inserted into its compartment in the compact casing until its end wall 25a extends backwardly of wall Ila of the casing. (See Fig. 4). The cover is then brought downwardly until its stud 30 projects into the shell of the lipstick holder. The lipstick holder is now released and spring 22 causes its top wall 36 to engage slot 32 of the stud. Both the cover of the compact, and the lipstick holder are now locked in closed position.
The only important diierence between compact I0 made in accordance with the first form of this invention and compact 40 made in accordance with the second form of the invention resides in the fact that compact I0 has a powder compartment or chamber whereas compact 40 does not. Hence, compact 40 has a much smaller casing 4I and a correspondingly smaller cover 42 with a mirror 43 of similarly small size mounted thereon. The hinge 44 on which cover 42 is pivotally mounted parallels the lipstick holder compartment in casing 4I whereas compartment 2U of the compact rst above described is perpendicular to hinge I4 of said compact. More specifically, casing II is provided with a lipstick holder compartment and a face powder compartment; casing 4I, on the other hand, is provided with only a lipstick holder compartment. A stud 3B is provided on cover 42 similar to stud 39 on cover l2. Lipstick holder 2l, mounted in casing 4I, is similar to lipstick holder 2l rst above described with the sole exception that its hole 35a, corresponding to hole 35, is on the left side of its top wall 36 instead of on the right side. Casing 4| has a hole 45 formed in its top wall fili corresponding to hole 33 formed in top wall 3A of the compact casing iirst above described. The location of hole 45 corresponds to the location of stud 39 when said stud is in its lowermost position, that is, when cover 42 is. in closed position. Holes 35a and 45 register with each other when the lipstick holder is pushed back of its normally closed or retracted position. In all other respects, the lipstick holder and compact of the second form of the invention are similar to the lipstick holder and compact of the iirst form of this invention, and they cooperate with each other in the manner above described.
The foregoing is descriptive of the two preferred forms of this invention. These preferred forms may be modied in many ways and other forms may be provided within the broad scope and spirit of the invention. For example, compacts other than those shown in the drawing may be provided with lipstick holders in the manner and by the means above described.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A compact of the character described comprising a casing, a cover hingedly mounted on said casing, a spring urging the cover into open position, a compartment for a lipstick holder in said casing, a lipstick holder slidably mounted in said compartment, a spring urging said lipstick holder to move outwardly from said compartment, and a common catch for said lipstick holder and said casing cover which prevents the casing cover from swinging into open position in response to the spring action thereon and prevents the lipstick holder from moving outwardly from its said compartment in respect to the spring action thereon, said common catch comprising a slotted stud on the casing cover and a slot-engaging member on the lipstick holder, said slot-engaging member comprising one of the Walls of the lipstick holder.
2. An article of the character described comprising a lipstick holder, a casing for said holder, said holder being slidably insertable into said casing and slidably removable therefrom, a. hinged cover on said casing and a slotted stud on said hinged cover, said slotted stud being situated to project into the lipstick holder through registering holes in the top walls of the casing and of the lipstick holder when the casing cover is in closed position relative to the casing, said lipstick holder being spring-urged to move outwardly from said casing and being thereby brought into engagement with said slotted stud, to prevent further outward movement of said lipstick holder from said casing and to prevent the casing cover from swinging into open position.
3. A compact of the character described comprising a casing, a cover hingedly mounted on said casing, a spring urging the cover into open position, a compartment for a lipstick holder in said casing, a lipstick holder slidably mounted in said compartment, a spring urging said lipstick holder to move outwardly from said compartment, and a common catch for said lipstick holder and said casing cover which prevents the casing cover from swinging into open position in response to the spring action thereon and prevents the lipstick holder from moving outwardly from its said compartment in respect to the spring action thereon, said common catch comprising a slotted stud on the casing cover and a slot-engaging member on the lipstick holder, the slotted stud projecting into the lipstick holder through registering holes in the top wall of the compact casing and the top wall of the lipstick holder, said top wall of the lipstick holder being situated for engagement with the slot in the stud and constituting the slot-engaging member of the lipstick holder.
