0F GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN, A CORPORATION 0F CONTAINER.
Application led May The present invention relates to containers for such articles as matches, cigarettes and the like; and its object is to proved such a container improved in certain respects hereinafter appearing and particularly well adapted to be mounted in the walls of automobile bodies and doors.
'Ihis object is attained by, and the invention finds a preferable embodiment in, the structure hereinafter particularly described in the body of this specification and illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front face view of a container for matches, cigarettes or other small articles;A
Figure 2 is a rear View o the lower part y of the casing of the device;
Figure 3 is a rear-view of the container;
Figures 4 and 5 are central sectional views of the casing and container, taken on a vertical plane corresponding to lines 4 4 of Figures 1, 2 and 3, Figure 4 showing the container in. closed position and Figure 5 showing the same in open'position In the embodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawings, the device comprises casing 1 seated in an opening through the inner member 2 vof the wall of an automobiles body, and provided with a flange 8 whose edge abuts said wall member and conceals the openin into which the body of the casing extenfs. The rear wall 4 of this casing has a guide slot therethrough having a main lower portion 5 and an.- upward extension 6 whose upper end 7 forms a stop. The container 8 adapted to hold small articles such asamatch box, cigarettes, etc. has a front wall 9 swingably mounted on the casing as by the tongue 10 bent outwardly and engaging in the slot 11 in the bottom of the casings side wall. This container has also a bottom 12 and rear wall 13 which is slit to provide a member or tongue 14 bent rearwardly and forming a spring pressing ltoward the casings wall 4. This member or tongue 14 has, adjacent its lower end, aportion 15 which is inclined toward the casmgs rear wall and slidably bears in the main or wider portion 5 of the guide slot during the first part of the containers' opening movement or durinthe latter part of its closing movement. his tongue or member 14 has also a lower end l portion 16 28, 1925. Serial N0. 33,440.
It will be seen that in the containers opening movement the portion 15 of the spring mem'ber slidingly bearsin the lower .or cross-sectionally wider portion 5 of the guide slot, until the container has swung open far enough for said portion 15 to pass out of the portion 5 of the guide, whereupon the narrow end portion. 16 of this member 14 slidably bears in the narrow portion 6 of the guide slot until arrested by striking the end 7 of the slot The container is provided with a suitable handle 19.
The invention being intended to b'e pointed out in the claims, is not to be limited to or by details of construction of the particular embodiment thereof illustratedby the drawings or hereinbefore described.
claim:
1. In a device of the character described: a guide having a main portion and a crosssectionally restricted extension; a container having a swinging movement and provided with a member spring-pressed toward the guide and having a portion adapted to slidably bear in the guides main portion during a part of the containers movement, and a cross-sectionall restricted end portion adapted to sli ably bear in the said extension of the guide during another part of the movement of the container.
2. In a device of the character described: a guide having a main portion and a crosssectionally restricted extension; a container having a. swinging movement and provided with a member spring-pressed toward the guide and having a portion inclined toward the guide and adapted to slidably bear in the main portion of the guide during a part of the movement of the container, and a. cross-sectionally restricted end portion vadapted to slidably bear in said extension of the guide during another part of the movement of the container.
3. In a device of the character described:
a casing having a rear wall with a guide slot therethrough having a main portion and a comparatively narrow upward extension tenminating 1n a stop; a container swingably mounted adjacent its outer side and lower end on the casing and provided With -0 ment of the container to opening position,
and a cross-sectionally restricted end portion slidably bearing in said extension of the guide'during a subsequent part of the movement of the container to open position and holdingly engaged by the stop to limit `the opening movement of the container.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand at Grand Rapids, Michigan, this 19th day oi May, 1925.
