Description

COMBINED CIGARETTE CASE AND LIGHTER Filed March 19, 1954 I rwerzt'or 11 Z. S-WnderaOIM Patented July 31, 1934- f1 1,968,332 COMBINED CIGARETTE CASE AND LIGHTER Enar S. Anderson, Attleboro Falls, Mass, assignor to Evans Case Company, North Attleboro, Mass, a corporation of Massachusetts Application March 19, 1934, Serial No. 716,393
3 Claims. (Cl. 206-4141) adjacent the member 10 extends somewhat more than half the distance between the members 10 and 15 when closed as illustrated in Fig. so that the curved edges 11 and 16 substantially touch each other and are in alignment so that they form a substantially smooth outer surface. It will be noted that the member 15 is hung on the pintle 21 at a line somewhat removed from the edge of the curved side 16. This gives it an eccentric movement so that the curved edge 11 acts as a stop for the opening movement as illustrated in Fig. 4 where the curved surface 16 has come to rest in contact with the edge of the curved side 11.
Extending inward on the edge 16 are stops 22 which when the device is closed engage a catch member 23 mounted on a spring 24 in the edge of the curved side 11 on the opposite side of the member 10. As illustrated especially in Fig. 5 the catch member 23 is arranged entirely within the curve of the associated sides 11 and 16 so as to present a substantially smooth surface. It will be observed that as illustrated the end members 12 are attached to and carried by the member and they are provided with seats 25 against which may rest the inner sides of the unobstructed ends 17 of the member 15. This provides a neat, attractive relatively smooth, closure end and allows the adjacent end member 12 to act as a closure or cover for the lighter 18 when the device is closed and at the same time allows the removal of the closure 12 so as to make the upper operative portion of the lighter l8 entirely free and exposed when the device is opened into the position shown in Fig. 1. It may be convenient if the end member 12 illustrated at the bottom of Fig. 1 and away from the lighter 18 is arranged on the member 10 but since there is no portion of the mechanism to be interfered with at this end of the device this is not so important and the closure at the lower end with the lower edge 1'7 might be of any other suitable well known construction. The lower end member 12 so arranged acts as a convenient seat or base for the cigarettes carried in the member 10.
Other details of the apparatus illustrated may be changed to suit the desires or purposes of one carrying out the invention without departing from the spirit thereof since the drawing is intended to illustrate only one form the invention may take.
I claim as my invention:
1. A combined cigarette case and lighter comprising a casing member having an unobstructed end, a lighter fixed within it at the unobstructed The invention relates particularly to a combined cigarette case and lighter which has within it space for carrying cigarettes and also a lighter so arranged that when the case is closed it pre- 5 sents a relatively smooth surface on all sides and completely encloses and protects not only the cigarettes but the entire lighter also.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a front view of the combined cigarette case and lighter open. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary transverse vertical section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a top plan view open as in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary transverse horizontal section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1. And Fig. 5 is a transverse horizontal section through the middle of the combined cigarette case and lighter in closed position.
In the drawing is illustrated a combined cigarette case and lighter made up of a member 10 provided with curved sides 11 and projecting end pieces 12. Associated with the member 10 for holding cigarettes therein is illustrated a conventional frame member 13 carried by the main hinge of the device by a conventional light spring 14. Supported between the end pieces 12 is a second member 15 which has curved sides 16 but is illustrated as having smooth flat ends 1'7. Arranged near one of the ends 1'7 is a conventional lighter 18. When the lighter is in inoperative position, as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3, all portions of it are below the adjacent edge 17 and if the device is closed may be completely covered as indicated in Fig. 2. When the device is open as illustrated in Fig. 1 the operating mechanism 19 is free to be operated and may if need be rise above the edge 1'7 which is clear, smooth and not overhanging. In as much as the edge 1'7 is not overhanging the flame which rises from the burner 20 meets no impedance and is free for access and use in the usual manner of lighters. Since there is no overhanging portion of the member 15 the flame will not impinge thereon but is free to rise above the edge 1'7. The end pieces 12 are perforated at about the center of their ends toward the member 15, the perforations being shown slightly further from the side attached to the member 10 than from their free sides. Mounted in the perforations and. running from one end member 12 to the other end member 12 is a rod 21 acting as a hinge pintle for carrying the member 15 and the frame member 13. The curved edge 11 of the member 10 on the side adjacent the member 15 extends from the member 10 somewhat less than one half the distance between the members 10 and 15 when closed as illustrated in Fig. 5. The curved edge 16 of the member 15 end, an igniter on the lighter at the end of the member, a second casing member hinged to the said member, and an end piece carried by the second member covering the igniter when closed and exposing it when open.
2. A combined cigarette case and lighter comprising a casing member having an unobstructed end, a lighter fixed within it at the unobstructed end, an igniter on the lighter at the end of the member, a second casing member, projecting end pieces on the second member, hinges at the centers of the end pieces on which the first member is supported, an extension of the first member beyond the hinges, a portion of the first member cut out to receive the extension so as to make a smooth fit when closed and to make a stop for the first member when open.
3. A container comprising a casing member, projecting end pieces on the member, a second casing member hinged to the centers of the end pieces, an extension of the second member beyond the hinge, a portion of the first member cut out to receive the extension so as to make a smooth fit when closed and to make a stop for the hinged member when open.
