SMOKING CASE Filed Aug. 19, 1929 INVENTOR firm/f M fa 0r ATTORNEY Patented Apr. 28, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE FRAN K M. EDGAR AND JOHN B. FLYNN, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNORS TO TERNSTEDT MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, A CORPORATION OF MICHIGAN SMOKING CASE Application filed August 19, 1929.
This invention relates to a smoking case. More particularly this invention contemplates a smoking case of the type having an outside casing forming a well for receiving a covered match box supported by the top of the case, the match box being arranged to automatically rise out of the said well upon the opening of the cover and to be automatically lowered into the well upon the closlng of the said cover.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of the smoking case.
Fig. 2 is a section along the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Figs. 3 and 4 are detail views of the internal spacing plate.
Fig. 5 is a detail elevation of the match box proper.
Fig. 6 is a detail View of the match box proper viewed from the side opposite to that of Fig. 5.
Fig. 7 is a section along the line 77 of Fig. 6.
Fig. 8 is a top plan view of the smoking case.
In the drawings, we have shown a smoking case which may be generally designated 1. The outside case consists of three separate parts; namely, the back plate 2, the unitary front and bottom plate 3, and the top plate or cover 4. The front plate has suitable openings 5 therein closed by trimming cloth 6 which matches with the trimming or upholstering cloth of the wall upon which the smoking case is arranged to be secured. The cloth 6, in conjunction with the openings 5, constitute decorative panels. The cloth is held tight against the front plate 3 by a suitable insert plate 7 which is preferably made of spring metal although any other type of metal insert may be used. The insert plate 7 has suitable end flanges 8.
For the purpose of maintaining the center portion of the insert plate 7 flush against the Serial No. 386,757.
trimming cloth 6, a suitable spacer is provided. This spacer is T-shaped and consists of the lateral plate member 9 and of the longitudinal member 10. This spacer member is placed within the outside casing so that the plate 9 contacts with the insert 7 as at 11, and the longitudinal plate 10 fits across the rear of the casing and engages the flanges 8 ofthe spring insert 7.
In assembly, the back plate, unitary front and bottom plate 3, and the cover 4 are suitably secured together to form a receptacle. The rear plate or back 2 securely holds the T-shaped spacer in position and this in turn serves to hold the insert 7 flush against the panel cloth and maintain the cloth in a smooth condition. I
The top 4 of the outside casing has an opening 15 which is arranged to receive the receptacle 16 which receptacle depends from the cover 4 and projects downwardly within the outer casing. The cover 4 also has an opening 17 which is arranged to receive a match box which may be generally designated 18. Depending from the cover 4 and surroundingthe opening 17 on all sides is the bottomless casing 19. The upper end of this casing is provided with the flanges 20 which are secured to the under side of the cover et by soldering or any other: suitable manner. This casing 19 in conjunction with the opening 17 of the cover 4 forms a well which is arranged to slidablyreceive a match box holder 21.-
Out of the narrow side of the casing is struck a suitable lug 23 which has pivoted thereto as at 24 the roughly L-shaped link 25. The casing 19 is provided with arcuate slots 26 concentric with the pivot point 24. The slidable match box 21 is provided with the horizontal slots 27. The L-link is soldered or otherwise suitably secured to cover 30. Opposite the arm 25 and soldered or otherwise suitably secured to the cover 30 is the arm 31. The arms 25 and 31 each carry a headed lug 32 which lugs slidably engage the casing 19 in the arcuate slots 26 and the box 21 in the horizontal slots 27. The cover 30 has secured thereto a suitable knob 83.
Fig. 5 shows the position of the match box when in lowered or closed position. Fig. 6 shows the match box in raised position. It is obvious that when the knob 33 is grasped to raise the cover 30, it pivots at 24 since the cover is carried by the arm 25; that the lugs 32 will move horizontally in the slots 27 and will move arcuately in the slots 26 which causes the box 21 to rise within the casing 19. W hen the knob 33 is grasped to close the cover 30 the reverse of this movement takes place and the box is lowered into the well provided by the casing 19.
It is understood that the box 21, although preferably arranged to receive a match box, may equally well be used for cigarettes or matches directly without a box for the same, and this may be done without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What we claim is:
1. A receptacle comprising a main casing having a well formed therein, a container removably positioned in said well, a cover for the well, and means pivoted within the main casing and fixed to, and supporting the cover and connecting the cover and the said container whereby the container is moved outwardly when the cover is pivoted to opened position.
2. A receptacle comprising a main casing having a well with a slotted wall formed therein, a container having a slotted wall movably positioned in the said well, a cover for the said well, a link fixed to the said cover and arranged to slidably engage the well and the container in the saidslots to move the said container when the cover is moved to opened or closed position.
3. A receptacle comprising a main casing having a well with an arcuately slotted wall, a container having a horizontally slotted wall movably positioned in the said well, a cover for the said well, a pivotal link for supporting the said cover and for engaging the said well and the said container in the said slots to move the said container when the cover is pivoted to opened or closed position.
4. A receptacle comprising a main casing having a. well with an arcuately slotted wall, a container having a horizontally slotted wall movably positioned in the said well, a cover for the said well, a pivotal link for support-
