Be it known that I, ANDREW SCHUEHLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Controlling Devices for Casement Windows and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a window opening and closing device and while the invention is applicable to any swinging door, window, screen or similar hinged member, it is more particularly adapted for casement windows. Such windows are usually mounted in easements so as to swing outwardly from the outer Side thereof and such easements are frequently provided with a screen or storm window at the inner side thereof. Owing to the presence of the screen or storm window, it is quite inconvenient to reach the easement window to manually operate the same. For this reason it is most desirable to have some operating means for opening, closing and locking a window l which can be manipulated without disturbing the inner screen or window.` It is also quite common to equip such easement windows with spring hinges whereby they will automatically swing outwardly when partially opened.
It is an object of this invention, therefore, to provide a device by which the easement window may be pushed to partly open position so that the same can be swung open by its spring hinges and to provide a closing means for the window, both of which means can be operated without disturbing the inner window. ,l
Itis also an object of the invention to provide means for opening and closing a casement window which is disposed in and operated through the easement of said window.
It is still another object of the invention to provide such a device operating through the easement of the windowl comprising a locking means to hold the window in closed position. l
It is more specifically an object of th invention to provide an opening means for such a Casement window comprising a plunger member extending through 'and slidable 23, 1923. Serial No. 620,722.
through the easement and 'adapted to engage I the window together with a flexible'cord associated with said plunger for closing the window, which plunger is adapted to lock the window in position and which cord may also be provided with a take-up device.
These and other objects and advantages of the invention will be fully set forth in the following description made in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which like reference characters refer to the same parts throughout the different views, and in which,

Referring to the drawings, in Fig. 1 is shown la portion of a wall 1 in which the window easement having the vertical portions 2 and 3 is mounted. A window sash 4 carrying a glass 5 is hinged to the ywindow easement by hinges 6 preferably of the spring'hinge type, which sash 4 fits in the usual recesses formed in the members 2 and 3, as indicated vby dotted lines in Fig. 1. An inner sash 7 is fitted in recesses in the inner sides of the casement portions 2 and 3., which sash may carry a glass as shown, or a screen.
In accordance with the presentinvention,
4spaced sleeves 8` and 9 are mounted in the member 2 a't the inner and outer' sides thereof and a hollow plunger member 10 is ada ted to slide through-said sleeves and be gui ed thereby, which plunger member thus extends throu h and is slidable in the casement. Said unger member 1() has a handle 11 secured thereto at its inner end and is also provided adjacent said handle with oppositely disposed projecting ribs 12. In t e embodiment of the invention .illus trated, the plu er- .10 is of cylindrical shape and ts in cylindrical passages in the sleeves 8 and 9 and the sleeve 8 is further vprovided with opposi'tcly disposed passages 13 in which the ribs or projections 12 are adapted to slide. The sleeve 8 is provided at its outer end with a small projecting pin or stop 14 adjacent the upper passage 13, which pin is adapted to be contacted by one of they ribs 12 when said ribs are in position to alinewiththe passages 13. At its outer end, the plunger 10 has secured thereto spaced collars 15 and 16 between which is also rigidly Vsecured to the lunger a latch or locking member 17 of luntly pointed shape and which projects at one side of said plunger. j
The edge of the sash 4A opposite the hinged side thereof is provided wlth a recessv recei'ving a recessed plate 18. In the bottom of the recess in-said plate a slot 19 is formed, the outer side 2O of which extends at an angle to the vertical sfide of the sash 4 and this side is adapted to be contacted by the side of the latch 17 when the window is in closed position. The 'late 18 and the recess there- 1n also has a si e plate 21 forming a pocket 22 in said plate and a knot or other stop member 23 on the end ofa flexible cord 24 is adapted to be disposed in said recess.
The plate 21 is rovided with a vertical slot through which the cord 24 passes and a knot or stop member 23 is ada ted to be placed in said recess and plate y being inserted through a T-shaped slot 25 formed in the front portion 26 of the plate 18. The plate 18 is secured in the sash 4 by suitable screws, the heads of which are countersunk in said plate. The cord 24 passes through the plunger 10 and said plunger is provided at 1ts` inner end with an opening`27 through the bottom thereof through which said cord passes. A take-up device preferably is provided for the cord 24 and said cord 1s adapted to pass over a roove guiding and holding bracket or kno 28 secured to the front of the casin While any convenient form of take-up evice could beused, 'in the embodiment of the invention illustrated, the cord 24 passes through an opening 29 and around a narrow reel 30 mounted in a suitable casing 31 secured in the easement, which reel is preferably placed under tension to lwise direction through substantially ninety degrees and the projection 12 will contact the stop 14. The plunger `10 can now bev pushed outwardly sliding in sleeves 8 and 9 and the projections 1'21`sliding in openings 13. The end collar 16 on the plunger and the end of thg plunger will now contact with the plate 21 secured in the sash 4 and said sash will be pushed outwardly from the easement. After said sash has been partially opened it will be'free to swing out and will be swung outwardly by the hinged spring 6. The cord 24 will be carried out- Wardly as the window'swings open. If it be desired'to close the window, the cord 24 will be grasped above the guide member 28 and then pulled-inwardly. This will swing the window to substantially closed position and handle llvcan then be swung downwardly in a clockwise direction.` The latch member 17 will then contact the side 20 of opening 19 vand owing to the inclined angle of its side, the latch 17 will act to cam the window tightly to closed position and lock the same in such position. The spring druni 30 will wind up'the cord so that the device will then occupy substantially the position shown in Figs. 4, 5 and 9.
lathe-modification shown in Figs. 2 and 9, the take-up device for the cord is not used but the end of the -cord passes through the handle 34 and is provided ywith an ornamental tassel 35. The cord is shown in said figure with the window in open osition and the handle 34 turned downwardly.
From the above description it is seen that applicant has provided a simple and eiicient means for opening, closing and locking a window. The opening movement of the device is quite positive and the sash 4 can be pushed open no matter how tightly it is held 1n position. If' desired, the cord can be wrapped around the member 28 which will then form a cord holder and the window can thus be held in various positions. With the device, the louter window can be easily manipulated as required without ldisturbing the inner screen or storm window. The parts of the device are few, simple and easily made and the device is constructed to form an ornamental appearance at the inner side of the easement.
It will be understood that various changes may be made in the form, details, arrangement and priportions of the parts without departing m the scope `of applicants inl rectilinear plunger extending through and slidable in said opening in said easement and adapted to abut said window adjacent its free edge whereby said window can be pressed outwardly to partially open position by said plunger;

The structure set forth in claim l, a keeper'on said window, and said plunger having a locking device thereon adapted to be brought by a turning mowment of said plunger about its longitudinal axis4 into locking engagement with said keeper when the window is in closed position and to lock the window in such position.

The combination with 'a window hinged along one vertical side thereof and a casement for said Window, of a rectilinear plunger tting in and slidable through an open-l ing extending in a laterally inclined direction through the side of said easement with whichthe free edge of the window engages, lsaid plunger being adapted to abut against the inner side of the window adjacentits free edge and push the same to partially open position.
4. The structure set forth in claim 1, and a flexible cord passing through said plunger and attached to the window andadapted to be pulled to close the window, and adapted to hold the same in various positions.

The combination with a hinged window and the easement thereof, of a plunger extending through and slidable in said casementl and adapted to abut said window adjacent its free edge, a flexible cord passing through said plunger and attached to the window and adapted to be pulled to close .the window and adapted to hold the same in various positions, and means for takin-g up the oord at the inner end of said plunger. j
