Description
to increase the efficiency in 'terior of the frame 'Fic'. 8 is a view looking in the direction JOHN F. BRODOWSKI, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCOlSl T.`
SASH-FASTENERI Application led February 91920. Serial No.
To all whom 'it may concern:
e it known that I, JOHN F.v BnoDowsKI, a citizen of the United States, and resident 0f il'waukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented cer'- ltain new and useful Improvements in' Sashdeclare that the f, F clear, and exact descr1p- Fasteners; and I do hereby following is a full, tion thereof.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in means for holding storm or screen sashes, or other movable members in desired positions with respect to a window frame or other support, the present structure being more particularly of that type wherein the device employed for holding the sash or other member spaced outwardly from its'support,.and is also adapted to lock lrhe member against its support.
It is in general the object of my invention to simplify and otherwise improve the structure of devices of this character, and thereof particu larly with respect to providing a positive means forl preventing possible disengagement of the holding device from its position locking the sash or other member against its support.
It is more particularly my object to pro'- vide a device of this character wherein the holding member of the device may be formed `0f a Sin le length of. rod having one end bent to orm an attaching eye which serves to procure the locking action of the holding member.
With the above and other objects and ad-y vantages view, which will be apparent als. the description proceeds, my invention re sides in the novell features of cons ruction, combination and arrangement of the parts as hereinafter described and defined by the appended claims. y
In the accompanying drawings:
igure 1 is an elevational view looking toward the inner sides of the sections of a pair of sash and frame rails, showing my improved device associated therewith and locking the sash against the frame rail.- Fig 2 is a similar view looking from the and sash.
of Fig. 1, but showing the sash rail held in :outwardly moved position, it being assumed that-'the sash rail is of the normal swinging Specification of Letters Patent.
rail 1n closed positiony Patented May 31., 1921., 357,446.
type pivotally attached at the top of the window frame. l
ig. 4 is a transverse sectional view through the frame and sash structure looking downwardly on the device as arranged 1n Figs. l and 2. f
ig. 5 -is a detail view of the keeper plate. eferrlng now more particularly tothe accompanying drawings, 5 designates one of the vertical rails of a window frame or sash support and 6 designates the corresponding rail of a swinging sash or other member movable toward and ing the usual sliding sash guides 7 secured thereto, which, for the purpose of this invention are treated as a part of the frame rail. The outer guide 7 carries thekeeper member 8 of my device, which comprises a plate having one side portion bent laterally and secured to the guide 7, said plate extending inwardly in a plane parallel to the sash member when closed. An attaching plate 9 has one side bent laterally and said plate extending inwardly therefrom to lie in a plane at' right angles to the plane of the keeper plate when the sash is closed `and entering an open slot 10 formed inthe keeper plate, the attaching plate beingof such width as to extend inwardly of the inner edge of the keeper plate and being provided with a longitudinal slot l1, which projectsinwardly past said edge of the keeper plate, thus defining a slide portion ,i 12. The holding member of my device com` yprises a single length of preferably cylindrical rod material 13, which has one'end bent and .extending through the slot ll and providing an attaching eye I4 and slidable on the sliding portion l2 of the plate.
The free portions of theholding rod are i provided with holding recesses which may be-formed in any suitable manner, preferablyby bowing` the rod as at 15,'these recasses opening downwardly and adapted to receive ,and seat against the lower portion of the keeper plate 8y when the rod is inserted in the slot 10 of said keeper plate to thus hold the sash member in outward position as shown in Fig. 3.
lVhen it is desired to lock the sash member in closed position, the sash member is swung to suchI position with the securing eye of the holding rod disposed at the inner end of the sliding port-ion @and hence movable past the keeper plate. The securing eye li then forced loutwardly on the slide member, bearing against the inner face ot the keeper plate, thus aftort'lingapositive lock to hold the sashin closed position. The eye moves into recessed portions 16 of the' side ot the slotl 10 by reason otl the natural resilience ot' the various parts ot the device, thus yieldably holding the eye 14 against detaclnnent from lthe keeper plate by inward movement whereby accidental disengagement to releasel the locking corr nection is positively prevented. lt is also noted, that when the recessed portion 15 ot" the holding rod is engaged in the slot in the keeper plate, said portion will drop into the lower recess 16 and be thus held against accidental detachment permitting the sash to close. The other pointV to be noted is that when the eye member 14- is engaged against the keeper plate in locking position. any outward stress on the, sash member will be exerted against the portion ot' the eye which is located between the sides of the slot l0 whereby a positive, holding is etiected against such outward stress, which -an not be relieved to permit outward movement of the sash member without-deliberate manipulation of the holding rod from its locking position.
1While I have shown and vdescribed an eX- ceedingly simple, ,strong and durable device which will effectively hold and lock a swinging sash or other member in desired positions with respect to its support, the holding member ot' the device constituting a single bent rod, and while the slide portion l2 of the sash :'lttaching member is formed by providing a slotted attaching plate, said slide portion may constitute any membermovable through the slot of the keeper member to ati'ord` slidable pivotal connection for the. holding member.
Yi'hilel I have, shown and described a preferred emlmdimeir'iot' my invention, it will -be appreciated that various changes and modifications of lstructure may be employed to meet differing conditions ot' use and manufacture, without departing in any manner from the spirit otl my invention.
lVhat is claimed is:
l. A' device ot the class describedv comprising the combination with a pair of relatively main rmovable. parts7 of a keeper member secured to one ot' said parts and provided with a slot, an attachment member secured to the other nart and provided with a slide portion movable through the slot of the keeper member, and a'holding member having one portion pivotally and slidably mounted on said slide member and provided. with a. recess adapted to receive a portion ot the keeper member to hold the main parts spaced, the end portion of the holding member being engageable against the keeper member when the slide member is inserted through theI slot of the -keeper member, to hold said main parts together.
A 'device of the class described comprising the combination with a pair ot' relatively main movable parts, of a keeper member secured to one of said parts and provided with a slot, an attachment member secured to the other part and provided with a slide portion movable through the slot ot' the keeper member, and a holding member comprising rod having one end portion bent to form an eye loosely embracing the slide portion and provided with a recess adapted to@ receive a portion ot the keeper member. said eye port-ion heilig engageable against the keeper member when the slide portion ot' the attaching member is inserted through the slot ot' the keeper member.
8. .Mdevice of the class described comprising thc combination with a pair ot' relatively maiu movable parts. of a keeper membcr secured to one otl said parts and provided with a slot, an attachment member secured to the other partl and provided with a slide portion movable through the slot of the keeper member, and a holding member slidabtxv mounted on said slide portion and engageable against -the keeper member to hold the parts together. the sides ot' thel slot ot' the keeper member being provided with recesses adapted to yieldably seat the holding member when the slide member is passed through the slotof the keeper member.
4. device of the class described comprising a pair of relatively movable main parts. a keeper plate secured to and extending laterally yfrom one ot' said parts and provided with an open slot therein, an attaching plate secured to the other part, said plate having a. portion movable into the slot ot' the keeper plate and being provided with a slot extending past the free end of the keeper plate, a holding member having an eye portion embracing the portion of the attaching plate outwardly of its slot and slidably thereon, said. eye member being movable to engage the kee er plate when the attaching plate is move' into the slot of the keeper plate.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing l have hereunto'set my hand at Milwaukee in the county o'f h'ililwaukee and State ot' 'iscousin.
