The principal object of the -invention is the provision of a device of the indicated character, which embodies novel features, to

the end that the device will be adaptedk for use upon the top of a table, desk or the like, loaded or filled with articles such as tobacco products, particularly cigarettes, which may be kept inclosed in the device, but which may be removed therefrom at the 'will of a person yby a simple manipulation, the cigarettes being brought to a position in which they will be conveniently accessible. v

Referring now more particularly to the drawings, it will be apparent that the device involves a two-part case or inclosing structure consisting of a hollow base part 10 and a cover 11. The part 1() consists of a base section 12 which constitutes the bottom or base of the part 10, and a section 13 of rectangular formation which provides a front wall 14, side walls 15 and a rear wall 16. The base section 12 may be made of any suitable material, either glass, Wood or composition material. In the present instance the base section 12 is made of glass. The base part 10 may rest on a flat top of a desk or als the like, and will be relatively immovable,

to the base section 12 and is secured thereto 1n any preferred manner such as by the use of cement or suitable fastening elements. The cover 1 1 is made of metal, either base metal or precious metal. The` cover 11 is hingedly connected with the rear wall 16 of the` section 13, and is therefore movable to opened and closed positions with respect to the base part 10. The hinge construction between the cover 11 and the rear wall 16 is designated 17, and is of the spring type designed and adapted to move the cover 11 automatically to the opened position. The hinge construction 17 is of well known form and consists ofy eyes on the cover 11, andeyes onthe upper Vedge of the rear wall 16. These eyes receive a piece of spring steel, which provides the necessary pintle on which the cover moves, but also a yieldable means constantly acts to move the cover 11 to the opened position.

A holder 18 is arranged on, or is connected with the cover 11 for movement with and with respect to said cover. f Accordingly the holder 18 is hingedly connected withthe cover 11' on the inside adjacent to or inV close proximity to the hinge 17, as indicated at 19. The hinge construction 19 between the holder 18 'and the cover 11 is; similar to the hinge construction 17 hereinabove described. The spring of the hinge 19 has anormal tendency vto move the holder 18 to an angular position with respect to the cover 11 when the latter isin the open position, as shown in Fig. 1, and allows the holder 18 to assume a position parallel to the inside face of the cover'11.v The holder 18 is made preferably of metal, and is designed and adapted to hold articles such as cigarettes designated 20, or any other article, in such a manner that they may be readily grasped to remove the same from the holder. The holder 18 is of a size to be received in the base part 10 when the cover 11 is in the closed position, as shown most clearly in Fig. 2. f

In order to releasably hold the cover `11 closed there is provided means presently to be described.L The ,front wall 14 ofthe section 13 has a flange 21 on theupper edge thereof whichy constitutes an abutment against which the free edge of the cover 11 100 be apparent that the cigarettes automatically engaged by closes. A latch member 23 is arranged between the iiange 21 and the strip 22, and is conlined therebetween by the front wall 14 and a plate 24 secured to the front wall 14 on the inside thereof. In this way the latch member 23 is mounted for sliding movement. The latch member 23. has a keeper 25 adapted to be engaged by an L-shaped projection 26 on the.

cover 1l, when the cover is in the closed position, to hold the cover in the closed position. The projection 26 is movable through a hole or slot 27 in the iiange 21. The latch member 23 is under the influence of a contractile spring 28 which has one end thereof connected with one end of the latch member 23, las at 29, and the opposite end thereof is connected with the strip 22 as at 30. The spring constitutes a yieidable means constantly acting on the latch member to move it to a position in 'which its keeper 25 may be engaged by the projection 26 on the cover 11, in the mov-ement of the latter to the closed position.

A roc-ker 31 is pivotally connected as at 32 with the latch member 23. This rocker 31 has a manipulating button 33, and a cam 34. One corner of the cover 11 is cut away, and the flange 21 is also cut away to allow the rocker end having the button 33 thereon to extend eXteriorly of the cover when the latter is in the closed position. The cam 34 is always in contact with a block 35 on the front wall 14 by the action of the spring 28. When the latch member is in the position shown in Fig. 3, it may be moved to disengage its keeper 25 fromr the projection 216, to allow the cover to be. moved to the opened position by the spring hingey 17, bjy manipulating or pressing down on the button 33- It will be apparent that by pressing down on the button 33, the cam 34 of the rocker will fulcrum on .the Vblock 3.5, lcausing the latch member 23 to move to the right against the action of the spring 28. The cover 11 will then fly open and carry with it the holder 18 which will assu-meanangular position with respect tothe cover 11 as shown in Fig. 1. In order to aordaccess to the latch meinber- 23 and the spring and rocker connected therewith, the plate 24 hereinbefore referred to is detachable, use being made of small screws 36 which extend through holes in the plate 24 and one of which is screwed into the block 35, and the other one of which is screwed into a similar block 37. The lower edge of the plate 24 closes against a strip or flange 38 formed integral with or secured to the front wall 14 ofthe section 13. The upper edge of the plate 24 closes against or abuts the flange 21.

It is to be understood that the invention is not restricted to the precise arrangement of parts shown and described, asdetails ofmember paralleling the abutment, movable endwise and adapt-ed to be engaged by said projection to hold said closure member closed against the abutment, yielding means connected with one end of the latch member to move said latch member to a position to be engaged by said projection as the closure member is moved to the closed position, and depressible means connected with the other end of said latch mem` ber which projects through said abutment and which also projects exteriorly of said closure member when the latter` is its closed position adapted to be manipulated to move said latch member to disengage it from said projection to allow the closure member to be moved to its opened position.
