ARMIN, GRUNF'ELD BY I forth.
United States Patent 3,006,350 COMBINED WATERPROOF BRACELET AND VANITY CASE Armin Griinfeld, 66-10 Yellowstone Blvd., Forest Hills, N.Y. Filed May is, 1959, Ser. No. 813,963 2 Claims. Cl. 132-43 Thisinvention relates to a waterproof device for carrying cosmetics and the like and adapted to be worn around the wrist by bathers.
The device includes compartments for containing cosmetics such as powder, lipstick, mascara as well as ac.- cessori'es such as a mirror, powder puff, sponge and the like. The device includes a case which may be made of any suitable material such as molded plastic, copper, brass, anymetal plated with silver, gold, chrome and the like. The case has a base and cover hinged thereto. The cover is provided with means for locking and releasing covers of cosmetic containers associated with the case and carried upon a wrist-encircling part of the device.
It is therefore a principal object of the invention toprovide an improved cosmetic container including a wristencircling part and waterproof case.
It is a further object to provide a device of the character described, wherein a sponge is included for serving as a case sealing means, the sponge being detachable for use as a cosmetic removing accessory.
A still further object is the provision of a case 0" a cosmetic container in which. a hinged cover serves to lock and unlock the covers of associated containers of lipstick, rouge and the like.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to. the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the, various novel features of the invention are more particularly set In the accompanying drawings forming a material part of this disclosure:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a device embodying the invention.
FIG. 2 is a side elevational view of the device in a closed position.
FIG. 3 is a cross-sectional view on an enlarged scale taken on line 3-3 of FIG. 2.
FIG. 4 is a front oblique exploded view of the device in an open position.
FIG. 5 is a perspective view of a sponge employed in the device.
FIG. 6 is an enlarged end elevational view of the cosmetic supporting tube as seen from line 66 of FIG. 4.
FIG. 7 is a part elevational and part sectional view of a cosmetic supporting tube with a cap shown in position to be inserted.
FIG. 8 is a view similar to FIG. 2 of a modified form of the invention, the cover being shown open in dot-dash lines.
FIG. 9 is an enlarged horizontal sectional view taken on the plane of the line 9-9 of FIG. 8.
FIG. 10 is a top plan view thereof.
FIG.11 is a top plan view of another modification of the invention.
Referring to the drawings, the device includes a rectangular hollow base 10 shown formed of plastic material, but which may be made of any stutable material, and having integrally formed depending curved legs 12 shaped so as to partially encircle the wrist or arm of the wearer so as to be carried on the wrist or arm of a person. The legs are tapered so that their ends are flex- 3,006,350 Patented Oct. 3-1, 1961 ible and can be. manually separated so as to place the device around the wrist. ofa person.
A rectangular cover 14 is pivotally secured to the base by a hinge 16 formed of a strip of flexible waterproof plastic, material secured to inner sides of rear side walls of, the cover and base. The cover has a top 18 defining a concavity 20 in which is removably seated a rectangular sponge. rubber pad. 22. This pad, as best shown in FIGS. 3.-5, has. a, rectangular cavity 24 adapted to receive a rectangular metal frame 26 in which is secured a mirror 28. coated onthe rear side thereof with a suitable reflective coating 30 The pad 22 fits into the cover snugly so that the edges 31 of its flat outer walls bear down on. the facing upper free edges 32 of the fiat side walls 33, 34, 35, 36 of the base when the base is nested in thecover. Within the: base is a rectangular cavity 38 partially filled with face powder 40 over which is placed a rectangular powder put! 42'. The puff is provided with a cloth handle. 44 secured to the puff by stitching 45 as shown clearly in, FIG. 4.
integrally formed with the base and Wrist-encircling portion are a pair of cylindrical tubes or containers 48, 50 having open ends. The tubes are formed with internal grooves 55 therea-long terminating in notches 55 extending partially around they tubes. Removably plugged in the. ends of the tubes are caps 53, 54 having tubular socketed extensions 56 carrying radial studs 57, that ride in the. grooves 55 and upon turning of the caps become interlocked with the notches 55'. Mounted on the outer sides of each of the caps are two spaced pins 58 and 60.
Extending from the end walls 62 and 64 of the cover are two aligned pins 66. These pins are located so that when the cover is closed on the base as shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, the pins 66 fit between the pins 58 and 60 on each cap and prevent the caps from becoming loose on the containers 48, 50. As the cover is opened to the position shown in; FIG. 4, the pins 66 will turn the caps. 53, 54 angularly, slightly counterclockwise and clockwise respectively, to loosen them on the containers. Thus, the pins 66 cam the caps loose by contact between pins 66 and 60 as the cover is being opened and the pins 66 cam the caps to a locked tight position by contact with pins 58 as the cover is closed, The cover is held closed by engagement of an inner projection or tit 70 on the inner side of its front wall 72, with a recess 74 formed in the forward side 35 of the base, as clearly shown in FIGS. 3 and 4.
The caps 53, 54 carry cylindrical bodies 76 and 78, respectively, of lipstick, rouge, eyebrow pencil, mascara and the like. When the caps are turned to carry the studs 57 out of the notches 55' one or both caps can be drawn out of the containers 48, 50 as shown in FIG. 4. After use the cosmetic can be replaced in the containers 48 and 50 and the caps turned into the position shown by the cap 53 in FIG. 4. The cover can then be closed to lock the caps in position by engagement of pins 66 between pins 58 and 60.
When the cover is in the open position, the mirror 28 is in position for the user to observe her reflection as she applies the cosmetic. If the user desires to remove the cosmetic, the sponge pad 22 can be removed and used for this purpose. When the pad is removed, the mirror 28 is also removed. The mirror acts as a retainer for the pad in the cover. The pad fits snugly in the concavity 20 and provides an effective waterproof seal with the facing edges of the base.
The entire assembly is attractive in appearance, It is relatively inexpensive since it is formed of inexpensive material.
The modified form of device shown in FIGS. 8 to 10, inclusive, differs from the form shown in FIGS. 1 to 7,
inclusive, in that the top of the cover 14 is fiat and substantially oval in plan. Furthermore, the cover is hingedly connected along one, end thereof to the container 50 instead of along the rear side wall of the cover.
The hinged connection includes a pair of spaced hinge knuckles 80, 80 on the end of the cover interlocking with a hinge knuckle 82 on container 50 formed with exten sions on its ends engaging in the ends of knuckles 80, 80. The front 72 of the cover is provided with pins 66 to engage the pins 58' and 60 on the caps 53' and 54', respectively, for loosening the caps for withdrawal thereof. In this modified form, the legs 12' extend to and overlap each other and may be held in overlapped closed condition by a stud 84 extending from the extremity of one leg removably engaging one of a number of spaced slots 86 in the other leg. The legs are adapted to encircle completely the wrist of the wearer.
In all other respects, the form shown in FIGS. 8-10 is similar to the form shown in FIGS. 1-7 and similar reference numerals are used to indicate similar parts.
The modification of the invention shown in FIG. 11 differs from the modified form of FIGS, 8-10 merely in placing the hinge connection along the rear side Walls of the cover 14" and base instead of along one end of the cover and the container 50". The hinge connection includes spaced pairs of hinge knuckles 90, 90 formed on one long rear side of the cover and a pair of spaced knuckles 92 on the base 10 with extensions on their ends interlocking with the knuckles 90, 90.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and that various changes and modifications may be made within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent 1. An article of the character described, comprising a hollow rectangular base, wrist-encircling members inrectangular cover for the base, means for etfecting a waterproof seal between the base and cover including a sponge pad, and a pair of tubular cosmetic containers integral with said base and members and disposed across the ends of the base, each of said containers having a removable cap extending laterally of the ends of the base and carrying a cosmetic, said cover having pins extending from ends thereof, and interlocking elements carried by the caps and engaged by the pins when the cover-is closed on the base, said caps and containers having groove and stud connections, said interlocking elements being a pair of spaced pins on each cap located in the path of movement of the cover pins so that the pins on the cover automatically turn the caps oppositely angularly to lock and unlock the caps as the cover is being closed and opened respectively, said cover being hingedly connected at one end to one of said tubular cosmetic containers, said connection including hinge knuckles on the end of the cover and a coacting hinge knuckle on the adjacent tegrally formed with and depending from the base, a
container.
2. An article as defined in claim 1, wherein the ends of the wrist-encircling member extend to and overlap each other thereby forming a continuous wrist-encircling device, one of said overlapped ends having a stud, the other of said overlapped ends having a series of spaced slots adapt-ed selectively to receive said stud.
