Application March 1, 1956, Serial No. 568,739
12 cxaims. (ci. 132-79) This invention relates to a cosmetic carrying device and in particular to a new and improved carryall type of cosmetic container.
For purposes such as evening use, women have found highly desirable the use of a modified form of compact wherein additional cosmetics and space for items such as hairpins, loose change, and similar miscellany are provided. Various forms of such cosmetic containers are known in the art, being generally designated carryalL The carryalls now known in the art, however, have several disadvantages including difficulty of manufacture, with attendant undesirable high cost.
The principal feature of this invention is the provision of a new and improved carryall having simplified construction. Y
Another feature of the invention is that the carryall is provided with a lipstick container which is removably insertable through an opening in the carryall case, while allowing the cover of the case to remain closed.
A further feature is that the lipstick container is arranged to cooperate with suitable cover latching means to release, when desired, the cover from the closed position.
Still another feature is the provision of a carryall, wherein the latching means comprises a mechanism receivable in the carryall case and aligned automatically with a cooperating latch device carried on the carryall cover by means of the cosmetic holding means.
Yet another feature is that the latch mechanism is provided at one end with a securing means arranged to be locked between the powder holder and the carryall case, and with means for permitting another portion thereof to be yieldably positionable relative to the cover latching device.
Other features and advantages of this invention will be apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure l is an exploded isometric view of a carryall embodying the invention;
Figure 2 is a top plan view thereof with the cover in an open position;
Figure 3 is a front elevational view thereof with the cover in a closed position;
Figure 4 is an enlarged sectional View thereof taken approximately along the line 4-4 of Figure 3;
Figure 5 is a sectional view thereof taken approximately along the line 5 5 of Figure 4;
Figure 6 is an enlarged elevational View thereof with portions broken away; Y
Figure 7 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view thereof showing the latching means in cover-closed position;
Figure 8 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view thereof, similar to Figure 7, but with the latching means in cover-openY relationship; and
Figure 9 is a fragmentary sectional view taken approximately along the line 9-9 of Figure 6i In the exemplary embodiment of the invention as'cis'-"f--:fY
farice closed in the drawings, a cosmetic container of the carryall type is shown to comprise a hollow case 10 having a hingedly connected cover 11. Receivably within the carryall is cosmetic holding or compartment means v12 arranged to hold particular cosmetics such as powder or rouge and other small objects such as hairpins and coins. Also carried within case 10 is a cosmetic retaining member comprising a lipstick well 13 which is arranged to extend in alignment with an opening 10a provided incase 10. Means for retaining the well in this position are provided in the form of a yieldable member 14. A lipstick container 15 is adapted to extend through opening 10a and to be removably carried within well 13, with a manual grasping portion 15a extending exteriorly of the case. Cover 11 is provided with a cooperating latching means 16 arranged to secure the cover releasably in the closed position. The releasing of the latchinU means engagement is effected by manually moving the lipstick container 15 so as to force member 14 and latching means 17 carried thereon inwardly.
Thus, in my carryall is provided a lipstick container readily removable with the cover in the closed position and with the lipstick container also acting as the means for effecting unlatching of the cover when desired. The general structure of the carryall having been described, a more specific description of the elements thereof will now be provided.
Case 10 is provided with a bottom 1Gb having an upstanding yside wall 19C extending peripherally completely around the bottom to form an open-topped container'. I have shown case if) as rectangular, although it shoui be understood that any other desirable and suitable con-v figuration may be used. Hinge means 1S are provided for pivotally securing cover l1 to the Vupper end of one portion of sidewall 16C. Hinge means 18 may be of any suitable type being illustratively shown as comprising ak plurality of spaced, tubular portions 18a on sidewall 10c, a plurality of complementarily spaced, tubular portions 18h on cover 1l and pintle 13C extendim3 longitudinally throughreach of said tubular portions. The upper end of sidewall 16C is provided with a laterally inwardly extending ilange tld which extends over the entire periphery ofthe upper end, except adjacent hinge means i8. Cover 11 comprises a flat plate 11a arranged to extend transversely across the entire open top of case 10 and is provided with a depending peripheral ange 11b arranged to have abutment with sidewall flange whenV thecover Vis in the closed position. To effect improved sealing between cover 11 and case it), an upstanding marginal rim 10c 0n sidewall flange 10d is provided. This rim abuts the lateral inner surface of cover flange 11b when the coverV is in the closed position and thus acts as a movable sealing gasket. lf desired, a mirror lic may be secured.
