en agement with the sill,
I 3 1,576,416 s'rrss PATENT OFFICE.
ALONZO E. DECKER, OF FREMONT, OHIG, ASSIGNOR 0F ONE-HALF TO FRANK P. SMITH, OE FREMONT, OHIO. I
WEA'EEER STRIP.
when the door is closed for excluding draft.
An important and more specific object is the provision of a weather-strip device of this character in which the strip may be either recessed into the door or mounted upon the side thereof, without recessing, the strip being normally spring pressed into inoperative or non-obstructing position and co-operating with an automatic spring pressed trip device whereby it will be positively forced into engagement with the door sill when the door is swung into closed position.
Another object is the provision of a device er this character which will be simple and inexpensive in manufacture, easy to apply or install, automatic in operation, efiicient and durable in service, and a general improvement in the art.
With the above and'other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists in the details of constructionto be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 isa vertical section throu h a door equipped with my device showin it in open position. and showing it ready or engagement with the automatic closing or trip device,
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the door in closed position and the weather strip in ig. 3 is a detail section through the easingKcontaining the trip mechanism.
eferring more particularly to the drawings, the letter A designates a door jamb', B represents thehingedly mounted door and C the sill therefor. The floor is indicated by the letter D.
. In carrying out the invention, I provide a strip 31 -mounted, by means of hinges 32,
Application filed December 29, 1924. Serial No. 758,739.
upon a strip 33 secured to the door B, the i The door jamb or frame A isprovided' with a recess 35 within which is located a casing 36 which encloses the trip mechanism which consists of an elongated 11111! 37 which is slidably mounted transversely through the casing 36 and guided by screws or the like 38 which pass through elongated slots 39 in the link. One of the screws 38 also passes through and serves to pivot a trip 40 which is engaged by a pair of leaf springs 41 and 42 mounted in any convenient manner as for example by being inserted within a slot 43. Adjustment of the tension may be obtained by means of a screw 44 which is adapted to engage the springs 42.
In the operation, it is apparent that when the door is open the strip 31 is held elevated by the spring means 34. When the door is c'osed, the strip 31 will engage against the trip 40 and the latter will exert a camming efi'ect which will swing the strip 31 downwardly against the resistance of the springs 34 until it engages the resilient strip element 17 carried by the sill. During this movement of the strip 31 it is evident that the trip 4:0 must move rearwardly against the resistance of the springs 41 and 422 so as not to obstruct the weather strip 31. During this movement the link '37 upon which the trip ll) is carried must slide transversely through the door. The movement iswell illustrated, and it is consequently *believed that further explanation will be unneoessary.
From the foregoing description and a study of the drawings it will be apparent that l have thus provided a simply constructed, inexpensive and easily installed device for the purpose specified which will efficiently perform all the functions for which it is intended and which on account of the fewness of the parts is not likely to get out of order.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention, it should be understood that I reserve the right to make such changes in the form, construction and arrangement of arts as will not depart from the spirit 0 the in vention or the scope of the sub-joined claims.
Having thus described the invention, I claim:
1. In combination with a door and its jamb, a weather strip hingedly mounted at the lower portion of the door, a leaf spring recessed into the door and of angular shape member pivoted on said slotted member and disposed in the pathv of travel of the strip."
2. In combination with a door and its sill and jamb, a weather strip hinged upon the lower portion of the door, means normally urging said strip upwardly away from the door sill, the jamb being recessed, ahorizontally disposed member located within the recess and formed with a longitudinal slot, a cover plate for the recess, a securing element passing through the cover plate and said slot for adjusting said elongated member toward or from the door, a pawl member pivotally mounted on the end of said elongated member nearest the door. and positioned in the path of travel of the strip,
spring means urging said pawl member to- I ward the door, and means for limiting swinging movement of the pawl member away from the door.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
ALONZO E. DECKER.
