Dec. 4 1923.
J. K. JOHNSON ATTACHMENT FOR wINDows Filed D607 l5. 1922 @Him new Patented Dee. 4, l923.
EJNITED SATES PATNT FFIQE.
JOI-IN K. JOHNSON, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO WILLIAM' K. REEVE, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
ATTACHMENT Application filedy December To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I,`JoHN K. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in an Attachment for Vindows, of which the following is a specification.
My said invention relates to an Vattachment for windows and it is an object of the same to provide a means which will prevent windows from rattling which commonly occurs where the window sash does not .tit closely in its casing.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part hereof and on which similar reference characters indicate similar parts,
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a window and its casing with parts broken away, 2li Figure 2 a vertical section on line 2 2 of Figure 1,
Figure 3 a detail on an enlarged scale,
Figure 4c a transverse section on line 4-4 vof Figure 3, v
'Figure 5, a front view of the lower end of the device as shown in Figure 3, and
Figure 6 a modification.
In the drawings reference character 10 indicates a window -frame which may be of any conventional form and in which there is located a lower sash 11 and an upper sash 12. The window frame is broken away at each side of the window sash to show slots 13 in guide strips 13 for the reception of anti-rattling devices. As shown in Figure 2 these devices are applied to both the upper and the lower sash, fthe window frame being cut away for this purpose.
My device is shown on a larger scale in Figures 3 and 1 where the slot 13 in a guide strip 13 is shown as adapted to receive a sheet metal backing and holding plate 14 having at its upper and lower ends, outstanding ears 15 and 2O bent'over the edges of a spring 16. The spring 16 has at its upper end. a hole to receive a tack, brad or the like 1T which also passes through a similar opening in the plate 14 and into the wood of the casing. The lower end of the spring 1n the position 'shown and then the springs is free to move between a pair of ears 520y FOR WINDOWS.

bear resiliently against the sash from one side to force it a ainst the guide strip at the other side. gSee Fig. 2.) The sash can be moved freely by a person opening or closing the window yet the springs prevent too free a movement of the sashin its slot. As will be seen from Figure 2 the springs are preferably placed at the inner side of one sash and at the outer side of the other so as not only to prevent rattling, but also to force the two sashes together at their meeting edges and thus assist in preventing ingress of cold air.
In the form shown in Figure 6 the spring 16 is located in a. plate 14 as above described, the plate in this instance being secured in a depression formed at the bottom of a side groove in a screen 18 which is movable on a pair of guide-strips 19 fitting in the grooves, `only one strip being shown. As will be evident a spring at each side of the screen will tend to keep the same centered between the guides thus enabling the screen. to be moved up and down readily and without sticking in the guides.
Other uses of my device and other forms of the same will suggest themselves to those skilled in the art and therefore I do not limit myself otherwise than as indicated in the appended claim..
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
An attachment for windows comprising a .flat spring', an elongated backing member therefor having at 'its upper and lower ends pairs of outstanding ears bent reversely upon themselves at their point of contact with the backing member to receive therebetween' the respective ends of the Hat spring, a tack passing through registering holes in thc spring and backing member to support one end of the attachment, and a tack passing through t'hc backing member, only to support the other end, the free end of the spring readily passing over the last said tack, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal at Washington, District of Columbia, this 13th day of December, A. D. nineteen hundred. and twenty-two.
