12 Claims. (Cl. 132-837) This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in vanity cases.

The primary object of the invention is to pro-` vide a vanity case having a hinged cover with a powder compartment in the case adapted to be covered and closed by a hinged mirror within the case with means forming a connection between the hinged mirror and hinged cover to effect shifting movement of the mirror to a position ready for use when the cover of the case is open.

A further object of the invention is to provide a vanity case of the foregoing character wherein the connecting means between the hinged mirror and hinged cover in the vanity case is in the form of a leaf spring that is adapted to be placed under tension when the cover is closed to cause the mirror to seal the powder compartment when the case is out of use to prevent the escape of powder from the compartment.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a vanity case embodying a frame structure including powder and rouge compartments with the casing comprising a bottom wall and a hinged cover detachably engaged with the frame structure and attached thereto without the use of pins, screws or other fastening devices with the idea of lessening the cost of manufacture.

With the above and other objects in View that will become apparent as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawing and claimed.

Referring more in detail to the accompanying drawing, the vanity case is of relatively thin construction and substantially elliptical in side ele- ,5 vation, comprises a frame having side bars I 0 and connecting end bars II and I2. that vare set slightly inwardly of the sides and ends of the side bars Il) with the outer sides of the connecting end bars II and I2 inclined upwardly as at I3 and I4 10 respectively. The opening afforded by the side bars I0 and connecting end bars I I and I2 accommodates the mounting of the open topped powder receptacle I5 disposed adjacent 'the end connecting bar I I and the paste rouge receptacle 15 I5 disposed adjacent the end connecting bar I2. The receptacle I 6 is provided With a hinged cover I'I opening transversely of the vanity case. A mirror I 8 is hinged as at I9 adjacent the end connecting bar I2 and is adapted to overlie the 20 cover II of the paste rouge receptacle- I6 and the open topped powder receptacle I5 to provide a closure for the powder receptacle.

The enclosing casing of the vanity case is shown in detail in Figure '7 and comprises a bottom wall 25 20 and a topY wall or cover 2| hinged tothe bottom wall as at 22. 'Ihe enclosingcasing that is of a thickness comparable with the insetting of the end connecting bars II and I2 so as to lie substantially ush with the side bars I0 of the vanity case. 'I'he bottom wall 20 and hinge cover 2| of the enclosing casing are of elliptical formation ,and the free edge of the bottom wall 20 is flanged as at 23 for engagement with -the upwardly inclined edge I3 of the end connecting bar II. The enclosing casing is inherently resilient and when the ilange 23 is engaged with the end connecting bar II as stated, the hinged connection 22 between the bottom wall 20 and cover 2| of the enclosing casing stops over the outer end of the end connecting bar I2 for engagement with the inclined side edge I4 thereof, and cooperates with ange 23 for retaining the enclosing casing on the frame structure of the vanity case. The free edge of the hinged vcover 2I carries a spring clip 24 that is adapted to be extended over the flanged end 23 of the bottom wall 2D as illustrated in Figures 1, 2 and '7 for retaining the inclosing casing in closed condition.

An arched leaf spring 25 is anchored at one end 50 as at 26 to the upper side of the mirror I8 adjacent its free swinging end, the arched leaf spring 25 being directed toward the hinged cover 2| and extends through a guide loop 21 depending from the cover intermediate its ends.l Itwill be 55 readily understood that when the hinged cover 2| is moved to an open position as illustrated in Figures 3 and 5, the mirror I8 is automatically `raised to its operative position for use and at the desired angle. When the cover 2l is closed, the mirror I8 is simultaneously moved to its closed position overlying the powder receptacle l5 andv pressure is exerted by the cover 2l on the arched leaf spring 25 to effect a tight connection between the mirror I8 and powder receptacle to prevent the escape of powder when the vanity case is out of use,

From the above detailed description of the invention, it is believed that the construction and operation thereof will at once be apparent, and while there is herein shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.

I claim:-

l. In a vanity case, a bottom wall and a hinged cover, a powder receptacle in the case, a hinged mirror in the case adapted to form a closure for the powder receptacle, and a resilient connection between the cover and mirror to effect tight closure of the mirror on the powder receptacle and elevation of the mirror to a position for use upon opening movement of the cover.

2. In a vanity case, a bottom wall and a hinged cover, a powder receptacle in the case, and a hinged mirror in the case adapted to form a closure for the powder receptacle, a leaf spring anchored to the upper side of the mirror, a slide connection between the mirror and cover whereby the mirror is raised to a position for use when the cover is opened and the spring being arched outwardly of the mirror for compressive contact by the cover to effect tight closure of the mirror on the powder receptacle.

3. In a vanity case, a bottom wall and a hinged cover, a powder receptacle in the case, a hinged mirror in the case adapted to form a closure for the powder receptacle, the case including a frame structure-having side and end bars, the opposite ends of the bottom wall being `clampingly engaged with the end bars and separable from the frame structure and a spring clip on the free end of the cover for overlapping clamping engagement with the free end of the bottom wall and adjacent end bar.

In a vanity case, a bottom wall and a hinged cover, a powder receptacle in the case, a hinged mirror in the case adapted to form a closure for the powder receptacle, and operatively associated with the cover whereby the same is raised to a position for use upon opening movement of the cover, the case including a frame structure having side and end bars, the opposite ends of the bottom wall being clampingly engaged with the end bars and separable from the frame structure and a spring clip on the free end of the cover for overlapping clamping engagement with the free end of the bottom wall and adjacent end bar.

In a vanity case, a bottom wall and a hinged cover, a powder receptacle in the case, a hinged mirror in the case adapted to form a closure for the powder receptacle, and a resilient connection between the cover and mirror to effect tight closure of the mirror on the powder receptacle and elevation of the mirror to a position for use upon opening movement of the cover, the case including a frame structure having side and end bars, the opposite ends of the bottom wall being clampingly engaged with the end bars and separable from the frame structure and a spring clip on the free end of the cover for overlapping clamping engagement with the free end of the bottom wall and adjacent end bar. 5

In a vanity case, a bottom wall and a hinged cover, a powder receptacle in the case, and a hinged mirror in the case adapted to form a closure for the powder receptacle, a leaf spring anchored to the upper side of the mirror, a slide 10 connection between the mirror and cover whereby the mirror is raised to a position for use when the cover is opened and the spring being arched outwardly of the mirror for compressive contact by the cover to effect tight closure of the mirror 15 on the powder receptacleythe case including a frame structure having side and end bars, the opposite ends of the bottom wall being clampingly engaged with the end bars and separable from the frame structure and a spring clip on the free end of the cover for overlapping clamping engagement with the free end of the bottom wall and adjacent end bar.

'7. In a vanity case, a bottom wall and a hinged cover, a powder receptacle in the case, a hinged 25 mirror in the case adapted to form a closure for the powder receptacle, the casing including a frame structure having side and end bars, with the end walls set inwardly of the side bars and forming a support for the powder receptacle, the to opposite ends of the bottom wall being clampingly engaged with the end bars and separable from the frame structure and a spring clip on the free end of the4 cover for overlapping clamping engagement with the free end of the bottom wall and adjacent end bar.

8. In a vanity case, a bottom wall and a hinged cover, a powder receptacle in the case, a hinged mirror in the case adapted to form a closure for the powder receptacle, and operatively associated 40'j with the cover whereby the same is raised to a position for use upon opening movement of the cover, the case includingv a frame structure having side and end bars, with the end walls set inwardly of the side bars and forming a support for the powder receptacle, the opposite ends of the bottom wall being clampingly engaged with the end bars and separable from the frame structure and a spring clip on the free end of the cover for overlapping clamping engagement with the 50 fbree end of the bottom wall and adjacent end 9. 10. 11. In a device of the character described, a case including a frame structure having side and end bars, a bottom wall and a hinged cover mounted on the frame structure, the opposite ends of the bottom wall being overlappingly engaged with the end bars and sep-arable from the frame structure and a spring clip on the free end of the cover for overlapping clamping engagement with the free end of the bottom wall and adjacent end bar.

In a device of the character described, a case including a frame structure having side and end bars, a bottom wall and a. hinged cover mounted on the frame structure, with the end Walls set inwardly of the side Walls, the opposite ends of the bottom wall being overlappingly engaged with the end bars and separable from the frame structure and a spring clip on the free end of the cover for overlapping clamping engagement with the free end of the bottom wall 15 and adjacent end bar.
