This invention has reference to weather strips and more particularly to that type of weather strips used at the bottoms of swinging closures or doors.
J; An important object of the invention is to provide a weather strip which will automatically move from its active position to its inactive position when the closure is swung to its open position, thereby reducing wear on the weather strip to the minimum.
A further object of the invention is to provide a weather strip of this character which may be readily and easily installed without the necessity of making extensive alterations in the door structure.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combina tion and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Figure 1 is an elevational view showing a closure in its open position, the cover plate of the device being partly broken away.
Figure 2 is an elevational view showing the position of the weather strip when the closure is in its closed position.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 1 is an enlarged detail view of the operating mechanism.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of another form of striking plate.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the reference character 5 indicates a swinging closure and the numeral 6 indicates a portion of the closure frame which also includes 7 the still 7 As shown, the inner front surface of the 45 closure is cut away as at 8 defining a housing for the weather strip and operating mecha nism forming the essence of the invention.
The weather strip is indicated by the reference character 9 and includes a substantially inverted U-shaped metallic member 9 that supports the strip of felt 10 that contacts with the sill 7 in providing an air-tight connection between the closure and sill.
Openings are formed in the metallic member 9 adjacent to the ends thereof, which openings receive the lower ends of the coiled springs 11, the upper ends of the coiled springs being connected with the brackets 12 as at 13, with the result that the coiled springs will normally tend to draw the member 9 and felt connected therewith, upwardly.
The reference character 14 designates cams which are pivotally supported adjacent to the ends of the member 9, the cams having their ends 15 contacting with the member 9, while the upper ends of the cams are pivotally7 connected with the operating bar 16 as at 1 The pivot connection 17 at one end of the bar 16 is in the form of a transversely disposed pin to which the plunger 18 is connected, the plunger being provided with a head 19 that extends through an opening formed in the plate 20 that closes one end of the cut out portion in the closure.
A wear plate 21 is secured within the closure frame 6, and is engaged by the plunger head 19 when the closure is moved to its closed position, which movement moves the bar 16 to a position as shown by Figure 2 of the drawing with the result that the member 9 and felt strip connected therewith are moved downwardly.
As shown by Figure 5 the wear plate or striking plate which is indicated by the numeral 22 may be provided with a groove I 23 to guide the head 19 to its proper position.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that when the closure equipped with a weather strip constructed in accordance with the invention, is moved to its open position, the weather strip will be moved to its inactive position or to a position within the housing of the closure in which it is positioned, due to the action of the coiled springs 11 which tend to draw the member 9 upwardly.
When the closure is moved to its closed position it will be obvious that the action of the bar 6, will move the member 9 and felt to their active positions, where the felt closely engages the sill 7.
A cover plate indicated at 22 is positioned over the housing to protect the mechanism against weather.
I claim:
In combination with a swinging closure having a recess formed along the lower edge thereof, a weather strip including a felt carrying member, coiled springs connected with the felt carrying member for'normally pulling the felt carrying member upwardly, cams having right angled ends contacting with the felt carrying member, laterally extended pins.
