Description
Feb. 21, 1950 c. R. RISNEY STORM SHIELD AND VENTILATOR FOR WINDOW SCREENS Filed July 25, 1947 gvwmwfm M f A f W mz'i/m Patented Feb. 21, 1950 OFFICE STORM SHIELD AND VENTILATOR FOR wmnowsoREENs Charles R. RisneyhChadwicks, N. Y. Application July 23. 1947, Serial No. 763,040 r j My invention relates to a storm shield and ventilator for window screens, and I declare the following to be a full, clear, concise and exact description thereof sulficient to enable anyone skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which like characters refer to like parts throughout. i The object of the invention is to provide a storm shield and ventilator for the frame of window screen, whereby the window 'can be-partially opened from the top without allowing the rain or other elements to enter the house, and can be opened from the bottom to avoid drafts through the house.
The object will be understood by referring to the drawings in which Fig. 1 shows a front view of an ordinary window screen frame with the storm shield and ventilator applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a detail enlarged view showing a perspective of a bracket employed in the device.
Fig. 3 is a detail enlarged View showing a perspective of a wedge employed in the device.
Fig. 4 is a detail enlarged view showing section taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the shield and ventilator embodies a plate glass 2 which is held in place in th window frame 5 by a pair of brackets 4, 4 which are attached to the inner surface of the frame 5 of the window screen 6. Each of the brackets 4 has sides 1 and 8. Side 1 is disposed at right angles to side 8. Its upper edge is rounded off at 9. A rest or support I!) of sides 1 and 8. The upper surface of support I is beveled or inclined downwards at I 1, whereby to prevent plate glass 2 from slipping thereoff. Support l0 extends the width of side 8 and about half the width of side 1, leaving a space at l2, whereby plate glass 2 can be slipped from below into position, when brackets 4, 4 are attached to the frame of the window screen.
Each of the brackets 4, 4 has a lug I5 formed integral with side 1 thereof. It extends outwardly therefrom parallel to and spaced from the inner surface of side 8, whereby to form a closure member to prevent the upper portion of glass 2 from falling outward from the brackets 4, 4. An aperture !6 is made in side i of bracket 4 for the projection of screw I! that is turned into the window frame 5, whereby to hold bracket 4 to frame 5. A felt padding 2!] covers the inside surface of side 8 of bracket 4 and the upper suris formed integral with the lower inner surface a 4 Claims. (Cl.'98 99) face of support I 0, whereby to present a soft sur- 2 face for the contiguous part of plate glass 2 to rest upon.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is as follows:
1. In a storm shield and ventilator for window screens, a screen frame, brackets mounted on said screen frame for holding a plate glass thereto, each of said brackets having two side walls formed at right angles to each other, a support perpendicular to said side walls formed at the lower end of said brackets, a lug extending outwardly from one of the side walls and parallel to and spaced from the other of said side walls, said lug located near the upper part of said walls, for holding the glass to said frame and said support leaving space, whereby to allow said glass to be inserted from above or below said brackets and a wedge disposed between said lug and said glass, whereby to hold said glass from rattling.
2. In a storm shield and ventilator for window screens, a frame, a bracket member consisting of two side walls formed at right angles to each other attached to said frame for holding a plate glass, a support perpendicular to said side walls and located at the lower part of said walls, said support extending across one of said sides of said brackets and partially across the other side thereof, whereby to allow a space for said plate glass to be slipped into position relative thereto from above or beneath, a lining disposed in said bracket on one of its sides to aid in holding said glass to said windowscreen, a lug extending outwardly from one of isaid side walls and parallel to and spaced from the other of said side walls, said lug located near the upper part of said walls, and a wedge disposed between said glass and lug, whereby to prevent said glass fro'm rattling.
3. In a storm shield and ventilator for window screens, a screen frame, brackets mounted on said screen frame for holding a plate of glass to said frame, each of said brackets consisting of two side walls formed at right angles-to each other, a support formed perpendicular to said side walls at the bottom part of saidbrackets, said support being beveled inward towards one of the sides of said bracket, a lug extendingoutwardly from one of said side walls and parallel to and spaced from the other of said side walls, and located near the upper part of said walls, whereby to allow said plate glass to be inserted from above or below into said bracket, a lining attached-to one of the sides of said brackets, whereby to present a soft surface for the contiguous part of said plate glass, and a wedge disposed between said lug and plate :lass, whereby to prevent said glass from rattling,
4. In a storm shield and ventilator for window screens, a frame, bracket members attached to said irame for holding a plate glass, each of said brackets consisting of two side walls formed at, right angles to each other, a supportin member perpendicular to said sidev walls and parallel to and spaced from the other of said side walls and formed integral and at the bottom part of said walls, its upper surface being inclined at an angle thereto, whereby to preventsaid glass from slipping thereoff, said supporting member extending the width of one of said sides and partially along the other side to leave an opening, whereby to CHARLES R.
