Patented. Oct. 13,v 1936 LIPSTICK HOLDER August Mitchell. New York.' N Y.. minor to Scovill -Manufacturing Company, Waterbury, Conn., a corporationoi Connecticut Application December 1, 1934, serial No. 155,535 fromme. (ci. zoe-5s) 'I'his invention relates to lipstick holders'and the like.
It is an object of the invention to provide an improved. lipstick holder of the so-called auto- 5 matic or one-'handed type. that is, of the type in which the 4holder is opened automatically by 'i the same movement that advances the lipstick. I With this general object in view the invention consists in the ,features combination, details l of constructie @fand arrangements of 'parts which will firs be described in connection with the accompanying drawing and then more partlcularly pointedout.
In the drawing: l Figure 1 isa perspective view of a lipstick holder constructed in accordance with the in-y vention;
. Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same, with parts shown in elevation and broken away, the holderbeing closed;
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view showing the holder open;
Figure 4 is a sectional view (enlarged) taken en .the line 4-4 of Figure 3,- and Figures 5, 6, 7 and 8 are perspective views of certain parts removed.
Referring 4to the drawing, there is provided an outside casing I5-whch`is conveniently rectangular in cross section. For purposes of assembly the lower end of the casing is open, to be closed by a separate closure later referred to. The upper end of the casing is rounded and is out away to form a discharge opening it. In the casing is a liner which is conveniently 35 formed in one piece from a flat stamping. This liner comprises side walls I1, i8 having rounded upper and lower ends. Integral with the side walls is a connecting wall i9 which terminates short of the rounded ends ofr the side walls, as
i0 vappears more clearly in VFigure 5.
`The invention in itsentirety includes a shutter for the discharge opening lin the form of two opposing flexible strips capacitated to meet to close theopening and to separate to open the While this shutter and its operating means may vary in construction, in the embodiment here shown as an example, guidedo r embraces the liner. l The cross-piece 24 of A 55 the operating baicarries a headed pin 25 which serves as an actuating thumb-piece. This pin works in a slot 26 formed in one side of casing i5, the slot being closed at its upper end and open at the lower open end of the casing. 'In
4the embodiment here shown as an example the '5.1
Downward movement of thumb-piece 25 in its l0 slotand the resulting downward movement of the operating bar 24 cause the shutter strips 20, 2| to be separated, thus uncovering discharge opening It. Reverse movement yof the thumbpiece causes thestrps to approach each other lo until their reinforced edges meet (Figure 2),
thus covering or closing the discharge opening.
The closed end of slot 2li serves as a stop to limit upward Vmovement of the thumb-piece to the proper position for the shutter strips to 20 meet.
The invention in its entirety includes means for advancing and withdrawing the lipstick simultaneously 'with the opening and closing of the shutter. Although capable of various con- 2'5 structions, in that here illustrated as an example, one of the shutter strips, i. e. strip 2t,
is formed as the free end portion of a long flexible strip 2t .which extends down around the bottom of the holder and has its other end ,36'
secured, e. g. riveted, to a cup-shaped carrier 29 for the cosmetic pencil or lipstick 30.
The actuating strip is guided in its movements between the casing and the liner, a supplemental arcuate guide member 3l cooperating withv the 35' Vlower rounded ends of the liner side walls' to de- 'ne a curved path at the bottom of the holder'. In closed position of the holder (Figure 2); carrier 29 is withdrawn and shutters 20, 2i cover or close the discharge opening. To operate the 40 holdenthum'b-piece 25 is moved down the slot, thus moving operating bar 24. This separates and pulls down shutter strips 2li, 2i to uncover opening I6 as before described. At the same time v the movement of bar 24 causes actuating strip 45 28 to advance and move lipstick carrier 29 upwardly. vIBy- -the tim'ethe end of the lipstick has reached the discharge opening. shutters 20, 2i have withdrawn outof the way so that upon continued movement of the actuating parts the lipstick is projected through the opening to a position for use (Figure A3) Upon reverse movement of the thumb-piece 25, actuating strip 28 pulls carrier 29.back`into the holder and continuedmovement of-the thumb-piece and operating bar causes shutter strips 23, 2| to return to closing position after the lipstick has been withdrawn.
While the lower end of theholder may be closed in any suitable manner, in the embodiment here illustrated as an example the closure comprises a U-shaped insert having a bottom plate 32 and side plates 33, the latter tting into the open end of the casing with an easy t. As here shown as an example, each of `the side plates 33 of theend closure has a hole 3l adapted to take over dowels 35 on the side plates l1, i3' of the liner. These dowels may con# veniently be formed by striking up the metal of the liner plates. The connection described provides simple and eiIective means for attaining and maintaining 'the proper relative position of the liner in the casing.
vIn order toanchor the unit comprising the liner and end closure in' the casing, the casing I5 has a struck-in nib (not shown) which snaps into a corresponding hole 3i formed in the side plate 33 of the end closure. Each side plate is preferably supplied with such a,hole so that the end closure may be assembled indiilerently faced.
In the embodiment of the invention here illustrated as an example, the lower endof the holder has an ornamental false cap comprising a bottom plate 31 and four roughly triangular spring lingers 33 which grip the four sides of the The holder may convenientlybe assembled substantially as'follows: The ilexible strips having been previouslyA riveted to the operating bar end of slot 26.
and the'lipstick carrier, the carrier, strips and operating bar are assembled with the liner. That unit is then inserted part 'way into the casing, the shank of thumb-piece 25 entering the open The guide piece 3l is loosely positioned in the trough of the end closure 32, 33 and the latter is connected to the liner, the side plates 33 yielding suilciently to permit dowels 35 to snap into holes 34. The complete unit is pushed home and is anchored in place by the nib taking into hole 35. Finally, ornamental cap 31, 33 is pressed into place.
It will now be apparent that the various parts are secured and maintained in their proper position by the mere act of assembling the same. The flexible strips are confined between the casing and the liner; the end closure is automatically anchored in place by the nib and hole 36; the liner is maintained in proper position by lts automatic connection with the end closure and the anchorage of the latter; guide piece 3l, while loosely mounted. is conned between the liner and the bottom plate 32 and between side plates 33 and the casing; and the ornamental cap is anchored by the grip of its spring ngers 33. y
The operation of the assembled holder has already been described. f

2. In a lipstick holder, and in combination, a casing having a discharge opening for a lipstick in its upper end, a lipstick carrier movable in the casing, a. shutter for said opening comprising 'two oppositely disposedllexible strips capacitated to be brought together to close said opening and vseparated to open the same. an operating barfn the casing connected with each o1' said shutter strips, an actuating thumb-piece located outside the casing and connected with said operating bar, the casing having a slot for said .last-named connection, a carrier-moving element comprising a flexible strip passing around the lower end of the casing and connected, respectively, with the operating bar and the" carrier, and guiding means for said strips.
