TApplication filed April 26, 1923.
The invention relates to improvements in vanity boxes or cases of the class containing a mirror and adapted to receive a face-powder compact and a rouge compact and putts or pads therefor.
Qne object of our invention is to provide a vanity case of the class referred to which shall be very durable and have its parts so constructed and connected together that whether the case is opened or closed said parts will be devoid of looseness and especially devoid of pivoted links and the like.
Our box or case comprises a bottom or body member, a cover member hinged thereto and an intermediate slidablesectionconnected by integral inflexible legs with a disk-plate or frame mounted-in saidbody member, said intermediate section being normally housed within the top of said bodymember and adapted to be slid outwardly along the upper edge of said member and remain parallel therewith and have. a firm bearing thereom said intermediate section when supported on the rim of the body member being incapable of tilting downwardly at its forward portion projecting beyond the bodymember.
' ceive a face-powder compact and a puff or pad therefor, and the intermediate slidable section or member may carry the mirror, or
said cover-member may be provided with the mirror and said intermediate slidable section or member utilized to hold the facepowder and the pufi or pad therefon'as may be preferred, in either case the intermediate section serving when in its initial position to expose the face-powder and conceal the rouge and when slid outwardly to expose the rouge for use.
The invention will be fully understood The disk-plate or frame secured in the body member of the case not 7 VANITY BOX.

Fig. 9 is a plan view of a modified construction of avanity box or case. shown in full open position, embodying our invention, the middle or intermediate slidable section shown at the right hand side cfFi'g. l as carrying the mirror being in the construction presented in Fig. 9 utilized as the compartment for-the face-powder, while the mirror is located within the topof the, box in lieu of the face-powder compartment being formed in thetop member of the box as in the form of the invention shown in Figs. lto 8' inclusive;
Fig. lOis a vertical section through the box orcase presented in- F ig. 9, the section 6 is a vertical transverse section b'eing on the dotted line 1010 of F ig'. 9;
Fig. 11 is a top plan view of a portion portion of the same taken onthe of the box or case shown in l ig. 10, the middle or slidable member for the ittitJ-POWClOl being omitted and the legs connected therewith being in section;
Jig. 12 is a vertical section, on a larger scale, taken on the dotted line 12-12 of Fig. 10, and
Fig. 13 is a perspective view of the lipstick holder detached from the box or case.
In the drawings, referring to Figs. 1 to 8 inclusive, showing one form of our invention, denotes the bottom or body member of the box or case, 21 the cover member thereof, and 22 an intermediate slidable member carrying therein a mirror 23. The members 20, 21 and 22 are circular in outline, as shown, and whenin closed position take the relation to one another shown in Figs. 1 and The members 20, 21 are connected together by a hinge 24 which permits the member 21 to be closed upon the body member 20 or turned from over the same. i
The body-member 20 is formed with an annular vertical rim 25 which, near its upper edge, is offset inwardly to form an outer annular shoulder 26 on which the edge of the skirt 2'? of the cover-member 21 may seat when the box is closed and an inner annular shoulder 28 which we utilize as means for retaining within the body member 20, a diskplate or frame 29 which we press below said shoulder 28 and which has upwardly extending yielding segmental sections 30 which snap below said shoulder 28 and cooperate therewith in securely posi tioning the plate or frame29 with the body or bottom member 20 of the box.
. The plate or frame 29 has eccentrically .fin ers Fi 7 which are messed slightb t?) l lyinwardly and serve as means for gripping the base of the compact and holdii'ig the compact-in stationary position. Around the upper edge of the compartment 32 the metal of the plate 29 and flange 31 is formed into anupwardly projecting annular head 36., which. serves to stiffen the plate 29 and deepen the compartment 32 and also rest and support for the intermediate sl able section 22 of the 2; when the box is opened to the extent shown in i ig. 2 and also when the box is entirely closed, as shown in Fig. 5.
The plate or frame 29 is below the upper edge of the body-member 20, and above said plate or frame and within the upper end of said body-memberis formed achamber 29, as at 39,and preventthe separation of the member 22 from the plate 29, and said legs are of such length. that when the mem ber 22 is slid outwardly on the upper edge of the body-member 20 the bent-ends 39 tit) thereof will engage the bottom of the plate v 29 and firmly hold the member 22 on said edge of the body-member and parallel therewith, as shown in Figs. t and 6, thereby preventing the outer portion of said member 22 which projects beyond. the member 20 from tilting downwardly, this result, being very desirable. When the slidable member 22 is slid inwardly along the upper edge of the body-member 20, said member will finally become concentric with the member 20 and settle down into the upper end there of and seat upon the heading 36 of the plate 29, the legs '33 then descending through the slots 37. The mirror 23 and member 22 will remain within the body-member 20, in the position shown in 2, except when it desired to'eXpose the rouge compartment 32. and when the use of the rouge is requiret, the lip 410 at the outer edge of the mirror will be taken hold of as a thumb-hold and the edge of the-member 22 thereat lifted from the body-member 20 and said member 22 wi l thereupon be slid outwardly along the upper edge of said member 20 to the. position shown in Flgs. 3 and 4. When the use of the rouge has ceased. the member 22 will be slid back to its initial position withi the body-member 20.
The cover-member 21 of the box provides within it a compartment for a face-powder compact 4L1 and a puff or pad 42 for use therewith and said cmnpartnient becomes exposed by the mere opening of said covermember, the mirror 3 then being in. tonvenient position for use, as shown in 2.
he box or case o'i our inventionthus comprises a body or bottom member, a cover member hinged thereto and. an intermediate slidable member, said slidable member being devoid of pivoted links and the like and adapted to firmly restupon the upper edge of the member which normally houses it and from which it is slid. In the form of the invention shown in Figs. 1 to 8inclusive, the
slidable member 22 carries a mirror, the facepowder compact is within the cover-member- 2i. and the rouge iii-the. bottom member 20.
ill)
lit)
Vi e find it entirely convenient however to so fashion and connect the. parts of our vanity box or case, that the cover member shall carrv thefmirror. and; that the intermediate slidable section shall'carry the facetion to form an outer annular shoulder 51 Iii) to serve as a seat for the skirt of the cover 44 and an inner annular shoulder 52. to hold downa disk plate or frame which performs the duties hereinbefore described of the disk-plate or frame 29 of Fig. i. The plate or frame53 is flanged downwardly at 54 to form a compartment 55 for a rougecompact 56 and its puff or pad 57, the com partment 55 corresponding with the compartment 32 of Figs. a and 5. The disk plate or frame 53 has parallel slots 58 to receive and guide the legs 59 slit and bent downwardly from the bottom of the slidable member 46 and the lower ends of which legs are bent laterally, as at 60, to prevent the separation of the member 46 from the plate or frame 53. The slots 58 and legs 59 correspond with the slots 37 and legs 38 of Figs. 6 and 7, and the slidable member 46 has the same operation as the slidable member 29. of
Fig. 4 but in this instance carries a powder compact instead of a mirror.
When the cover-member 44L is opened the mirror l9 and face-powder compartment are exposed, and when it is desired to use the rouge the outer edge of the slidable member i6 is lifted from the body-member 43 and said member 46 is then slid outwardly upon the upper edge of the rim O ofsaid member 43, the rouge, face-powder and mirror then all. being exposed.
The details of the case shown in Figs. 9 to 12 inclusive will be understood without further specific description in view of the descrigtion hereinbeforegiven with respect to Figs. 1 to 8 inclusive In the construction shown inv Figs. 9 to 11 inclusive, we form an opening 61 in the body rim at the front er the box to admit a lip-stick holder 62, and we slit and turn downwardly from the plate 53 oppositely disposed lips 63 to engage, guide and position said holder 62,as will be understood on reference to Figs. 11 and 12. The bottom of the box is slotted, as at 64, to receive the stem of the button 65 of the usual slide within the holder 62. With the addition of the lip-stick holder, the vanity case seems to be as complete, as ordinary requirements would render necessary. a i
