SASH FASTENER.
This invention relatesto window fasteners of the type employing cam actuated clamping members, and has for its ob ect the provision of an improved fastener of this char- .acter which is capable of locking the upper sash and at the same time preventing a raising of the lower sash above a predetermined extent, and is also capable of locking the lower sash in any desired raised position.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following detailed description thereof.
WVhile the invention in its broader aspect is capable of embodiment in numerous forms, a preferred embodiment is illustratedin the accompanying drawings, in which,

Fig.2 is a similar View with the lower sash partly raised andwith the securing means released from the upper sash and in locking engagement with the lower sash. Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5-5 in Fig. 4, and Fig. 6 is an inner side elevation of the cam member.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a window casing, and 2 and 3 the upper and lower sash, respectively, therein.
The fastener comprising the invention, in its present embodiment, includes a mounting plate 4 that is secured by screws or 1n some other suitable manner to the window casing at the inner side of the runway of the lower sash 8, such plate, in the present instance, being shown as securedto the inner guide strip 5 for the lower sash at a point a short distance above the upper end of the lower sash. An arm 6 is pivoted to the plate 4 for swinging movements and is of suitable length to adapt it to be swung across the runway of the lower sash 3 with one end adjacent to the inner side of the upper sash 2, and also to be swung into vertical position at the inner side of the runway of the sash 3. This arm is adapted to have a quarter swinging movement, being stopped at both ends of the quarter by engagement with a lip or stop lug 7 on the plate 4.
A cam lever 8 is pivotally carried. by the outer or free end of the arm 6 by a pivot pin 9 and is provided at the inner side thereof with a cam or eccentric portion 10, and at the outer side of the portion 10 with another cam portion 11, the cam surfacesof both of said portions being struck around the turned in one direction acts to retract the clamping member 12 from window clamping position and when turned in the other direct1on imparts an initial clamping movement to said member, or, in other Words, moves it to a point in close relation to the sash which itis intended to clamp. The cam portion 11 of the. lever is so formed'that when the cam portion 10 has moved the clamping member to initial clamping position, the cam portion 11 will then begin to act against the rear side of the clamping foot 13 to force it into clamping engagement with the sash. For this reason, the opening 15 of the clamping member is made slightly oblong, so that sufiicient play is permitted between the clamping member and cam portion 10 to permit the clamping movement of the member that is imparted to it by the action of the cam portion 11, which movement is relative to the cam portion 10.
It is apparent that when the arm 6 is in its crosswise position with respect to the sash, as shown in Fig. 1, it stands in the path of raising movement of the lower sash I} so as to limit such raising movement, and its clamping member 12 is adapted to be placed in clamping engagement with the upper sash 2. The upper sash is, therefore, clamped firmly against any opening movement and the lower sash is prevented from being opened a greater extent than is per-.
mitted by its engagement with the arm 6.
If it is desired to lock the lower sash in any desired raised position, the arm 6 is swung into longitudinal position with respect to the sash runway, so that the clamping means is disposed entirely without the runway of the lower sash. When in this osition, the clamping member may be fbrced into clamping engagement with the lower sash, as shown in Fig. 2;
It is evident that I have provided a simple and eflicient window fastening means which may be utilized to secure either sash in different positions and which also, when in securing engagement with the upper sash, serves as a means for preventing a raising of the lower sash beyond a predetermined eX- tent. It is also evident that the provision of the two cam surfaces on the lever is of importance in that the one which imparts the retracting movement and also the initial clamping movement to the clamping member acts on the flange or body portion 14 of the clamping member, so that a direct sliding action is imparted thereto, while the cam portion 11 imparts the final clamping pressure to the foot 18 in direct opposition to the sash and centrally of the foot flange instead of at one side edge thereof, as would be the case if the entire clamping action were imparted thereto by the action of the cam 10. The cam portion 11 being larger than the portion 10 also imparts a greater leverage on the clamping member than would the portion 10.
I wish it understood that my invention is not limited to any specific construction, arrangement or form of the parts, as it is capable of numerous modifications and changes without departing from the spirit of the claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a window fastener, a swinging arm and a clamping means carried by the arm and adapted to be swung into securing relation to either the upper or lower sash of an associated window by a swinging of the arm.
2. A window fastener having a mounting plate for attachment to a window casing, an arm pivoted to the plate, a clamping means carried by the arm and movable into various clamping positions by a swinging of the arm.
3. A window fastener comprising an arm adapted to be pivoted for swinging movements to a window casing, a clamping member and a cam lever carried by the arm, the latter being operable to impart clamping neaaaee per sash or the lower sash against movements.
5. The combination with a window casing and the sliding upper and lower sash therein, of an arm pivoted to the casing, sash clamping n' eans carried by the arm and adapted to be swung with the arm into clamping relation with the lower sash or into clamping relation with the upper sash and when in the latter position serving to limit the raising movements of the lower sash.
G. In a window fastener, a clamping memher having a clamping foot and a rearwardly extending flange, the latter having an oblong opening therein, a pivoted cam lever having a cam portion working in said opening to impart retracting movements and initial clamping movements to the clamping member when the lever is moved in different directions and having another cam portion for acting on the clamping member to impart final clamping movements thereto, and an arm carrying and adapted to be moved to place said member and lever in different operative positions.
7. In a window fastener a clamping member having a clamping foot and a flange extending rearwardly therefrom, said flange having an elongated opening therein, a pivoted cam lever having a cam portion disposed within said opening to impart retract ing and initial clamping movements to the memberwhen the lever is moved in different directions, said lever having another cam portion of greater size which acts directly on the foot portion of the clamping mem her to impart final clamping movements thereto independently of the first-mentioned cam portion, and means movably carrying said member and lever to place them in various operative positions.
