Description

June 1, 1937. c. A. MUREAU COSMETIC APPLICATOR Filed Dec. 24, 1935 fire/Mar Q/A/PZZa/Q/VU/am a M4 155 5 AX/ZVVPE/ Patented June 1, 1937 UNITED STATE OFFICE 3 Claims.
This invention relates to a device for applying cosmetics and relates more particularly to a device for applying powdered rouge, face powder, etc. A general object of this invention is to provide a compact, attractive device for carrying and applying powdered rouge, face powder and the like.
Rouge in a powdered state has certain advantages over cream rouge or rouge in a cake form. Heretofore it has been difiicult to carry powdered rouge in hand bags, etc. in a manner that permits of its ready easy application and the use of powdered rouge has been more or less restricted or curtailed for this reason.
Another object of this invention is to provide a practical, effective device for carrying and applying dry or powdered rouge and other comminuted cosmetics.
Another object of this invention is to provide a puff adapted to hold a supply of powdered rouge or face powder and that is such that the rouge or powder may be directly applied by the pufl, the rouge or powder sifting from the puff when patted on the face.
Another object of this invention is to provide a device or puff that carries a supply of powdered rouge or other powdered cosmetic for application by the puff that is characterized by an observation opening or window by means of which the shade, quantity, quality and other characteristics of the contained cosmetic may be readily determined.
Another object of the invention is to provide a cosmetic applying puff of the character mentioned that includes a transparent closure or covering for the observation opening that is impervious to the cosmetic and lines the pocket of the puif to prevent loss of the cosmetic and soiling of the hands, etc.
Another object of the invention is to provide a cosmetic applying puff of the character mentioned that is easy and convenient to use and that is attractive in appearance.
A further object of the invention is to provide a cosmetic applicator of the character mentioned that is very simple and inexpensive of manufacture embodying a minimum number of simple, inexpensive parts.
The various objects and features of my invention will be fully understood from the following detailed description of a, typical preferred form and application of my invention, throughout which description reference is made to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a case containing pocket l2.
the puff of the present invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical detailed sectional view of the case with the puff removed, being a view taken substantially as indicated by line 2-2 on Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary detailed sectional view taken substantially as indicated by line 3-3 on Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is an elevation view of the back of the puff provided by this invention. Fig. 5 is an enlarged vertical detailed sectional View taken as indicated by line 5-5 on Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view of the edge portion of the puii.
The cosmetic applying puff of the present invention includes, generally, a front element l6 permeable to the cosmetic, a back ll secured to the front element Ill to provide a space or pocket l2 for carrying the cosmetic and having a window opening l3, and a transparent impermeable element I l associated with the back H to close the opening l3 and prevent the loss of the cosmetic from the pocket l2.
The front element H3 is intended to be employed in applying the cosmetic contained in the The front element It! is formed of material or fabric readily penetrated by the powdered cosmetic and its exposed surface is finished to effectively apply and distribute the cosmetic. The front element l0 preferably has a soft nap I5 on its outer side so that the pufi may be patted against the skin to insure the sifting of the powdered cosmetic through the element In and to effect the desired distribution of the cosmetic. In the particular form of the invention illustrated the front element In is substantially disc shaped, it being understood that the element Ill may be of any other shape.
The back H is secured to the front element Ill in the manner to be hereinafter described to form or provide the pocket l2 for containing the cosmetic. The back II is preferably, though not necessarily, formed ofa material substantially impervious to the powdered cosmetic.- In practice I have found it desirable to form the back ll of fabric treated or fabricated to be substantially impervious to the powder. The outer surface of the back ll may have a satin finish or other finish to be attractive in appearance and may carry lettering indicating the make, quality, shade, etc. of the cosmetic contained in the pocket l2. In the preferred construction the back II is of the same shape and size as the front element l0. It is a feature of the invention that the back II has the observation opening or window opening l3 through which the cosmetic in the pocket l2 may be seen. The opening l3 may be shaped and located as desired. In the construction illustrated in the drawing the opening I3 is round and is centrally located in the back II.
The transparent element i4 is provided to prevent the loss of the powdered cosmetic from the opening !3 and to line the back H to prevent the powder from sifting or penetrating through the back. The transparent element ii is in the nature of a sheet of relatively thin transparent celluloid or similar material having a suitable degree of flexibility. In practice the transparent element i5 is of the same shape and size as the back H to lie against and line the inner surface of the back. The transparent element [4 is arranged concentric with the back II to extend completely across and close the Window opening l3.
In accordance with the invention the front element Hi, the back II and the transparent element i i are secured together by a single means. Stitching it connects or secures together the peripheral edge portions of the front element E9, the back H and the transparent element M. The pocket I2 is provided or filled with a desired quantity of powder or powdered rouge and the element 50, the back ii, and the transparent element M are stitched together to close the pocket i2 and thus retain the cosmetic in the puff. The stitching 18 extends completely around the peripheral edge of the puff and is preferably such that it covers or binds the edges of the front element ii], the back i I and the transparent element i i. The
- stitching l6 secures together the front element ID, the back II and the transparent element M to provide a simple symmetrical unbroken cosmetic containing puif. The transparent element l4 arranged between the front element I0 and the back H and connected to them by the stitching I6 stifiens the puff to the, desired extent and yet permits bending or flexing of the puff.
The invention provides a simple, effective case C for the cosmetic containing puif. The case C comprises two sides S of fabric that are formed to be substantially impervious to the powdered cosmetic. The sides S of the case C each comprise two members 20 and 2! of fabric having treated or finished surfaces substantially impervious to powder. The members 20 and 2| of the sides S are arranged with their untreated or unfinished surfaces in abutment or facing each other so that the finished surfaces of the members line the opening 22 of the case and provide the case with finished external surfaces. Stitching 23 connects or secures together the edge portions of the sides S. Where the puff is disc shaped as described above the case C is also disc shaped and stitching 23 extends substantially along its edge, leaving an opening 24 for admitting the puff. The stitching 23 in addition to securing together the sides S of the case binds the edges of the members 20 and 2| comprising the sides. Metal clips 25 may be provided at the opposite ends of the line of stitching 23 to reinforce the case C and prevent loosening or unraveling of the stitching. The clips 25 are not essential and may or may not be used as desired.
It is believed that the utility and practicability of the cosmetic containing puff of the present invention will be readily apparent from the foregoing detailed description. The puff is capable of holding a substantial supply of powdered rouge or other cosmetic in its pocket E2. The cosmetic may be readily applied by patting the skin with the front element In of the puff, the element [0 being penetrable by the powdered cosmetic. The transparent element l4 lines the back II against the penetration or shifting of the cosmetic and stiffens the puff to some extent so that it may be conveniently used in applying the cosmetic. The transparent element [4 extends completely across and closes the window opening 13 preventing the escape of the powdered cosmetic from the pocket i2. As the element M is transparent the shade and other characteristics of the cosmetic in the pocket i2 may be readily observed through the opening i3. Thus the cosmetic applying puff contains a supply of powdered cosmetic in a manner so that the cosmetic may be viewed to determine its color and other characteristics. The single line of stitching l6 effectively and dependably ties together and connects the three parts I0, ii and I4, comprising the puff and binds the otherwise exposed edges of the parts. When the puff is contained within the case C the cosmetic contained within its pocket [2 is substantially prevented from sifting through the pervi'ous front element Ill. The case C thus forms a simple effective device for carrying the cosmetic containing puff in a pocket book or the like. The improved cosmetic containing puff of the present invention consists of only three simple parts and is very inexpensive of manufacture.
Having described only a typical preferred form and application of my invention I do not wish to be limited or restricted to the specific details herein set forth, but wish to reserve to myself any variations or modifications that may appear to those skilled in the art or fall within the scope of the following claims.
Having described my invention, I claim:
