To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMIL BoMMEn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door Closers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to door closers and has for its primary object to provide a simple and inexpensive device including a part adapted to be adjustably positioned with relation to the door whereby resistance may be offered to the swinging movement of the door from its closed towards an open position, or on the other hand, the door may be permitted to swing freely without such resistance.
With the and other objects in View, I have illustrated one practical embodiment of my invention in the accompanying drawing which will be hereinafter more fully described and subsequently incorporated in the subjoined claims.

Figure 1 is a fragmentary elevation of a door and part of the door jamb with my device applied thereto;

Figure 3 is a fragmentary perspective View of the essential portion of the device;

Figure 5 is a transverse section taken on the line 55 of Figure 4; and
Figure 6 is a sectional view taken on the line 66 of Figure 5.

Upon the j amp o the bracket plate 7 is secured by screws 8, said bracket plate having horizontal outwardly projecting ears 9 and 10 respectively at its upper and lower ends. Between these ears the cylindrical barrel or housing 11 for a coil spring is arranged. Between the opposite ends of the cylindrical barrel 11 and the ears 9 and 10 respectively, the collars 12 and 13 are arranged, one end of the spring within the barrel being connected to the collar 12. 12 and 13 with the spring contained in said barrel is well known in the art of spring hinges, and therefore, need not befurther described. For the present explanation, it will suffice to state that the collar 12 has a laterally projecting arm 14 thereon, the lower side of which has a groove or channel 15 therein, the side walls of said channel being connected at their upper edges at the end of the arm as at 16. At the inner end of the channel the lower wall thereof provides a seat 17, the surface of said seat having a transverse groove or channel 18 out therein.
A rod 19 has each of its ends upset or enlarged as indicated at 20 and 20 respectively. When the rod is disposed in a horizontal position, one of its ends is seatedupon the seat 17 of the'arm 14 and the enlarge-- ment on the ends of the rod is engaged'in the groove 18 of said seat. As illustrated, I have shown the device mounted upon the left hand jamb of the door and therefore, the enlarged end 20 of the rod is engaged in said groove. When the rod is in its horizontal position, such enlargement prevents longitudinal movement ofthe rod upon its seat'and when the rod is disengaged from said seat, it is slidably moved with respect to the arm 14, the enlargement 20 engaging the one side of the arm to limit such sliding movement of the rod and sustain said rod in a pendant vertical position. When the bracket and collar 12 are arranged upon the right hand 'door jamb, they are inverted from the position shown in the drawing and in such case the other enlarged end 20 of the rod 19 serves to limit sliding movement of the rod to its vertical position and prevent disconnection of said rod from the arm.
Upon the face of the door 5, a roller 21 is mounted in a suitable bracket 22, said roller being peripherally grooved and the rod 19 when in a horizontal position, being held in this groove of the roller by the spring contained in the barrel 11, which spring is connected to the collar 12.
From the above description, it will be readily seen that when the rod 19 is disposed asshown in Figure 1 of thedrawings so that it bears against the grooved roller 21 and the end thereof is lockedin connection with the arm 14 on the collar 12, when the door 5 is swung towards an open position, the roller 21 will ride along the rod as said rod is swung laterally with the door. In combination. a bracket and a spring held collar rotatably mounted in one end ofsa-id bracket, said bracket and collar being invertible for arrangement upon either a right or left hand door jamb, said collar having a laterally projecting arm thereon, a rod slidably and permanently connected with said arm and having: an enlargement formed on each of its ends, said arm having a seat upon which one endof said rod is adapted to be engaged and a groove formed in said seat to receive the enlargementon one end of the rod :when saidjrod is disposed in a horizontal position, said rod when disengaged from said seat being: slidable with respect to said arm and the enlarge ment on one end of said rod coacting with the arm to prevent disconnection of the rod therefrom and sustain said rod in a pendent vertical position, and a roller adapted to be mounted on the face of a door to engage said rod when the rod is horizontally positioned with respect to said arm.

In combination, a spring, a member held thereby and adapted for movement in a horizontal plane against the resilient action of the spring, a lateral projection extending from said member, an arm carried by said projection with one or the first end engaging the projection and its other or second end hanging downwardly therefrom, and means for holding said arm in said pr0 jection so as to project laterally thereof by positioning the arm therein with the said second end thereof engaging said projection and its first end extending laterally outward therefrom.

In combination, a spring, a member held thereby and adapted for movement in a horizontal plane against the action of the 1 spring, a laterally projecting arm formed with a longitudinal channel having a recess providing a socket in the inner end thereof, a rod provided with an enlarged head on one end and adapted for engagement upon said socket when said rod is disposed in a horizontal position and adapted to be moved from said horizontal position to a vertical position and the enlarged head on the end of the rod engaging the upper side of said channel arm to sustain the rod in such vertioal position.
6. In combination, a spring, a member -held thereby and adapted for movement in a horizontal plane against the resilient action of the spring, a lateral projection extending from said member, an arm slidingly carried in said extension adapted to extend horizontally therefrom and to slide therein so that either of its ends will engage said extension and means on the ends of the arm to prevent its removal from said extension.
