ROY R. BARNARD, OF LONG BEACH, CALIFORNIA.
SASH FASTENER.
Application filed January 12, 1927. Serial No. 160,688.
This invention relates to sass iasteners and has ior an object the provision of a device which will combine with its fastening featur s, the features oi a window `wedge or anti-radier and thus serve a twoifold purpose, iii-sin that olf Yhistening the window in a de sired position, and, second, to prevent ob]ec tionabie rattiin noises in windy weather.
To this end the invention provides a novel 'form o'l`V ilastening and anti-rattling device arranged to be carried by one of the sash of a window and to engage a keeper element sen cured to the other sash, the construction oi the keeper element enabling the sash to be fastened in any desired position.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention further includes the :following novel features and details ot construction, to be hereinafter more fuily described, illus* trai-ed in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claiin.
in the drawings Figure 1 is a fragmentary elevation showing a portion of a window with the invention applied.
Figure 2 is an enlarged :fragmentary view of the adjacent portions oi? the upper and lower sash with parts shown in section.
Figure 3 is an enlarged :fragmentary section taken substantially on theline 3-3 of Figure 1.
Fig'lilre 4 is a detail perspective view of the fastener' housing.
Referring to the drawings in detail wherein like cliaracters ot reference denote con responding parts, the reference character indicates a portion ot a window traine in which is slidingly mounted an upper sash 1() and a lower sash 1 1`r all of which may be ot the usual or any pre'irrred construction.
Secured to the upper sash by means of. screws or similar fastening devices 12, is a metal strip 13, the latter being provided with spaced openings 14. This strip of any desired width and lengtha but preferably er;n tends throughout the length of the sash to which it is attached.
Secured to the lower sash 11 is an angle plate 15 which is provided at its upper end with an extension 16. This extension is adapted to overlie the strip 10 and is provided with an opening 17 in which is secured a cup-shaped housing 1.8. The housing may be secured by any suitable means, such as by forming an annular groove 18 in the open end oi the housing to engage over the edge of the opening 17, as is clearly shown in Figures 3 and 1- o'f the drawings. The housing 18 has its open end disposed toward the strip 13 and its outer end is provided with an opening` 19. Extending through the housing 18 is a pin 2() whose inner end is adapted to engage in any one of the openings 141-. The pin `2() is provided with a collar 21 and surrounding the pin between this collar and the end of the housing 18 is a coiled spring 22. This spring acts to yieldingly torce the pin inward so as to engage within the openings 14. The outer end oit the pin 20 is provided with a head or knob 23, by means of which it may be withdrawn from the openings and in order to hold the pin in withdrawn position, the knob has extending therefrom one or more lugs 24. These lugs are adapted for passage through extensions upon opposite sides of the opening 19 and when the lugs are Withdrawn from these extensions they may be positioned against the end ol' the housing so as to pre vent inward movement o:[:` the pin.
It desired, the upper sash may be provided with a channel 26 which extends longitudinally beneath the strip 13.
The invention is susceptible oi various changes in its iorin, proportions and minor details oil construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention what is claimed is z- In combination with upper and lower relatively slidable sash, a strip adapted to be secured to one ot the sash and having longitudinally spaced openings therein, a plate secured to the other sash and having an extremity bent over the top of the sash and then upwardly to overlie the strip, said extremity having an opening therein, a cup-shaped housing having its open end surrounded. by an annular groove to receive the walls of said opening secured andY disposed toward the strip and having an opening in its outer end,
a shouldered pin extending through the h0using and having tsinner end adapted to engage Within the openings of the strip, a
i spring surrounding the pin between the shoulder thereo'fztndthe end of the easing ROY R. BARNARD.
