1 Claim. (Cl. 292-275) This invention relates in general to window operators, and more specifically to window operators for opening and closing swinging windows.
The primary object of this invention is to provide an improved window operator wherein said window operator includes a rod which may be folded alongside said window in its closed position for locking same.
Another object of this invention is to provide an improved window operator having a gravity urged locking element for locking the window in an adjusted open position.
Another object of this invention is to provide an improved window operator which includes a first rod section pivotally secured to said window and a second rod section pivotally secured to said first rod section, the piv-- otal connection between the first and second rod sections being about a vertical axis whereby said second rod section can be folded with respect to the first rod section only when the window is in its closed position.
Another object of this invention is to provide an im proved window operator of simple construction whereby it may be economically manufactured.
Another object of this invention is to provide an improved window operator which has simple connecting means whereby it may be connected to a swinging window without the use of special tools.
A further object of this invention is to provide an improved window operator which may be mounted on the frame of a swinging window whereby said window may be opened by said operator even if said window opening is provided with a window screen.
With these objects definitely in view, this invention resides in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of elements and portions as will be hereinafter described in detail in the specification, particularly pointed out in the appended claim, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings which form a material part of this application, and in which:
Figure 1 is a transverse vertical sectional view through a building wall having a swinging window mounted therein, said swinging window being provided with the window operator which is the subject of this invention;
Figure 2 is an elevational view of the window portion of the building wall of Figure 1 as viewed from the right in Figure 1 and from the interior of the building, a portion of the operator being shown in its folded position by dotted lines;
Figure 3 is an enlarged side elevational view of the window operator of Figures 1 and 2 and showing the construction thereof, a window screen being illustrated in dotted lines;
Figure 4 is a top plan view of the window operator of Figure 3, the window screen being omitted;
Figure 5 is an enlarged partial longitudinal vertical sectional view taken substantially upon the plane indicated by the section line 5-5 of Figure 3 and showing the construction of the pivotal connection between rod sections of the window operator;
Figure 6 is a partial enlarged side elevational view of a portion of the window operator and showing the pivotal connection illustrated in Figure 5; and
Figure 7 is an enlarged fragmentary view of a portion of the window operator of Figures 3 and 4 and showing the arrangement between one of the rod sections of the window operator and a guide member adapted to be mounted on the frame of the swinging window, said guide member being shown in section in order to 2,702,205 Patented Feb. 15, 1955 clearly illustrate its relationship with the rod section of the window operator, a window screen being shown in dotted lines.
Similar characters of reference designate similar or identical elements and portions throughout the specification and throughout the different views of the drawmgs.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that there is illustrated in Figure 1 a building wall 10 having a window opening therein, the window opening being provided with a window frame 12 to which is pivotally mounted a swinging window 14. The window 14 includes a window sash 16 and a pane 18. The window 14 is hingedly connected to the window frame 12 by a plurality of hinges 20 secured to both the window frame 12 and the sash 16 of the window. Also mounted within the window frame 12 is a window screen 22 having a frame 24. The window opening in the wall 10 is provided with conventional trim 26 on the interior surface of the wall.
Referring now to Figures 3 through 7 in particular, it will be seen that the window operator, which is the subject of this invention, is referred to in general by the reference numeral 28. The window operator 28 includes a mounting bracket 30 pivotally secured to a first rod section 32 by a transverse pivot pin 34. The other end of the first rod section 32 is provided with a central extension 36 which fits between the forked end 38 of a second rod section 40. The central extension 36 is secured to the forked end 38 by a pivot pin 42 which is at right angles to the pivot pin 34.
Referring now to Figure 5 in particular, it will be seen that both the central projection 36 and the forked end 38 are provided with a rounded portion and a squared end whereby the second rod section 40 may be pivoted clockwise only, as viewed in Figures 5 and 6.
The other end of the second rod section 40 is provided with an operating handle 44 which is threadedly engaged thereon. Slidably mounted on the second rod section 40 is a guide member 46 having a substantially horizontal flange 48 and a vertical flange 50. Referring now to Figure 7 particularly, it will be seen that the vertical flange 50 is provided with an opening 52 through which the second rod section 40 passes. in order that the guide member 46 may be secured to a support, the horizontal flange 48 is provided with a pair of spaced fastener receiving apertures 54.
The guide member 46 is also provided with an L- shaped extension 56 having a horizontal flange in alignment with the horizontal flange 48 and a vertical flange in spaced parallel relation to the vertical flange 50. A locking element 58 in the form of a substantially rectangular plate has its lower end disposed between the vertical flanges 50 and 56. The locking element 58 is provided with a centrally located opening 60 therethrough of only a slightly greater diameter than the diameter of the second rod section 40. As is illustrated in Figure 7, the locking element tends to tilt to the right from the vertical flange 50 of the guide member 46 and the opening 60 tends to jam on the second rod section Any attempt of the second rod section 40 to move to the right, as viewed in Figure 7, merely tends to further urge movement of the locking element 58 away from the vertical flange 50 and further jam the opening 60 with respect to the second rod section 40.
Referring now to Figures 1 and 2 particularly, it will be seen that the mounting bracket 30 is secured to the sash 16 of the swinging window 14 by a plurality of fasteners passed through apertures 62 in the mounting bracket. The fasteners are referred to generally by the reference numeral 64. The guide member 46 is secured to the top of the sill portion of the window frame 12, by a plurality of fasteners passing through the openings 54 in the horizontal flange 48 of the guide member. The second rod section 40 passes through an opening 66 in the screen frame 24 with the handle 44 disposed interior of the wall 10. The opening 66 in the screen frame 24 is best illustrated in Figures 3 and 7. It is readily apparent that when the rod sections 32 and 40 are moved to the left by the handle 44, that the window 14 is swung to an open position and is retained in that position by the actiogoof the locking element 58 on the second rod section Referring now to Figure 2 in particular, when the window 14 is in its closed position, the second rod section 40 is moved to a position out of engagement with the guide member 46 and its locking element 58 with the first rod section 32 disposed within the openings 52 and 60. The second rod section 40 is then folded at right angles to the first rod section 32 to a position parallel to the lower portion of the screen frame 24. The window frame 12 is provided with a hook-shaped locking member in spaced relation to the guide member 46 and is adapted to receive the second rod section 40 for retaining said rod section in its hinged position. The hook-shaped locking member is referred to generally by the reference numeral 68. When the second rod section 40 is retained in its hinged position, as illustrated in dotted lines in Figure 2, it is obvious that the window 14 is locked against opening.
The operation of this operator will be understood from the foregoing description of the mechanical details thereof, taken in connection with the above recited objects and drawings. Further description would appear to be unnecessary.
Minor modification of the window operator, varying in minor details from the embodiment of the window operator illustrated and described here, may be resorted to without departure from the spirit and scope of this invention, as defined in the appended claim.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
In combination with a swinging window of the type including a window frame, a sash hingedly connected to an upper portion of said window frame, and a window screen closing said window frame, a window operator, said window operator including a mounting bracket se cured to a lower portion of said sash, a first rod section terminally pivotally connected to said mounting bracket, an enlarged bore through said window screen aligned with said mounting bracket when said sash is in a closed position, a latch carried by said window frame, said latch including a mounting flange secured to said window frame and extending beneath said window screen, a vertical guide flange carried by said mounting flange intermediate the ends thereof, said guide flange abutting an inner surface of said window screen and partially closing said bore, a rod section receiving opening in said guide flange directly communicating with said bore, a second rod section terminally pivotally connected to said first end section remote from said mounting bracket and normally forming an extension of said first rod section, said second rod section passing through said bore and said opening when said sash is in an open position, an upstanding lip on said mounting flange in closely adjacent spaced relation to said guide flange, a gravity actuated latch element having a lower end thereof seated in the space between said lip and said guide flange, an aperture in said latch element normally receiving said second rod section, said latch element and said guide flange cooperating to selectively retain either said first rod section or said second rod section in adjusted positions to retain and lock said window in selected positions, catch means carried by the inner surface of said window screen remote from said guide flange receiving and supporting said second rod section when in an inoperative position.
