R. LEACH WEATHER STRIP Filed A r11124. 1924 nel of the door withportions bent upon themselves for holding a strip of material,

WEATHER-sierra Application filed April 24:, 1924. Serial No. 708,727.
To all whom it may COHGGTIL.
Beit known that I, Ronrnr LnAcrr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Albert Lea, in the county of Freeborn, State of Minnesota, have invented anew and useful Weather Strip; and I do "hereby :and has'for-its object to pro-videa weather stripcadapted for use on the bottom of a door comprising a bowedchanneled member having its outer flange secured to one side of the door, and its other flange disposed 1n a rabbet in'the opposite side of the door,
and movable therein when the-bowed portion of the channeled member is moved into or out of engagement with the door sill.
A further object isto provide the-flange of the rabbet which is disposedin the chanfor instance chamois, and which strip of material is positively held by the flange and engages the top of the door sill when the door is closed, thereby additionallypreventing air from passing under the door.
A further object is to provide the flange of the rabbet member, which is disposed in the channel of the door with vertically elongated apertures through which guide and limiting nails extend. Also to provide a plate secured to one side of the door and overlying the heads of the nails and provided with an inwardly extending flange which engages the flange of the channel member and the under side of the nail heads, thereby bracing the nails and forming a tight joint between the channel flange and the strip of material secured to the door.
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawing, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a view in elevation of the in ner side of one corner of a door and door frame, showing the weather strip applied thereto.
Figure 3 is a detail perspective view of a portion of the weather strip.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a conventional form of door frame, and 2 the sill thereof. :Hingedly mounted in the door frame'l on a hinge 3 is a (lOOP'i, which door is of a conventional construction. Disposed beneath the lower =endof the door at is'a channeled member 5,
which member is preferably formed from 1 spring or brass, which has a 'limited amount of flexibility, whereby "the bowed portion 6 thereof, when forced over the upperside of the door sill 2 willfrictionallyengage said door sill for-preventing the passage of air under the door. The channeled member has its flange 7 secured by-meansof screws 8-to the outer side ofthe'door h and its inner flange slidably mounted'in a'horizontally'disposed rabbet '9, in the inner side of thedoor, said inner flange being designated by the numeral '10,a-nd preferably engages the innerwall-of the rabbet-9 during its sliding movement for excluding the passage of air underthe door.
The inner wall of thechannelmember 5 is bent upon itself at 11, and also at 12 whereby flanges and 13 are formed in parallel relation to one another, and between which flanges, 10 and 18, a pliable flexible strip of material 14: is securely clamped and held without danger of strip of material working loose incident to constant opening and closing of the door, at which time said strip of material let frictionally drags over the top of the. sill 2 as clearly shown in Figure 2, for preventing passage of air under the door, that is any air which may pass under the channel 5, incident to any irregularities in the upper face of the door sill i. The flanges 10 and 13 are provided with vertically disposed registering apertures 15, through which nails 16 pass. The nails 16 cooperate with the ends of the apertures for limiting the upward and downward movement of the inner side of the channel 5, therefore it will be seen that danger of the inner side of the channel being bent down for any reason is obviated, and the upward movement of the inner side of the channel limited whereby the bowed portion 6 of the channel member, when in engagement with the upper side of the sill, will be bowed or straightened out sufficiently to insure a close frictional engagement of the channel with the upper side of the sill. Secured to the inner side of the door 4 by means of screws 17 is a strip 18, which strip forms the outer side of the rabbet 9, and has its lower edge provided with a horizontally disposed flange 19 which engages the outer portion 13 of the channeled member and guides said portion during the flexing action of the channeled member. Flange 19 also engages the under side of the outer ends of the nails 16, and prevents downward bending of the same.
From the above it will be seen that a door weather strip is provided, which strip is simple in construction, may be easily and quickly applied to a door, and one wherein the entire channel 5 is formed from a single strip of material, and the securing means comprising flanges 10 and 13 for holding the strip of flexible material 14, for instance chamois is formed from a single piece of material, bent to form. It will also be seen that the plate 18 not only forms the guide rab bet 9, but is also provided with a guide flange 19 which engages the outer side of the outer flange 18 and braces said flange in its movement.
The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is 1. The combination with the lower end of a door, said door being disposed over a door sill, of a weather strip, said strip comprising a channeled member, one flange of said channeled member being secured to one side of the door, the other flange of said channeled member being disposed in a rabbet in the other side of the door, the transverse portion of said channeled member being downwardly bowed, horizontally disposed nails extending through vertically elongated apertures in the flange disposed in the rabbet of the door, a pliable member carried by said last named flange and adapted to engage the door sill, a plate secured to said door and forming with said rabbet a channel in the door, and a flange carried by said plate and engaging the outer side of the flange disposed in -the channel of the door and underlying the outer ends of the nails.
2. The combination with the lower end of a door, said door being disposed over a door sill, a flexible channeled member in which said lower end of the door is disposed, one flange of the channeled member being secured to one side of the door, the other flange of said channeled member being disposed in a ra blbet on the other side of the door and movable therein, securing nails extending through vertically elongated slots in the last mentioned flange, and a pliable member carried by said last named flange and cooperating with the door sill, of means for bracing said nails, said means comprising a plate secured to the door and forming with said rabbet a channel in the door and a flange carried by said plate and engaging the outer side of the channel flange and the under sides of the nails.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ROBERT LEACH.
