UNITED STATES PATENT 1 OFFICE.
EDWARD HEFFERNAN, OF GLADESVILLE, NEAR SYDNEY, NEW SOUTH WALES: AUS- ,TRALIA, ASSIGNOR TO DAVID O. YDUNG NARME, OF SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA.
STAY FOR CASEMENT \VINDOWS AND THE LIKE.
Application filed May 4, 1927, Serial No.
This invention relates to stays for casement windows and the like.
Referring to the accompanying drawings in which the invention is illustrated, Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the stay fitted to a window, the latter being in open position; Fig. 2 is a perspective detail view of parts of the stay shown separated; and Fig. is a longitudinal sectional view (partly in side elevation) of the stay.
The stay means comprise a bracket 1 which is attachable to a window 2 or the like the latter being hinged say at 3 to its frame a. Said bracket 1 is secured near the hinged side of the window 2 or the like and it is provided with a plate extension 5 havmg a nally screw-threaded. On the sill 7 of the frame 4 or on the head of the latter but longitudinally thereof is a slotted guide 8; this is secured to and may be disposed either at an angle to or in a straight line with said sill or head.
(Jo-operating with said plate extension 5 is an arcuately movable arm 9 one end of which has a plate extension 10 with an opening 11 therein to fit over the boss 6 on the bracket 1. In the plate extension 10 are a series of small pieces 12 of rubber or other friction material. At the other end of the arm 9 is a projection 13 adapted to enter a slot 14 in the guide 8 and to slidetherein.
Fitting over the extension plate 10 on the arm 9 is a disc plate 15 fitted with a lug 16 whose sides are adapted to seat against the sides of a groove 17 cut in the bracket 1. Such disc plate 15 is holed say at 18 to enable it to be positioned on the hollow boss 6.
An adjustable screw 19 fitting the said boss 6 serves to hold the disc plate 15 and the'said plate extensions 5 and 10 to each other, though permitting the plate extension 10 and the arm 9 to move arcuately,
hollow boss 6 thereon which is inter- 188,672, and. in Australia May 26, 1926.
whilst the disc plate 15 and the bracket'extension plate 5 remain stationary. justing the said screw 19 any desired pressure may be placed on the plate extension 10 whereby frictional resistance will be ore ated between the disc plate 15, the plate extension 5, and the plate extension 10 on the arm 9. Such frictional resistance enables the window 2 to be held in any opened position thereof.
The length of the guide 8 and the slot 14 therein and that of the arcuately movable arm 9 are suitably proportioned to each other to permit the projection 13 on the arm 9 to slide evenly and freely in the slot 14 in the guide 8. V
lVhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is Stay means for casement windows and the l1ke comprising a guide with slot therein adapted to be secured on the window or like frame, an arcuately movable arm with a projection fitting and slidable in said guide slot, an integral holed plate on said arm, frictional material embedded in the holes of said plate, a bracket attachable to the win dow or the like with a groove therein, a plate extension on said bracket with internally screw-threaded boss on said plate extension, a holed pressure plate with a lug adapted to fit the groove in the bracket, and an adj ustable pressure regulating screw passable through the holes in the plate on the arm and the pressure plate and engageable with said boss on the plate extension of the bracket when said plates are assembled so thatthe plate on the arm will be positioned between the plate extension of the bracket and the pressure plate, both the plate on the arm and the pressure plate fitting about the boss on the plate extension of the bracket.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
EDWARD HEFFERNAN.
