Specification of Letters Patent.

- To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, BERNARD D. HELLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window- Ventilators, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to new and useful improvements in a ventilator and more particularly to a window ventilator.

The primary object of the invention is the provision of a ventilator adapted to be connected to the window frame whereby the lower sash may be raisedand the air entering therebeneath directed upwardly.

A further object is the provision of guide members connected to the frame and a de-- struction and arrangement of parts which will be more clearly understood from the following description and drawing, in which,

In the drawings the numeral 1 indicates a window frame of ordinary construction and 2 the lower sash slidable therein.

My ventilator comprises guide members connected to the frame and a plate adapted to be received in the guide members. These guides comprise the plate 3 having a plurality of vertically spaced openings 4 and arms 5 extending at right anglestheret-o. Aspring plate is securedon the inner side of one of the arms 5 and comprises a flat portion 6 secured to the arms 5 by means of a rivet 7, an arched extension 8 and the curved portion 9 engaging the arm 5. While I have described one of the spring plates being attached to only one of the arms 5 it will be understood that a spring plate might equally as well be connected to each of the arms. A

plate 10, preferably of glass, extends across the window frame and has its ends engaged in the guides between the arms 5, and one face of the plate will be engaged by the springs, more particularly the arched portion 8, thereof. The curved portion 9 of the springs bearing against the plate 3 will allow the arched portion to be depressed when the plate is being inserted."

- Having fully described the detailed construction it is thought that the manner of using and the advantages will be clearly understood. As above stated one of the guide members is secured to each side of the windown frame and the glass l0 is inserted therein with the spring plates bearing against one face thereof. It will be noted that when the glass plate is in the guides the spring plates will hold it against rattling. With a ventilator, such as I have described, the lower sash of the window may be raised as high as the ventilator and the air which comes in beneath the sash will be directed upwardly and will not form a direct draft. At the same time dust enter- .ing beneath the sash will be blown against the ventilator and most of the same will lodge upon the window sill, and prevent it entering a room. v

Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A window ventilating device comprisln'g a pair of metallic strips bent into U shape in cross section and each having openings in its bight portion to receive retalning screws,the said strips being secured to the I sides of a window frame with their open sides toward each other, the arms of said strips being parallel, a leaf spring secured at one end in each strip upon one of the said arms near the top thereof, an outwardly bowed portion on each spring intermediate the ends thereof and extending toward the opposite arm, the free ends of said springs being rounded and resting upon the arm to which the spring is secured, and a plate con fined at its ends in the strips on the opposite sides of said .window frame and being engaged upon its inner face by said springs.
