Description

Patented Apr. 10, 1934 DESK Arthur J. Lehman, Chicago, Ill., assgnor to The Lehman Company of America, Incorporated, Cannelton, Ind., a corporation of Indiana Application June 5, 1933, Serial No. 674,293
3 Claims.
not only the appearance and all the features of a regulation desk but in addition may be used as a blackboard.
A number of attempts have been made in the past to produce a desk construction which is adapted to include among its parts a blackboard. These devices, however, have been generally cumbersome and unsightly, while the desks constructed in accordance with the present invention are pleasing in appearance, convenient in operation and easily manufactured.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing. It is to be understood, however, that the drawing is illustrative only and not to be construed as unnecessarily limiting the scope of the protection sought and defined in the appended claims.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view showing the desk open and in position for use as a writing desk;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the desk closed and in position for use as a blackboard;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3--3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a sectional View taken on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 2.
The body of the desk is indicated by the reference numeral 11 to which is hinged in the usual manner the top 12 by means of hinges 13. The outer edge of the top 12 is provided with two recesses 14 in which are placed tacks 15 or other similar means for securing the straps 16. The purpose of the fastening means 15 is to provide a pivot for the straps 16. The straps 16 may be either of metal or fabric although preferably of a flexible material.
A combination blotting pad and blackboard 17 is attached at its upper edges to the straps or hinging members 16. The bottom edge of the member 17 is provided with an eyelet or other fastening member 18 which cooperates with a fastening device 19 secured to the top 12 to hold the member 17 securely to the inside face of the top 12 when it is so positioned.
The member 17 may be constructed of any suitable material Which is adapted to have one face coated with black so that it may be used as a blackboard and the other face covered with fab-- 5 ric or otherwise decorated to present an attractive appearance.
The face which serves as a blotting pad is provided with corner members 20 of the usual construction which are adapted to receive the corners of ordinary blotting paper generally used in desk pads.
It will be apparent from the foregoing description that when the desk is open, as shown in Fig. 1, the member 17 serves as a blotting pad and the desk has the appearance of an ordinary writing desk and that merely by swinging the member 17 over the top 12 to the outside face thereof, as shown in Fig. 2, the black side of the member 17 faces outwardly making a very convenient and neat appearing blackboard.
When it is not desired to use the desk in its closed position as a blackboard, the member 17 is held in place by the fastener 18 and the desk closed in the usual manner, in which position to all appearances it has the usual form of a desk, the fastening member 18 stopping the pad from swinging inside the desk and assuring that the blotting pad will be in proper position when the desk is opened.
I claim:
1. In a desk having a hinged top, a member pivotally mounted to the free edge of said top and adapted to be positioned on either side thereof, one face of said member being in the form of a blackboard.
2. In a desk, a swinging top for said desk, a member having on one face thereof a blackboard and on the other face a blotting pad, means for pivotally mounting said member to said top so that when said top is open the face of said member in the form of a blotting pad is in writing position on said desk.
3. A desk, a top member hingedly mounted on said desk, a member having on one face thereof a blackboard and on the other face a blotting pad, means for pivotally mounting said last mentioned member at the free edge of said top so that said member may be rotated thereabout and means for fastening said member on the inside face of said top.
ARTHUR J. LEHMAN.
