a. citizen of the United States, residing at.
Yuma, in the countyrot' Yuma andStatefof Arizona, have invented new and useful linrovements in Door Fasteners oi which the tollowingis a specitication.
This invention relates to fastening devices and more particularly to automobile door fasteners.
it is an object of the present invention to provide an extremely simple, substantial and effective means for latching automobile doors in closed position and to provide for the ready releasing of the latch. Another object of the invention is to provide a locking device having but a single operating element for latching and lor releasing the door, and another object is to provide a locking device operative to prevent rattling of the door.
@ther ob'ects and advantages will be made manii'est in the following speciiication of an embodiment of the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings,
wherein- Figure 1 is a perspective of a portion of a body oit/an automible sho-wing the door in open position to illustrate the latching element.
Fig. 2 is a perspective of the detached yieldable latch. y
Fig. 3 is a :tace elevation of a portion o' the door style in which the latch keeper is countersunk.
Fig. 4 is a section on line 4-4 of Fig. 3'.y
Fig. 5 is a sectional view showing the parts in coacting position ras engaged during the closing of the door.
Fig. 6 is a vertical section showing the position of latching parts after the door is closed.
Fig. 7 is a perspective of the mortised door style with the latch plate removed and showing the latch in perspective.
Fig. 8 vis a perspective of the latch keeper secured on the body frame.
The present invention consists of a substantially straight push rod or stem 2, the upper end of which is provided with a button 3 for access in the upper edge of a door D. for instance an automobile door. The latch 2 is slidably mounted in a bore 4 in the door structure, the upper of the door being enlarged at 5 to receive the button 3. Below the lower end of the latch stem is arranged an enpansi'le normally thrusting the latch to uppermost position V'and' serving to move a block-like; art 8 vinto engagement with a shoulder formediira` mortiseor pocket in, the doorstructure and in which."A
the' 'blockv 8i is vvertically sflid'able and is tary' action." The mortised latclr bflocki's' substantially covered by a simple section ot' casing 10 which is provided in its face with an aperture 11. On one side of the latch block 8 and exposed in the aperture 11 of the casing is a locking nib or hook 12 curved upwardly and inwardly from the face of the block. f
Secured to the edge of a style 14 of the body frame of the vehicle is a countersunk keeper plate 15 which may be fastened as by screws 16, and angularly projecting from the rear of this plate is a Hangs 17. Projecting forwardly from this flange is a stout downwardly projecting hook 18, the lower outer corner of which is curved or beveled downwardly and rearwardly at 18a, and this is adapted to be engaged by the curved front face of the latch nib or hook 12 when the door D is swung closed. The latch stem with the block will yield downwardly as the `latch nib 12 engages the keeper hook 1S and will snap up into interlocking position with the hook 18 thus fastening the door in closed position.
In alinement with and below the keeper hook 18 is a lug 19 rigid with the `flange 17 of the keeper plate and this lug 19 is adapted to swing in under an inwardly projecting shoulder 2O provided on the facev of the latch casing 10, as clearly shown in Fig. 3; the lug 19 being engaged by the lower corner of the shoulder 20 and the lower edge of the aperture 11 and, theretore, holding the d-ioor Iagainst material vertical play or vibration.
To open the door it is only necessary to press down the push button 3 which will force the latch down against its spring T after which thedoor may be swung open and the latch end released to resume its normal position.
Further embodiments, modifications and variations may be resorted to within the spirit of the invention as here claimed.
What is claimed is:
1. In a closure Y:fastening device, a stem having intermediate its length a block for preventing rotation of the stein in its mounting, said block having a latching part, and a keeper including a plate attaehable to a supporting element, the keeper having a hook parallel to said plate end engageable by the said part.
2. In a closure fastening device, a stern having intermediate its length'a block preventing rotation of the stem in its mounting, Said block having a latehing part, a keeper including a plate attachable to a supporting element, the keeper having a hook parallel to said plate and engageable by the said part, a'easing section covering the latching block and having an aperture to receive the keeper hook, said easing section having a shoulder at one side of the aperture, and
a lug combined with the keeper plate to enter said aperture between said shoulder and a contiguous edge of the aperture and Whereby play of the closure When latohed is obviated.
3. InY a closure fastening device, a stemYYY having a button at its upper end and having MARION A. ANDREWS.
