DOOR STRIP. APPLICATION FILED FEB. 27, I919.
Patented Jan. 24, 1922.
ANGELL C. GROSS, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
DOOR STRIP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
latented Jan. 24, 1922.
Application filed February 27, 1919. Serial No. 279,494.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANGELL C. (Jhmss a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Door Strips, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in door strips, and has for its object to provide a simple and effect ve device of this character which may be readily applied to sliding doors so that as a door is opened and closed the door strip \Vlil rise and fall relative to the door sill and when in its lowered position will closethe space between the bottom edge of the door and the door sill.
lVith this end in view, this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claims.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains, may understand how to make and use the same. I will describe its construction in detail. referring by-numerals to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application. in which Fig. 1, is a side elevation of a door showing my improvement applied thereto.
Fig. 2, is a section at the line 2-2 of F ig. 1.
Fig. 3, is an end view of the lift block for elevating the door strip.
In carrying out my invention as here enil odied,15 represents a sliding door such as is used in street cars, elevated cars or in buildings, to the lower edge of which is at tached the weather strip 16 having oblique or diagonal slots 17 thereinwhich register with stationary cam blocks 18 constructed and positioned to fit said slots so that when said weather strip moves longitudinally in one direction or the other it will be simul taneously raised or lowered.
In order to give an oblique vertical movement to the weather strip, I provide a lift block 20 which is secured to the door sill in such a position that when the door is completely closed the weather strip will have passed beyond this block leaving said weather strip free to be forced downward by the member 21 contacting with the door frame 19.
W hen the door is slid open, the first movement thereof will carry the weather strip into contact with the lift block and during the further sliding movement of the door the weather strip will ride upward upm an inclined or beveled end 23 of the lift block and over said block as shown in Fig. 1 and be there held until the door is again closed as will be readily understood.
The lift block 20 has a groove 22 formed. therein, here shown as being wider at the bottom than at the top to facilitate the passage of the strip of felt 13, which latter is attached to and forms a partof the weather strip, through said groove while the lower edge of the weather strip is rid ing upon the upper surface of the lift block. The outer face of the weather strip is preferably covered or housed by a blade or strip 24 which is attached to the door in any suitable manner.
From the foregoing description it will be noted that as the door is moved to one side for opening the same one end of the weather strip will contact with one of the inclined or beveled ends 23 of the lift block causing said weather strip to be raised in an oblique vertical line and when the lower edge of said weather strip reaches the top of the lift block it will rest thereon and slide thereoverduring any further movement of the door retaining the weather strip in a raised position and assaid weather strip passes over said block the strip of felt will pass through the groove 22 in said block. During the closing movement of the door the weather strip will be carried beyond the lift block and caused to contact with the door frame thus forcing said weather strip clownward through the medium of the cam blocks 1811 until the felt snugly engages the door s1 Of-coursdl do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction as herein shown as these may be varied within the limits of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and useful is:- 1. The combination with a door and a weather strip mounted thereon for oblique vertical movement of a lift block over which the weather strip is adapted to slide with a portion thereof in direct contact with the lock, said block having a slot therethrough with which registers another portion of said weather strip, the engagement of said block and weather strip causing the latter to be I raised as the door is opened. 1
2.] The COII1.b1l121 t1OIl with a door and a I weather strip mounted thereon for oblique vertical movement, of a lift block over which the weather strip is adapted to slide with a portion thereof in direct contact with the block, said block having a slot therethrough with which registers another portion of said weather strip, said slot being wider at the bottom than at the top, the engagement of said blockand said weather strip canszng the latter to be raised as the door is opened. 3. In combination with a door, a weather strip having cam slots therein, earn block secured to the doorand reg stering with San slots whereby said weather strip will be
