To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that WILLIAM ROBERT THOMP- SON, citizen of the Dominion of New Zealand, residing at Tower Road, Matamata, in the Provincial District of Auckland, New Zealand, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Draft Preventers and Dust and Rain Excluders for Doors and lVindows, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices fitted to doors and windowsfor the purpose of preventing draft and the passage of dust and rain between said doors and windows and the surfaces above or on which they close.
The object of the invention is to provide for the aforesaid purpose, improved means, adapted to'be operated by the action of bringing the door or window to its closed position, so that the opening in some cases left between the door or window and the surface above which it closes, or the joint between such parts, will in all cases be effectively closed.
According to the invention a horizontal member is pivotally attached to the lower ends of two or more short rods, the upper ends of which are in turn pivotally connected to the door or window a short distance above the bottom thereof. A spring or springs acting on said rods, normally keep the horizontal member raised. above the bottom of the door or window and at the same time cause it to project at one end, beyond said door or window.
The action of closing the door or window brings the projecting end of the horizontal member in contact with a vertical member at a side of the door or window opening, with the result that said horizontal member is caused to swing downwards and make contact with the horizontal surface above or on which said door or window closes.
The horizontal member can consist of soft material such as rubber, felt or the like, gripped in a suitable holder, or it can consist of harder material faced along its lower edge with softer material as aforesaid in order to ensure effective closing of the opening or joint at the bottom of the door or window when same is fully closed.
The rods by means of which the horizontal member is hung or held are bent to facilitate the engagement therewith of the spring 91 springs which keep said horizontal menr ber raised when'the door or window is not closed.
The operating parts can in some cases be hidden and protected by a covering attached to the door or window, said covering at all times riding clear of the surface or surfaces over or above which the door or window moves, or the whole device can be recessed in the lower edge of the door or window.
In the accompanying drawing, the improved draft preventer and rain and dust excluder, is shown as fitted to a door, but it must be borne in mind the device can also be applied to windows.
Referring to the drawing in conjunction with which the invention will be further described Figure 1 is a part perspective view of a partly open door fitted with the improved device.
Figure 2 is a front View of the device removed from the door.
Figure 3 is a cross sectional view of same and showing portion of the door.
Figure 4 is a part longitudinal sectional elevation of the device, showing the horizontal member in its normal or raised position.
Figure 5 is a similar view to Figure 4, but showing the horizontal member forced down into contact with the surface above or on which the door closes.
Figure 6 is a part perspective view of the horizontal member, as constructed in the present instance.
Figures 7 and 8 are views similar to Figure 8, showing further methods of fitting the device to the door.
In the drawing 1 represents a covering which has a cross sectional shape as shown in Figure 3 and is attached to the door 2, so that its lower edge will always clear surfaces over which the door is moved.
The upper ends of bent rods 3 are pivotally mounted on horizontal pins at which can be attached either to the door 2 or cover 1, or be entered in both.
The lower ends of said rods 3 are pivotally connected to horizontal pins 5 held in vertical lugs 6 at the sides of openings 7 in the top of the holder 8 which is of inverted U shape in cross section.
The holder 8 is adapted to be pinched together as at 13 to grip a strip of felt, rubber, or other soft material 11, which projects below the holder, or said soft material can be otherwise gripped in or held to the holder 8 or the equivalent thereof.

underneath surface of the flat portion 8 of the cover '1 are arrangedto engage the bent,
rods 3 and exert pressure thereon in an upward direction, so as to normally keep the horizontal member, in this case consisting 1 projects beyond one side of'the door, as at Apad or plate 15 can be placed'on the stop 16 or other vertical member at the side of the door opening towards which the projecting end of the horizontal member hung on the door by the rods 3 is directed, said pad or plate 15 being in horizontal alignmentwith the projecting end 14 of the horizontal member. a
The lower edge ofthe door 2 can be recessed centrally as in Figure 7, or at one side as in Figure 8 to accommodate all of the working parts of the device. When the construction shown in Figure 7 is used,- the cover 1 is not required, while the pins 4 are driven into the door so as to pass through the top of the central recess 18 and the springs 12 are secured to the top 18 of said recess.
With a recess 19 in one side of the door 2, Figure 8, the springs 12 are secured to the top of the recess 19, a plain cover 20 being attached to the door while the pins 4 are secured in a manner similar to that shown in Figure 3.
On the door 2 being moved to its closed position the projecting end 1 o-fthe horizontal member hung by the rods 3' on the door, strikes the pad or plate 15 or the stop 16 or other vertical member at the side of the door opening with the-result thatsaid horizontal member owing to its manner of being hung by the rods 3 is forced downwards against the pressure of the springs 12, until when the door is fully closed, it is firmly in contact with or is forced harddown on to the surface 17 above or on which the bottom of the door closes, thereby eifec-V tively closing any opening left between said door and said surface 17, or sealing the joint made between the latter and the door.
Where the surface 17 is'smooth and true it is possible to use a horizontal member not faced along its lower edge with soft material, but the use of the latter is preferred as it ensures the complete closing of the space or joint at the bottom of the, door, in the event of the surface being slightly irregular when grit and dirt are deposited thereon. What I do claim and desire, to obtain by Letters Patent of the United States of America is z-- j 1. Means for the purposespecified for use with a swinging closure, comprising, a hori:
zontal member, pivoted rodsc'onnecting the member to a closure, holding means to nor mally hold the member raised to permit free swinging of the closure, the member having one end projecting beyond an edge of the closure, and a vertical member, at the side of the closure, swinging of the closure to closed.

resulting in forcing the horizontal member swinging of the closure, the member having one end projecting beyond an edge of the closure, and a vertical member at the side of the closure, swinging of the closure to closed position forcing the projecting end of the member against the vertical member, and resulting in forcing the horizontal member downwards, said horizontal member comprising, a holder having an inverted U shaped cross section, and lugs stamped out from the top of the holder, said pivoted rods being attached to the lugs, said vertical member being adjacent the attached edge of the closure, and said pivoted rods being of flat spring material and bent at a sharp angle whereby to form a resilient support so as to accommodate for any sagging of the closure,
