FILING CABINET Frank E. Zebrowski, New York, N. Y.
Application April 5, 1948, Serial No. 18,992
1 claim. l
"his invention relates to new and useful improvements and structural refinements in filing cabinets, more specifically, file boxes or holders such as are commonly employed for ling cards, and the principal object of the invention is to facilitate convenient access to the cards, immediately upon opening the cover of the cabinet.
This object is achieved by providing in the cabinet what may be referred to as a false bottom and also providing a exible connection between the bottom and the cabinet cover, so that the bottom assumes an inclined position as soon as the cover is opened, thereby exposing the cards to convenient access.
An important feature of the invention lies in its simplicity of construction, convenience in operation, and in its adaptability to economical manufacture.
With the above more important objects and features in view and such other objects and features as may become apparent as this specification proceeds, the invention consists essentially of the arrangement and construction of parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a transverse cross sectional view of the invention in its closed position;
Figure 2 is a cross sectional View, similar to that shown in Figure 1, but illustrating the invention in its open position;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary rear elevational view of the subject shown in Figure 1, and
Figure 4 is a perspective view of a false bottom, back panel and a flexible strap used in the invention, the receptacle and cover of the cabinet being illustrated in phantom lines.
Like characters of reference are employed to designate like parts in the specification and throughout the several views.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, the invention consists of a filing cabinet designated generally by the reference character I0, the same embodying in its construction a receptacle I2 and a cover I4, these being of more-or-less conventional type and preferably being formed with inclined, abutting edges I6, I8 respectively, as will be clearly apparent.
It is to be noted that the receptacle I2 includes a back wall formed in the upper end portion thereof with a pair of open recesses 22, while the (Cl. 20G-45.18)
cover I4 is provided with a pair of downwardly projecting tongues 24 which are receivable in the recesses 22 when the cover is in its closed position.
Suitable hinges 26, provided on the tongues 24 are employed for openably attaching the cover to the receptacle I2, substantially as shown.
The essence of novelty in the invention resides in the provision of a movable bottom plate or a false bottom 26 which freely and movably rests upon the actual bottom 28 of the receptacle I2 and the rear edge thereof is hingedly connected as at 30 to an upstanding back panel 32, as is best shown in Figure 4.
The back panel is disposed immediately adjacent the inner surface of the aforementioned back wall 20 of the receptacle I2, and a strap 34 of suitable flexible material is secured to the panel 32 as at 36 and to the cover I4 as at 38.
When the invention is placed in use, filing cards 40 may be positioned in the cabinet as illustrated in Figure 1, and when the cover I4 is in its closed position, the upper edges of the cards will be horizontally aligned.
However, upon opening of the cover I4 to the position shown in Figure 2, the strap 34 and the panel 32 will raise the false bottom plate 26 to a rearwardly inclined position, so that the upper edge portions of the cards 4I) will assume a rearwardly ascending formation, rendering them immediately accessible to the user.
Needless to say, the false bottom 26 will be lowered and the cards 40`will become horizontally aligned immediately upon closing of the cover I4.
It is believed that the advantages and use of the invention will be clearly apparent from the foregoing disclosure and accordingly, further description thereof at this point is deemed unnecessary.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
In a ling cabinet, the combination of a receptacle including a bottom wall and an upstanding back wall having an upper edge 'portion provided with a plurality of spaced notches, a cover provided on said receptacle and including a plurality of projecting tongues receivable in the respective notches, hinges at the outer ends of said tongues connecting the same to the notched portions of said back wall at points spaced downwardly from the upper edge of the latter whereby said cover may be swung upwardly and rearwardly from said receptacle, a bottom panel movably positioned on said bottom wall, an upstanding back panel slidable vertically on the inner surface of said back wall and having its lower edge hingedly connected to the rear edge of said bottom panel, and a ex ible element connecting ksaid back Vpanel to said 15 15029:096
cover, said flexible element being slidable over the upper edge of said back wall. whereby the back panel may be slid vertically on the back wall and the bottom panel raised to a rearwardly inclined position on said bottom wall by the opening of said cover.
