4 Claims; (Cl. 160F362) This invention relates to windowfrarne and-associated closures, including a, screen, construction, for. a wall structure and is a continuation-impartof our application for United States Letters PatentS'e'rial No. 364,744, filed April 3, .1953, now Patent No. 2,823,773, issuedFebruary 18, 1958, wherein one of the objects of the invention was to provide a window frame formed preferably of extruded parts to provide for the mounting on a support carried by the frame of a screen adjacent the outer side of the frame with a watershed above the support, and means for latching the screen to the frame and disposed in a lower portion of the screen.
Other objects are to provide support means to swingably support a screen from a window frame, including an extruded metal lintel, which lintel may be cut to length from an elongated strip of suitable metal having integral therewith the support means for cooperation with attaching means carried by the screen for swingably attaching the screen to the support means of the lintel; to provide attaching means carried by a screen for cooperation with support means carried by a lintel, which attaching means may be integral with the screen, as integral with the upper rail thereof, with the rail and attaching means being of extruded metal, or the upper rail of the screen being of conventional construction and the attaching means being attached thereto.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following detailed description of the invention, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this continuation-in-part application, and in which drawing:
Fig. 1 is an elevational view of the indoor-facing side of the frame and screen construction of this continuationin-part.
Fig. 2 is an elevational view of the outdoors facing side of the frame and screen construction.
Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view of the construction, substantially on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary horizontal transverse sectional view, substantially on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
In the drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of the invention as disclosed herein, the letter A designates generally a window frame, window and screen construction; B, the frame; C, the screen; and D, the window.
The frame B is preferably of extruded metal parts, cut to size from elongated extruded metal strips or lengths and includes a lintel above a screen opening 11. The lintel preferably has a substantially horizontally-extending wall or body portion 12, provided with watershed means 13 extending outwardly from a longitudinal edge portion 14 thereof. The means 13 preferably comprises a first flange 15 inclined from the vertical and preferably inclined downwardly from the longitudinal edge portion 14 and terminating in a downwardly-extending lip or lip flange 15.

Thescreen C includes a forarninous .panel 25,, as;.of{ screen wire, and a frame 26, including-an upper rail 27-, with the frame adapted toclose the opening 11. 'llhe; screen may be of conventional construction but provided with special attaching means 28 for swingably and removably attaching the screen C to the support means 17. The means 28 is shown, by way of example, as two spaced-apart upwardly-extending flanges 30, secured to the rail 27 as by securing means, such as the screws 31, to project upwardly from the rail 27. The flanges 30 are stepped intermediate their upper and lower edges to provide downwardly-facing shoulders 32 which are adapted to abut the upper edge of the rail 27 and, above the shoulders, the flanges 30 extend upwardly to finally engage, in face-to-face relationship, the outer face of the upwardly-extending terminal portion 20 and curve over, as at 33, the bead or hearing at the upper end of the terminal portion 20 and rest thereupon as a terminal portion-engaging member.
The length of the second flange 18 is such that its lower end portion provides a stop for face-to-face contact with the face of the rail 27 when the screen C is disposed vertically and entirely below the watershed means 13 including its flange 15. This tends to prevent drip of moisture upon the screen as well as upon both the means 17 and 28.
The space between the top of the rail 27 and the bottom of the third flange 19 is suflicient to enable the screen to be raised for the curved part 33 to clear the terminal portion 20.
The screen C may be releasably retained in a closed position by any suitable means, such as latches 35, comprising latch elements 36 pivotally carried by the stiles 37 of the screen frame 26 and for cooperation with slots 38 in the jambs 39 of the frame B.
In the example shown a ventilating window D is shown, facing the screen C and spaced therefrom. The window has a pane 40 so that light rays may pass through the foraminous panel 25 and through the pane 40 into a room or other enclosure. Preferably, the body portion 12 of the lintel 10 extends transversely of the frame B and is turned up to provide a flange 41 above the frame 42 of the window D.
The employment of conventional or stock screens C and use of the attaching means 28 eliminates the need for a specially provided (as a specially extruded metal) screen rail with attaching means continual therewith. In the structure herein disclosed the rail 27 need but be tapped to provide sockets for the screws 31 and a suitable number of attaching means 28 secured to the rail by use of the screws 31.

A window construction for a wall structure, said construction including a frame lintel provided with a longitudinal edge portion, watershed means comprising a flange inclined from the vertical and extending outward- 1y from said longitudinal edge portion, support means providing a pivotal support including a second flange, extending downwardly from said longitudinal edge portion, and a third flange extending outwardly from the intermediate portion of said second flange and provided with an upwardly-extending terminal portion, said third flange being overhung by said first flange; a screen frame eafness including an upper rail, and attaching means carried by said screen frame for swingably attaching said screen frame to said support means, including a fourth flange extending upwardly from said upper rail and terminating in a terminal portion-engaging member movably extending over and in contact with said terminal portion, with said upper rail in face-to-face contact with the lower portion of said second flange when said screen frame is substantially vertical and beneath said first flange.
3. A window construction in accordance with claim 2 characterized in that said screen frame has an upper rail of extruded metal and said attaching means is of extruded metal integral with said upper rail.
4. A window construction in accordance with claim 2 characterized in that means is provided to secure said attaching means to said upper rail of said screen frame.
