PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL I). T. MANNING, o PoRTsMoUTII, VIRGINIA.
WINDOW-SCREEN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 769,096, dated Augus 30, 1904.
Application filed July 30, 1993.
T (LZZ whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, SAMUEL DsT. MANNING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portsmouth, in the county of Norfolk and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window-Screens and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art towhich it appertains to make and use the same. i
My invention relates to window-screens.
It has for its object, among others, to provide a screen which can be readily adjusted in or removed from a window and also to prevent the tongue of the screen from sticking in the groove of the molding.
The invention consists in the combination and construction of parts hereinafter described, and more particularly pointed out in v the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention, Figure 1 is a front view of a part of a window- 'frame, showing my improved window-screen in position and the lower sash partly raised, a portion of the molding at the right-hand side being broken away, showing one of the springs, also a portion of the molding at the left-hand side beingbroken away, showing one of the short tongues. Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 00 w of Fig. 1, and Fig.
3 is a sectional view taken on the line y y'of Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a detailed broken view of a] portion of the screen-frame, showing the form of the spring and its mode of application to said frame.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 1 are the side pieces of the screenframe, the side piece 1 being provided with short sections of heading or tongues 2 and the side piece l preferably having a tongue 3 extending its entire length.
The side piece 1 has lateral cut-out portions 4 extending about centrally therethrough' and through the tongue 3, in which is housed the greater portion; of the springs 5. One
portion 6 of said springs, however, projects through and beyond the bead for engagement Serial lilo- 167,621. (No model.)
standing out from the tongue, as above de- I scribed, the extreme end being rebent and reentering the slot.
To place the screen in the window, the side carrying the springs is slipped into the groove in the molding, the springs being pressed in until they are level with the edge of the tongue. The short sections of beading or tongues on the other side are then slipped into their groove, the springs holding them in position. To remove the screen, the same operation is performed inversely.
' In securing the wire-cloth 8 to'the frame the edges are bent at an angle to the plane theretoand are secured to the frame preferably by strips 9, applied laterally around the interiorof the frame, the plane of the wire-cloth coinciding with that of the surface of the screen-frame next to the window. By means of this construction the wire-cloth will always be in close proximity to the lower bar 10 of the sash no matter at what position the window is left. 1 The objection to screens in which the wire-cloth is tacked on the inside or some distance within the outer surface of the frame is that if the window-sash is left at any point between the lower and upper cross-pieces of the screen-frame space is left between the lower cross-piece of the sash and the wire cloth through which flies or other insects may pass.
Latitude is allowed herein as to details, as they may be changed at will and the spirit of my invention remain intact and be protected.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a window-screen, the combination with a side piece having a tongue and provided with a lateral slot therethrough, of a spring projecting through said slot, said slot extended into the body of the side piece to permit the depression of the spring, said spring having both of its ends extended into said slot.
2. In a Window-screen the combination with a side piece of a screen-frame, having a tongue provided With a lateral slot therethrough extending through the side piece of a spring having both of its ends extending into said slot said spring projecting from said tongue.
3. In a Window-screen, the combination With a side piece of the screen-frame, having a tongue provided With a lateral slot therethrough of a spring anchored in said side piece and projecting through said tongue.
4. In a Window-screen, the combination With a side piece of a screen-frame, having a tongue provided With a lateral slot therethrough said slot extending through the side piece of a spring anchored in the slot in said side piece and projecting from the tongue.
5. In a windo\v-screen,a spring for engaging a guide-groove, having one end inserted into the side piece of the frame from the inside
